2022 Best Movies (some on watchlist, some I've seen)
really fantastic year, again I recommend digging for this stuff as the surface level shit was mainly boring but even then some blockbusters showed they can hold their own too when it's done right. A particular good year for horror. A lot to keep an eye for. No particular order yet besides the ones I've seen I reviewed and rated. The Northman might be a guilty pleasure which is explained down below. Fantastic director, I just wasn't feeling it this time around. Hellhole too which I like more even though the Northman might be better technically. It's just personal preference

- DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsColin FarrellBrendan GleesonKerry CondonTwo lifelong friends find themselves at an impasse when one abruptly ends their relationship, with alarming consequences for both of them.10/10, a strong movie about broken friendships, boundaries, being remembered and being remembered nice. An hysterical dark comedy that has this years best cinematography, best atmosphere, best acting, best directing and in general a movie skilled in artful decisions that make a gut-wrenching film. A lot of set ups and stuff led to interpretation too. Will see again as soon as I can
- DirectorMaryna Er GorbachStarsOksana CherkashynaSergey ShadrinOleg ShcherbinaAfter flight MH17 crashes in eastern Ukraine, violent tensions disrupt the lives of an expecting couple living in Donetsk.low10-high9/10
- DirectorJoanna HoggStarsTilda SwintonLouisAugust JoshiReturning to a hotel now haunted by its mysterious past, an artist and her elderly mother confront long-buried secrets in their former family home.low10-high9/10, sleeper hit of the year, this movie FUCKS. This makes me glad to see what else this director does as she has an eye for cinema in a way that others don't.. An example would be in the way she films this: intimacy with a mix of horror. I kind of never seen that intense sense of certain unease before. I also loved how thick the atmosphere was and how it felt like the camera was fogged in this ethereal doom. Tilda Swinton my favorite actress of course does the best job possible playing two characters at once that feels so different and distinct from each other. It's unhuman how she does it. Top of their craft. Same with the direction and writing to the writing and blocking. Everything besides one nitpick is all I could want ever want in a film most of the time so just see it.
- DirectorsDaniel KwanDaniel ScheinertStarsMichelle YeohStephanie HsuJamie Lee CurtisA middle-aged Chinese immigrant is swept up into an insane adventure in which she alone can save existence by exploring other universes and connecting with the lives she could have led.high9/10, Swiss Army Mans and Death of Dick Long's directors make their magnum opus and possibly the best movie of the year. As the title say's it really has everything. A really great comedy drama reminiscent of the matrix. Very funny and sweet. Racoons singing Randy Newman will never look the same again.
- DirectorAndrew CallaghanStarsAndrew CallaghanJoker GangGum GangFollows events and characters surrounding the January 6th, 2021 insurrection of the U.S. Capital Building in the days preceding the attack.9/10, Andrew always delivers on quality journalism and showing both sides. He's a visual and auditory story teller as well juxtaposing serious issues with funny people who take them truly to heart. Some are very genuine and some are not. This is probably the best documentary this year and will only hold up with time. I didn't really know how he was going to show everything and put it together but as always, he never disappoints. YMS THIS A 9 STFU
EDIT: HE A CREEP NOOOOOO, HE GETS WORSE WITH TIME NOOOOOOO I DONT KNOW HOW TO RATE THIS AND HIS CONTENT NOOOOOO - DirectorRuben ÖstlundStarsThobias ThorwidHarris DickinsonCharlbi DeanA fashion model celebrity couple join an eventful cruise for the super-rich.low9/10, Ruben really knows how to make awkward = funny. What would usually be met with people hiding their faces is instead met with uproarious laughter. It jokes and talks about the wealthy and poor and flips it on its head without it being pandering too. In general a great critique of high society, gender roles, influencers. Just a hell of a boat ride into the cesspool that's our society. The set piece itself is incredible and adds to the tension and unease as the camera and people tilt back and forth trying to stay up and not puke on it. Nice cinematography, they used unique techniques to make each shot impactful and rememberable. The acting was subtle genius to outwardly explosive. Sad that Charlbi Dean died so suddenly because she did a hell of a job. Usually people expect BIG performances and yet some of the best also come from the quiet lade back approach of life and she met that with extreme professionalism. If you wanted subtle then this girl is it. And while most of the acting is subtle, the directing is not (not a bad thing).
anyway this is a very fun and very funny movie. not in the traditional sense but despite that very riveting. - DirectorPark Chan-wookStarsTang WeiPark Hae-ilLee Jung-hyunA detective investigating a man's death in the mountains meets the dead man's mysterious wife in the course of his dogged sleuthing.low9/10, the talented director of Oldboy, the Handmaiden, thirst and the vengeance series of movies comes his next piece of art, showcasing his versatility and talent in directing he come to be known for. This director understands symbols and emotions so well he's hard not to call one of the best in filmmaking right now. Knows when to do closeups, knows his depth of field and blocking. Knows how fucking relationships should work with these types of movies. Maybe a few nitpicks here have to deal with sound and some unnecessary moments but anyway it keeps your attention in this fucked up romance for a majority of the film. I've realized a lot of his films boil down to that but there's always so much more like his small details and creativity with the camera to his big ones and composition.
- DirectorCharlotte WellsStarsPaul MescalFrankie CorioCelia Rowlson-HallSophie reflects on the shared joy and private melancholy of a holiday she took with her father twenty years earlier. Memories real and imagined fill the gaps between as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn't.low9/10, needs a double-watch to truly understand what's happening. Not like you need that to be interested or even know what's happening as it's well shot, finely acted, well-paced; but the plot has this story telling element that you need to focus on to know the dynamics of the two characters. It's haunting, poetic, and insanely smart. This director is special and should be looked out for. A VHS mastapiece
- DirectorTodd FieldStarsCate BlanchettNoémie MerlantNina HossSet in the international world of Western classical music, the film centers on Lydia Tár, widely considered one of the greatest living composer-conductors and the very first female director of a major German orchestra.high8-low9/10, see this movie before judging it from twitter. It makes more sense in context although I will admit it's my least favorite scene. This film in my opinion gets a lot more right than wrong though. Besides that hiccup there's a lot of passion from Blanchet and the filmmaking, especially music and sound. I really suggest listening with a good system or with earbuds cause some of it can be missed and is subtle much like the music. The characters feel real and not like "robots" even though one character is supposed to be one. The directing and editing flowed nicely and if I was versed in music I'd probably catch a lot more small details. As the character say's she's talking through the music and one great thing is they didn't translate foreign languages and you have to use context clues to get what she's saying (unless I have a bad copy lol in that case ignore me saying stuff that isn't there). The writing is witty and well researched. A phenomenal character study to add to that. Again don't judge entirely until you've seen the movie. You get this perspective from the character not the filmmaker
- DirectorKristoffer BorgliStarsKristine Kujath ThorpEirik SætherFanny VaagerIncreasingly overshadowed by her boyfriend's recent rise to fame as a sculptor of stolen furniture, Signe hatches a vicious plan to reclaim her rightfully deserved attention within the milieu of Oslo's cultural elite.low9-high8/10
- DirectorsJoel CrawfordJanuel MercadoStarsAntonio BanderasSalma HayekHarvey GuillénWhen Puss in Boots discovers that his passion for adventure has taken its toll and he has burned through eight of his nine lives, he launches an epic journey to restore them by finding the mythical Last Wish.high8/10, a big big improvement from the first when it comes to well, everything. The animation is ten times better and less choppy. The colors and lighting pop out at you like a picture book and the villains are actually intimidating. It's super witty and knows how to portray anxiety attacks which is hilarious considering it's coming from puss in fucking boots and not say Velma which takes itself too seriously.. The songs are really catchy too. Overall just very likeable. If I were to nitpick maybe the jokes aren't all funny but this does so much more right then wrong. Very charismatic and engaging. Dreamworks is here bringing new stuff to the table while I have some mixed feelings on where pixar is going. At first when I heard the minions studio is taking over I was on the fence but if they're making stuff like this then Im fully on board.
- DirectorAlex GarlandStarsJessie BuckleyRory KinnearPaapa EssieduA young woman goes on a solo vacation to the English countryside following the death of her ex-husband.high8/10, beautiful cinematography and use of colors. Demented visuals and practical cgi effects. Nerve-racking story and well dimensioned characters. Don't believe the hate train until you've seen it yourself. I didn't interpret it that way but hey I might be wrong so you be the judge. Me personally, loved it.
- DirectorHalina ReijnStarsAmandla StenbergMaria BakalovaMyha'laWhen a group of rich 20-somethings plan a hurricane party at a remote family mansion, a party game turns deadly.low8/10, a very well directed movie that messes with natural light, tight editing and has something to say like people using victim language or buzz words to describe them or get out of situations they've created. It's well shot and euphoric at times besides that. Every actor except maybe the main character do an amazing job (not that she was awful but the others stood out while she didn't as much.) I can see this as a cult classic in the future. The director is promising and she did a astonishing job. It's a movie that knows what it is btw and some of the stuff to make it work at least make some sense though there are moments where I question if it could have happened. Other than that check it out. A fun movie to watch with friends.
- DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaKeke PalmerBrandon PereaThe residents of a lonely gulch in inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery.low8/10, IMO Jordan Peeles best movie yet (slightly better than Get Out). Best shot, best let up to interpretation, great cast, awesome directing. A movie about exploitation which Logan Paul didn't see which I consider hilarious. I hate to admit this but I thought Peele would be a one-time hit wonder with Get Out since I didn't like Us that much (wasn't bad but compared to this and Get Out there wasn't much to say about it for me.) He proved me wrong.
- DirectorDavid BrucknerStarsOdessa A'zionJamie ClaytonAdam FaisonA young woman struggling with addiction comes into possession of an ancient puzzle box, unaware that its purpose is to summon the Cenobites.low8/10, probably my favorite piece of hellraiser content. Don't want to reveal too much but it blows you away with what you do know about Hellraiser. The acting is finally great and there are arcs which is surprisingly rare for a horror film like this. Pretty scary and atmospheric. I do have some problems with the music stings but besides that and minor issues with story: give this one a watch. Made by the guy who made the best segment in VHS (the vampire one), made The Ritual (which is good besides the writing but it seems like this is why he just did it himself, making a good decision in my book), and the Nighthouse. He finally proved himself here as everything before this point has gotten better. Excited to know what he does next.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsBrendan FraserSadie SinkTy SimpkinsA reclusive, morbidly obese English teacher attempts to reconnect with his estranged teenage daughter.low8/10, easily the best thing about this movie are the performances, especially from Brenden Fraiser. He gives it his all and you can tell he focused on little things that added to the acting like the breathing and the weight that comes with his character. I also liked how small the cinematography gets and how it feels very restricting and claustrophobic. The music was alright, nothing too special but it fit. The fat suit at first looks weird but as it kept going I didn't notice. Very wholesome but also very soul-crushing. Maybe at times it's a little melodramatic but I didn't have issue because the writing and acting save it from being too far-fetched from reality. All in all a great film that you may need breaks from because of the awkward emotion-yelling. Hard to rewatch back to back because of it but otherwise I'll be buying this and seeing it plenty
- DirectorLuca GuadagninoStarsTimothée ChalametTaylor RussellMark RylanceA young woman embarks on a 1000 mile odyssey through America where she meets a disenfranchised drifter. But all roads lead back to their terrifying pasts and to a final stand that will determine whether love can survive their otherness.low8-high7/10, this movie is shocking and doesn't hold back in the regard of violence. At some points it's almost like you have to look away, and let me tell you I'm not squeamish at all but this film made me double take a lot. I think they're just trying to show us how violent a vampire would truly be. Some of the turns are easily foreseen though and that would be one gripe besides maybe not being to its full potential. Some are shocking for the sake of shocking but don't derogate from the story for being so. I really liked the atmosphere and music the most, and while the story being nothing too original; I had a lot of fun and would see it again
EDIT: apparently not vampires soooooo, still good but I am more lossed. Makes it more disturbing in the way it comes to them naturally and makes you ask why them. so I like it - DirectorAli AbbasiStarsZar Amir EbrahimiDiana Al HussenSoraya HelliA journalist descends into the dark underbelly of the Iranian holy city of Mashhad as she investigates the serial killings of sex workers by the so called "Spider Killer", who believes he is cleansing the streets of sinners.high7/10, this is grit at its grittiest. filmed like a documentary, this movie moves through a reporter investigating (and better may I add) about the serial killing of muslim prostitutes in Iran and the way the society reacts to it. This is some heart wrenching and powerful stuff. A very human film. Being stuck between your culture and what's right happens a lot and especially in muslim countries where rights or what is right is something far from each other. Very guttural and sticks with you
- DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsDaniel Giménez CachoGriselda SicilianiXimena LamadridAn acclaimed documentarian goes on an introspective journey through surreal dreamscapes to reconcile with the past, the present and his Mexican identity.high7/10, this film feels like if Terrence Malick and David Lynch had a baby and was dating Alejandro on the side. Which is a good thing mind you but I do have to say it's his most different film compared to his others. Of course there's his one track shots and ways around a mirror that have made him known but there are the fantastical dream elements that were a small part in Birdman that play a larger part here because as he describes, "it's a docu-fiction". I think he means there are real elements but because of how time has passed has made those real events "dreamlike" and "fiction". There is also the main character who I assume was a part of director. He questions his heritage and what's it like to be Mexican. While I didn't get everything, I think I got the gest of it. The camerawork is godlike, the cinematography and chorography were well mixed. The acting was great and so was the symbolism. Second watch is a must
- DirectorsJoseph WinterVanessa WinterStarsJoseph WinterMelanie StoneJason K. WixomA disgraced internet personality attempts to win back his followers by livestreaming one night alone in a haunted house. But when he accidentally upsets a vengeful spirit, his big comeback event becomes a real-time fight for his life.high7/10, very fun and funny movie about a livestreamer stuck in a haunted house. This annoying narcissist youtuber plays such a believable character, the only things that stand out are the things he does. The chat is hilarious and the multiple cameras make it more elaborate. Some scenes don't mesh well but for the most part it felt very thought out. Don't take this too seriously and you'll probably love it. Very well done camp POGS
- DirectorHirokazu KoreedaStarsSong Kang-hoGang Dong-wonBae DoonaWhen a young mother reconsiders abandoning her baby, she discovers a scheme selling foundlings for adoption.7/10, a great drama that isn't too challenging as this director knows his way with wholesome plots and knows his way around a camera in general. The sentimental stuff isn't too overbearing nor pretentious and just set right. While I did enjoy shoplifters more that has to do it with cinematography rather than story which this shares a lot of similarities with. The acting makes sense in the story and real life together. While not totally blown away I was entertained by most of what they've shown besides real sappy moments. Not his best nor his worst but still great overall.
- DirectorsGuillermo del ToroMark GustafsonStarsEwan McGregorDavid BradleyGregory MannA father's wish magically brings a wooden boy to life in Italy, giving him a chance to care for the child.7/10, very impressive. The animation is very smooth plus fluid and the colors and their details pop out. Most settings are boring but not here as it's rich in personality and lived in. The voice acting for a change is for the better as they put all their emotions into it. All of the characters are lovely which is what I didn't get from Wendell and Wild. A lot more dark than most people would expect but if you know the director then you know that's nothing new. What is new are the songs and just like the original they fit the tone they're going for. You could maybe argue the story is nothing original but I felt the execution was so I don't dock points really imo. This is my favorite piece of Pinocchio content so my hat is off to Guillermo del Toro. There was an awful Disney Pinocchio this year that was rushed to compete with this and down it but actually waiting to finish your art shows quality is better than quantity.
- DirectorJeff TremaineStarsJohnny KnoxvilleSteve-OChris PontiusAfter 11 years, the Jackass crew is back for another crusade.lowtosolid7/10, my least favorite Jackass but man, it's fucking Jackass. Very fun and it's opening is very cinematic, being a Godzilla fan made it more enjoyable too. Don't take your kid to see of course as this is a very adult film with a lot of genitalia, more than normal for Jackass.
- DirectorKyle Edward BallStarsLucas PaulDali Rose TetreaultRoss PaulTwo children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing, and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished.low7-high6/10, terrifying and eerie. maybe a little slow. reminds me something I would have dreamt when I was little. like a vhs from hell. some heavy stuff too so don't go into it expecting a wild ride, it's more laid back than that.
- DirectorJoseph KosinskiStarsTom CruiseJennifer ConnellyMiles TellerThe story involves Maverick confronting his past while training a group of younger Top Gun graduates, including the son of his deceased best friend, for a dangerous mission.low7-high6/10, very fun and better than the original. Definitely belongs near the bottom of the list but deserves to be on the list nonetheless. Better than a guilty pleasure
