Kumamoto City-born Shimada Yoko is best known in the west as Mariko from the 1980 mini-series Shogun. The lady-in-waiting role created an interest in Japan and its culture overseas and introduced Japanese history to foreign audiences. She won the Golden Globe For Best Performance by an Actress in a TV-Series - Drama category and was nominated for a Prime-time Emmy Award for her work on the serial in 1981. Shimada, who spoke some English for the serial, had been acting for years prior to Shogun however. She began learning ballet since age three and wanted to become a ballerina until her high high school days. Her family had moved to Tokyo when she was eight. She obtained an agent and began acting while in junior high school. The TV serial Zoku Hyouten made her famous beginning 1970. She released a nude photo book, called Kir Royal, in 1992. She was 39 and the photo book became a bestseller shifting half a million copies. At 57 she starred in an 'AV' pornography video called Mikkai in 2011. Born Hiramaru Kumiko in Chiba Prefecture's Sanbu-gun (now separated into Sanmushi and rural Sanbu-gun), which is next door to Narita, Japan on the 17th of June 1978, Kumiko Aso began her film career with 1995's Bad Guy Beach despite a lack of interest in acting at the time. It was 1998's Dr. Akagi, which introduced her to a wide audience in Japan. She garnered Japan Academy Prize for Best Supporting Actress for this film. Ironically, her manager had sent her to this movie's auditions and Kumiko would claim later she was not even sure what she was auditioning for. Either way, this film would not be the last, which would accord her an award. She had initially aimed to become a pop star and had sent an application for an audition. She participated in a Japanese schoolgirl audition for the Young Jump weekly magazine, which she won in 1995. She has become a well-known actress, model and product representative in her native country. Aso has also starred in a couple of Kiyoshi Kurosawa films, had a cameo in the cult film Tenten and became a stalker in Moteki, by which time she had cut her hair for an older look. Earlier she had expanded her horizons and played a leading role as an Iranian-Japanese in the 2007 Iranian film Hafez. She had contemplated quitting acting in 2006, but persisted in the profession because she enjoyed her time in Jiko Keisatsu TV serial. She married stylist Daisuke Iga in late 2007 after dating for four years and gave birth to their daughter in 2012. She gave birth to a boy in 2016. She cites reading manga as a hobby. Kudoh Yuki is an accomplished Japanese singer, former teen idol and actress whose resume includes more than half a dozen records, starring roles in Japanese, Japan-Iran and Japan-Canada films, stage and anime productions. She was only seventeen when she was working overseas, in the USA, filming a movie called Mystery Train, a film she has cited as her favourite role. Born on January 17th, 1971, Kudoh won acclaim as early as 1984 as the Best Newcomer at the sixth Yokohama Film Festival for her first feature length appearance, which was for the film The Crazy Family. There is not much that makes Kashiwazaki famous, except the worrying presence of a nuclear power plant, but the city has Mihiro Tangicuhi a.k.a. simply Mihiro. Born Yamase Hiromi, she is a Japanese actress, writer, singer, gravure and AV idol from Kashiwazaki City in Niigata Prefecture. She began her career as a gravure idol in 2001 and singer with her debut single SunFlower of 2004, but entered the AV universe a year thereafter. She entered the world of mainstream acting in 2006 with an appearance on TV Tokyo's drama 2nd House with gravure idol Sayaka Isoyama and increasingly appeared on TV variety shows and commercials. She was also a member of the short-lived Man-zoku Divas adult video star group. By 2007 she had a recurring role on TV Asahi's Tissue serial. She starred in the film Cruel Restaurant in 2008, which mixed fun, cooking, sex and dumplings. She continued her roles on television, cinema and adult video realms. She and many other S1 agency actresses like Ozawa Maria were regularly on TV Osaka's variety show Please Muscat or Onegai Muscat. 2009 brought the Nude autobiography, which went over her life including her entry into the porn world. Mihiro was in Korean Classroom, alongside Aoi Sora, in 2009, which aired on Korean television. Nude became a movie in 2010. Iijima Ai was born in Koto Ward, Tokyo. Her birth name was Matsue Ookubo, but she would later also use Ai Candy and Mitsuko Ishii as stage names. She had a troubled childhood, according to her autobiography, where she hated her parents so much that she ran away from her home and lives on the streets. She lost her grandfather at a young age and despite doing well at elementary school could not pass to enter high school from junior high. She made a living as a hostess at night clubs, engaging in compensated dating and working at a karaoke bar. She began her adult video acting in 2002 and in one year became Japan's top porn star. She concurrently made the transition to TV by appearing on TV Tokyo's Gilgamesh Night, which was an erotic early morning show. She released a music single called Naisho De Ai Ai bizarrely involving uncoordinated children dancing, an up-skirt shot, soldiers in uniform and her with a tank and obtained a regular spot on a TV talk show. She also appeared in the mainstream movie Purupuru Tenshi Teki Kyujitsu as an angel in 1993. Her 2000 novel Platonic Sex was a bestseller in Japan selling over a million copies. She would incorporate many autobiographical details in it. Fuji TV made a four-hour mini-serial and Toho a movie based on the book. Both were toned down. She was a regular on TV on a show called KinSuma (SNAP band's Friday program). By now she had become an AIDS activist, something which is rare in Japan, and had worked with the United Nations and the Japanese government among others. By 2006 she was in ill health and had taken time off from appearing in variety shows. There was a report that her talent agency, or employee thereof, had ripped off the equivalent of a million dollars from her and she was in emotional and physical pain. These lead to her retirement from television with the announcement coming on TBS' Sunday Japan. She was 34. She had suffered from kidney and urinary tract infection. She was found dead in hey Shibuya, Tokyo apartment in on December 24th, 2008. The autopsy report assessed that she had been dead for a week. She was 36 when police reported cause of death as pneumonia. Others suspected and reported suicide or aids-related illness. This side of the century, and since 2003, she began book reading and narrating Japanese folklore ('Kojiki' - oldest surviving chronicle in Japan) at various shrines and became an honourary professor at Tokyo's Kokugakuin University. She married writer Uozumi Tsutomu in 1983 and gave birth to a son Ouzumi Yu in 1984; he is now an NHK announcer. Like all Japanese celebrities, she has endorsed a dozen corporate products. She is represented by Ikushima Kikaku Shitsu.
