New and Upcoming Horror Movies and Shows

Something wicked lurks in the Deep South in Ryan Coolger’s first horror movie. Michael B. Jordan stars as twin brothers fleeing a troubled past, only to discover a powerful evil waiting for them in their hometown. This is the fifth collaboration between the director and actor, who have been working together since Fruitvale Station, Coogler’s feature debut in 2013. In addition to Jordan, the writer-director has assembled an enviable cast that includes Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, and Jack O’Connell, among others.

Ten years ago, Supermassive Games delivered a unique video game that placed players into a horror movie they could control. “Until Dawn” told the story of eight friends with a secret past as they gathered for a weekend at a remote mountain lodge. What made the game so memorable was that every decision players made could affect both which characters survived the ordeal and how the ending played out. The game was a hit with horror fans, and folks were soon speculating that a movie couldn’t be far behind. Now, ten years later, Sony is granting our wish with an adaptation that takes a clever approach to the game’s beloved butterfly effect. David F. Sandberg (Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation) directs the film which finds the characters trapped in a time loop filled with monsters, killers, and supernatural frights that they must keep at bay to survive until dawn. Among the cast is Odessa A’zion, who gained horror fame as the star of 2022’s Hellraiser and Peter Stormare who will reprise his role from the original video game.

No plot synopsis necessary for this high-concept slasher comedy, directed by Eli Craig (Tucker and Dale vs. Evil). If the Terrifier films are too much for you (and why wouldn't they be?), Clown in a Cornfield offers a much more accessible option for clown horror. Based on Adam Cesare’s Bram Stoker Award-winning YA novel about small-town teens terrorized by a bloodthirsty clown, the film was a hit with the midnight crowds at SXSW. With any luck, we'll be seeing more of Frendo the Clown since Cesare has already published two sequel novels that can be harvested to make a new horror franchise.

In real life, it will have been only 23 years since Danny Boyle's not-zombie film 28 Days Later, but you'll hear no complaints from us. Boyle returns to direct this sequel written by frequent collaborator Alex Garland (who wrote the original). Also coming back: Cillian Murphy, who's joined by castmates Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes.

From the opening frames of Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy’s horror thriller you can tell you’re in for something different. The grainy handheld shot of a bound man dragging himself toward a mailbox to send out a help note makes you feel like you’re watching a movie from the bygone era of low-budget direct-to-video movies of the 1980s. What follows is a shifty thriller that covers familiar ground, but adds a novel angle (undeliverable mail investigators), an abundance of synthesizers (on screen and in the score), and a drab retro-midwest aesthetic that feels more authentic than the neon glow that typically passes for ‘80s nostalgia in modern movies and TV.

Horror titans Blumhouse and director Christopher Landon—who collaborated on horror comedies Happy Death Day and Freaky—are back with a high-concept thriller about the perils of AirDrop. Meghann Fahy (“The White Lotus,” “The Perfect Couple”) is the unfortunate recipient of some disturbing phone drops during a date. Trigger warning: If you find looking at your phone during dinner rude, this movie may send you over the edge.

Even the most seasoned horror fans should prepare themselves for Michael Shanks’ Together. Billed as a movie about the horror of codependency, the writer-director’s feature debut stars real-life couple Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a husband and wife whose move to the country triggers a supernatural incident with shocking consequences. Sundance’s programming team called the film “wild and crazy,” but our ears really perked up when they hinted that some body horror is in store.

The sprawling world of The Conjuring returns to its flagship series as Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga return as Ed and Lorraine Warren. Veteran franchise Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona, The Nun II, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) is directing.
