Crusades Films
The Crusades were a series of religious wars initiated by the Christian Latin Church in the medieval period. The most well-known expeditions were those to the Holy Land between 1095 and 1291, with the aim of conquering Jerusalem from Muslim rule. These campaigns played a significant role in European history and declined after the 15th century. Pope Urban II proclaimed the first expedition at the Council of Clermont in 1095, gaining support from Europeans of all social backgrounds.
Motivations for participation varied, such as religious salvation, feudal obligations, fame, and economic or political advantage. Later crusades were more organized, often led by kings and granted papal indulgences. The initial successes established four Crusader states, but ended with the fall of Acre (a city in the coastal plain region of the Northern District of the present-day State of Israel) in 1291.
Other church-sanctioned campaigns targeted Christians who disobeyed papal rulings, such as those against groups known as heretics (such as the Albigensian Crusade and the Hussite Wars), the Ottoman Empire, and for political reasons. The Crusades also included the Northern Crusades against pagan tribes (led by Germans, Poles and Scandinavians against the pagan Baltic, Finnic and West Slavic peoples) and crusades against Christians (Orthodox Christian East Slavs). Popular crusades, like the Children's Crusade, were unsanctioned by the Church, which means they are not considered an actual Crusade.
