A strange boy named Tsukasa appears in the online video game "The World". He claims to be alive, and without a computer.

A player of a popular online role-playing game known as "The World" plays the game to investigate what it did to put his friend in a coma.

In the first volume of the .hack//Liminality series, a Japanese school girl Mai Minase and her friend Tomonari Kasumi became unconscious from playing an online computer game and was rushed to the hospital. Fortunately, Mai Minase regained consciousness, but Tomonari remains in a comatose state. Later after the incident, Mai is one day on her way to school until she ran into a man named Junichiro Tokuoka who claims to know what caused her friend Tomonari to be in a coma. At that time, Mai doesn't know or believes him. Later, Mai had no choice but to believe Tokuoka and tries to find out how the popular online game, "The World" did this to Tomonari. Can Mai and Tokuoka find out clues about "The World" and wake Tomonari Kasumi up out of his coma?

This is the second game in the .hack// series for the PlayStation 2.

In the second volume of the .hack//Liminality series, Yuki Aihara was a school girl who one day went to a school theater and while watching a movie, the words "The World" suddenly appeared on the big screen and suddenly, the entire town of Yokohama was blacked out due to power shutting off. People are desperately trying to escape and Yuki tries to get out as well. Suddenly, a mysterious woman who claims that she happens to work at the school theater helps Yuki find the way out of the theater. Can Yuki escape from the black out crisis and join up with Junichiro Tokuoka to get the answers about "The World"?

The World is falling apart. Kite continues his desperate attempt to recover Orca from a coma. But is he too late? Will an alliance with his former rival be enough to stop the powerful force that is behind The World? And what of his friends. Has Mia gone insane? What is wrong with Blackrose? All questions will be answered in time, but time is not on his side...

In the third volume of the .hack//Liminality series, Junichiro Tokuoka travels to Tokyo, Japan to talk with a girl named Kyoko Tohno about the mysteries of "The World", an online computer game that put some people in a comatose state. At the same time, Kyoko has received a strange cell phone e-mail from Helba. They continue to discuss and are trying to get clues about everything related to "The World". They later meet a mysterious man named Sato Ichiro and speak with him to get answers. Will Tokuoka and the three girls Mai, Yuki, and Kyoko that he cooperates with be able to find the mysteries and clues of "The World" and save the comatose victims?

The fourth game in the .hack// series for the PlayStation 2.

In the last volume of the .hack//Liminality series, Junichiro Tokuoka, Mai Minase, Yuki Aihara, Kyoko Tohno, and Sato Ichiro breaks into the computer facility and use the computer with the equipments for the online game "The World" to try and revive Tomonari Kasumi. While they do this, they also must watch for the guards who are coming to stop them. Tokuoka and Mai begins the process and Kyoko, Yuki and Sato Ichiro buys time to distract the guards. Can Tokuoka, the three girls and Sato Ichiro be able to complete their mission before time runs out for Tomonari Kasumi? Only one way to find out.

Helba has prepared a special hot springs for some much needed rest and relaxation. Tsukasa, Mimiru, BlackRose, Kite and other friends from The World decide they are due for some soaking in the hot springs themselves. There is a catch, however: not only will Helba not reveal its exact location, but she insists that role-playing is forbidden. So who will find it first? And who keeps killing the other characters? Note: This is a parody of the .hack series with appearance of the characters from .hack//SIGN, .hack//Udeden and the games. It is also referred to as "episode 29" of .hack//SIGN. This OVA was originally a giveaway in Japan for those who bought all four .hack-games and will probably be included in the US-release of .hack//Quarantine.

Shugo and Rena coincidentally win legendary characters to play in The World. When invincible monsters are appearing and players are getting hospitalized, he is coiled up in the investigation of this familiar phenomenon.

".hack//Roots" follows Haseo's guild activities before ".hack//G.U.," delving into consequences of fire that wrecked "The World" MMO, prompting 2016 launch of revamped "The World R:2" version.

The characters from previous .hack//G.U. Games and .hack//Roots receive an email from Ovan. He is requesting them to go to Hidden Forbidden Festival where is set up a mysterious summer festival. There they find an AIDA Chim Chim who wishes to peacefully co-exist with the other players of The World. It then transforms into the word "Returner", so they assume it to mean that Ovan will return to The World.

After one of his friends falls into a coma playing an online game called The World, Haseo logs in to find the man responsible. But before he can unravel The World's many mysteries, he'll have to awaken the secret power hidden in the code of his character.

Tobias, Mary, and Sakuya challenge the impregnable "The One Shin", but they lose their way in the maze and unintentionally trap other guild members. A mysterious cat is watching their blunder. Is it another player character or NPC?

In 2024, the computer network prevails throughout daily life. Sora Yuuki is a 14-year-old girl. One day, she is invited to an online game "The World". After an accident in the game, the real world begins to deform.
