- DirectorMark WatersStarsLindsay LohanJonathan BennettRachel McAdamsCady Heron is a hit with The Plastics, the A-list girl clique at her new school, until she makes the mistake of falling for Aaron Samuels, the ex-boyfriend of alpha Plastic Regina George.7.7/10
Weird film to start the year off with. I was forced by a girl to watch film she liked and in return she would watch something I liked.
Well, it wasn't bad. It was funny, mostly well paced, surprisingly well acted, and it was pretty good. I hate how they are doing basic math in this film and pretending it's super hard.
I also wish Regina got a full character arc. I really like the trope where a "mean girl" gets a redemption arc such as Pacifica from Gravity Falls. Here they copped out with her character and left the film feeling like it was missing out on something essential. - DirectorPeter BergStarsMark WahlbergMichelle MonaghanJ.K. SimmonsThe story of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the aftermath, which includes the city-wide manhunt to find the terrorists responsible.7.2/10
Well turns out Mean Girls wasn't the first film I watched this year. I completely forgot about this one, but it was good. I mean it was really cheesy, but it was really tense. The whole plot with Dun Meng escaping was fantastic. The villains being so human added to the horror of it all.
Not perfect or all that good, but it was a good time. - DirectorTerry GeorgeStarsDon CheadleSophie OkonedoJoaquin PhoenixPaul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager, houses over a thousand Tutsi refugees during their struggle against the Hutu militia in Rwanda, Africa.8.8/10
Another really tense film. I love the escalation of bargaining in this film. It was actually fun to see the main character bargain his way through things. It had a nice arc where the main character originally does not care for people other than his family, but evolves caring more about them.
The first 30 minutes had a really good build up of tension with subtle things like the light flickering. The film has a good bit of characters and I liked them all despite them not developing. - DirectorPaul GreengrassStarsTom HanksBarkhad AbdiBarkhad AbdirahmanThe true story of Captain Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the U.S.-flagged MV Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.7.3
I have accidentally fallen into a pattern of historical thriller movies in some way involving terrorists or the like.
This film was good, but it sort of stalled at a lot of times. It's not as good as a constantly moving film like Hotel Rwanda. The film was at it's strongest while in the first act in the boat. Great acting from both the pirates and Tom Hanks.
Would have been better with better pacing. A shortened runtime would have done this film wonders. - DirectorEthan CoenJoel CoenStarsJeff BridgesMatt DamonHailee SteinfeldA stubborn teenager enlists the help of a tough U.S. Marshal to track down her father's murderer.7.7
I could barely understand that came out of Jeff Bridge's mouth in this film. I watched without subtitles...which was a big mistake. But god the last 40 minutes were really great. The small epilogue with the older girl was absolute peak. I just love when movies do that. A lot of this movie was really mediocre and meandering around, but I think it had more pay off than films like Captain Philips. - DirectorAlexander PayneStarsPaul GiamattiDa'Vine Joy RandolphDominic SessaA cranky history teacher at a prep school is forced to remain on campus over the holidays with a grieving cook and a troubled student who has no place to go.8.7
Very well acted and witty film. The opening scenes were a bit dull, but as soon as the main dynamic of the film started shaping up it became highly entertaining. It's a textbook character arc with Paul and the execution was great. It had a cozy feel to it all and I could see myself doing a re-watch next Christmas. - DirectorJohn FrankenheimerStarsRobert De NiroJean RenoNatascha McElhoneA freelancing former U.S. Intelligence Agent tries to track down a mysterious package that is wanted by the Irish and the Russians.7.3
Based on action scenes alone this would be a 8.8. The car chase scene before the climax was exhilarating and so was the first hour or so of the film.
I will not forgive this film for throwing away Sean Bean's character like that. I absolutely loved the energy he brought to the film in the first thirty minutes. "A bit of a raspberry jam, innit." I really wanted him to come back and redeem himself. But the film threw him aside for some of the most boring heist film protagonists I have seen.
The plot was mediocre and it really fell off towards the ending. They had great actors, but they had mediocre roles. - DirectorEdward ZwickStarsMatthew BroderickDenzel WashingtonCary ElwesRobert Gould Shaw leads the U.S. Civil War's first all-black volunteer company, fighting prejudices from both his own Union Army, and the Confederates.9.3
I had no idea I would love this film so much. The camera work (Specifically the staging of it all), the acting, the characters, and THE MUSIC. I think one of the reasons I loved this film so much is because it practically had the same ending as a story I had been working on. This film filled me with something. - DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsTimothée ChalametRebecca FergusonZendayaA noble family becomes embroiled in a war for control over the galaxy's most valuable asset while its heir becomes troubled by visions of a dark future.8.5
I once tried watching this movie and got bored. I tried it again this time with the rest of my family and I really enjoyed it. I personally think the soundtrack was overrated and man it could have been so much better.
There were some fantastic moments that could have pure "peak fiction" but it was always off in some way. Either the soundtrack being incredibly boring for the scene or the angle for the scene being bad. The soundtrack isn't bad and it was astoundingly good at times.
I was about 2 hours into the film and I felt like too little actually happened in it. But as the film went on it started to pay off. It was epic even. I'm going to see the second part in theaters! - DirectorNorman JewisonStarsTopolNorma CraneLeonard FreyIn pre-revolutionary Russia, a Jewish peasant with traditional values contends with marrying off three of his daughters with modern romantic ideals while growing anti-Semitic sentiment threatens his village.9.1
Yes, I have watched this film before a long time ago. Back when I was 10 or so. I was really depressed by this film originally, but this time around the subtlety and the beauty of the film I had forgotten touched me. The comedy of the film and oh the dialogue is so quotable.
It's heartbreaking in a way I love. When Tevye said " God be with you" to Cahva, fiction peaked. - DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsEmma StoneMark RuffaloWillem DafoeAn account of the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter.7.4
It's a shame to say the film disappointed me. It was good there is no denying that. It was well directed with great performances (Well only one great performance being Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo was entertaining somewhat). The strongest element of the film is in the smaller subtle details and THE COMEDY. This film is much funnier than I was expecting.
The themes of the film are much simpler than they seem...and got quite redundant. It just never went in a super interesting direction. As the plot turned several times in the second half I was just left saying "Okay, that's cool i guess" repeatedly.
It never superseded itself with high emotional moments or absolutely gripping character moments and relationships. Most of the relationships in this film went down the most traditional predictable route possible.
The film could have gone a super interesting path towards the end and with its plot twists. It could have pulled off an amazing emotional moment. But it chose to just be fine instead.
There are a lot of small things I appreciate from this film. The way the sex scenes did not feel like they were "horny" and shot through this purely "male gaze" was great. The music suited the scenes incredibly well, but it was not memorable. The editing was smart at times, and for the most part the film looked gorgeous.
I did enjoy this film and I think a lot of people will love it. - DirectorFred ZinnemannStarsPaul ScofieldWendy HillerRobert ShawThe story of Sir Thomas More, who stood up to King Henry VIII when the King rejected the Roman Catholic Church to obtain a divorce and remarry.
