On an isolated island in Brittany at the end of the eighteenth century, a female painter is obliged to paint a wedding portrait of a young woman.
    DirectorCéline SciammaStarsNoémie MerlantAdèle HaenelLuàna Bajrami
I think few people have missed the hype of this movie and I truly think it deserves every praise it gets. We follow our main lead Marianne, a French portrait painter during the eighteenth century. She is commissioned to paint a portrait of Héloïse, a wealthy young woman. An amazing screenplay written and directed by Céline Sciamma. This quickly became one of my favorite movies of all time. I also recommend reading this article after you have seen it to read about some of Sciammas' thoughts behind the movie.

An aspiring photographer develops an intimate relationship with an older woman in 1950s New York.
    DirectorTodd HaynesStarsCate BlanchettRooney MaraSarah Paulson
This is another one of my favorites, based on the novel Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith(I truly recommend giving it a read). Therese Beliviet a young woman falls in love with the elder Carol beginning a beautiful love story set in the 1950s. A beautiful setting pared with a lovely soundtrack and starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, what can go wrong?

    Worth your time!

    DirectorLukas MoodyssonStarsAlexandra DahlströmRebecka LiljebergErica Carlson
I seldom see this movie on other lists of lesbian movies but this is also one of my favorites. A Swedish movie set and filmed in 1998 follows two young teenage girls that are slowly falling for each other.

    Worth your time!

A naive teenager is sent to rehab camp when her straitlaced parents and friends suspect her of being a lesbian.
    DirectorJamie BabbitStarsNatasha LyonneClea DuVallMichelle Williams
This is a lesbian cult-classic! Great humor and a great performance from Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall. Megan a teenage girl is sent away to True directions to become straight meets Graham.

A movie that I first watched as 13 but still come back to almost every year.

    Worth your time!

An adventurous love story between two young women of different social and economic backgrounds who find themselves going through all the typical struggles of a new romance.
DirectorMaria MaggentiStarsLaurel HollomanNicole Ari ParkerMaggie Moore
In my opinion this is a movie that should get more recognition. It is a great feel-good teenage love story with The L words, Laurel Holloman, playing one of the main roles. A movie where Randy falls in love with wealthy and popular Evie. This should in my opinion get the same cult-classic approval that But I'm a Cheerleader has.

    Worth your time!

Kiss me is another Swedish movie that is quite good. Mia is engaged to her fiance Tim when she meets Frida at their parents' wedding, where they soon after eventually fall for each other.

Not an incredible movie but I would say it is worth your time.

Another movie set in the 1950s but in a small community. Vivian a professor going through a divorce meets the younger Cay at a ranch in the deserts. Giving you great cinematography paired with a lovely script and great actors.

(If you have seen The Miseducation of Cameron Post you might recognize one specific scene)

This is a slow-building love story but truly worth your time.

This is truly a fun and light-hearted spy movie starring young girls as spies, where Amy, a spy, falls in love with the villain, Lucy Diamond.

A young woman moves from the French countryside to Paris and begins a passionate love affair with a feminist leader in this drama set in 1970s France.
DirectorCatherine CorsiniStarsCécile de FranceIzïa HigelinNoémie Lvovsky
This movie takes place in France during the 1970s with feminism as its backdrop. Delphine, a farmer's daughter moves to Paris where she meets Carole, an outspoken feminist activist. They fall passionately in love but unfortunately Delphine's father falls victim to a stroke and she has to go back and take care of the farm. We then follow the two women struggle to remain together.

Truly a great movie that is really worth your time!
  • Natalie Krill and Erika Linder in Below Her Mouth (2016)

    10. Below Her Mouth

    5.5 (15K)
An unexpected affair quickly escalates into a heart-stopping reality for two women whose passionate connection changes their lives forever.
    DirectorApril MullenStarsErika LinderNatalie KrillSebastian Pigott
If you want to have a good laugh then this is the movie for you, but I don't believe that it was the creators' intention. The acting is laughable and on the verge of becoming completely unwatchable. I have endured this movie twice and, once when it came out and one time more recently, I truly regret that decision. The relationship is moving unrealistically fast and gives no depth to the characters.

If you are in it for the sex scenes then you will love it but otherwise, please do yourself a favor and save your self some time and don't watch this!
  • Adèle Haenel and Pauline Acquart in Water Lilies (2007)

One of my favorites! We follow as Marie discovering her sexuality when she falls for the synchronized swim captain Floriane. It might not be your happy love story but it works great in portraying the process of realization of your sexuality.

Another great movie by Céline Sciamma that is really worth your time.
  • Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever in Booksmart (2019)

    DirectorOlivia WildeStarsKaitlyn DeverBeanie FeldsteinJessica Williams
I don't know if I should truly categorize this movie as a lesbian one but one of the main characters is a lesbian, so it will do. We follow two teenage girls during the night of their graduation trying to make up for all the things they have missed during their highschool years. A great comedy!

    DirectorAbdellatif KechicheStarsLéa SeydouxAdèle ExarchopoulosSalim Kechiouche
I know that this one is becoming less popular as time goes which is mostly because of the male director's view of women which is most prominent during the long and uncomfortable sex scenes. But despite that, I really enjoy this one. The chemistry and acting is incredible! Adèle's life is changed when she meets Emma, a young woman with blue hair whom she falls in love with. We follow these two women's relationship from the beginning to the end.

A lighthearted movie but with great political messages trough out. We follow Cheryl a black lesbian filmmaker that is making a documentary on a 1930s black female actor known as The Watermelon Woman. While we are following the documentary we also follow Cheryl falling in love with Dianne. An important movie that discusses many issues throughout the movie.

This is a great one! Based on a novel we follow Ronit returning to an orthodox Jewish community when her father dies. In 1950s small town Britain, a doctor develops a relationship with her young patient's mother.
    DirectorAnnabel JankelStarsBilly BoydGregor SelkirkAnna Paquin
Another one that takes place in the 1950s, a common theme it seems. Based on a novel, a single mother, Lydia meets the new town doctor Jean and they start to build a friendship that later turns into love. The love story is good but I felt that I grew more interested in the characters surrounding them, which is not a bad thing, only interesting. Though I have read that the ending is different from the novels ending, not having read the novel, only synopsizes of the end. I would have preferred the novels ending but overall an enjoyable movie, not a masterpiece but not shit.

    Somewhat worth your time.
  • Julianne Moore and Elliot Page in Freeheld (2015)

New Jersey police lieutenant Laurel Hester and her registered domestic partner Stacie Andree battle to secure Hester's pension benefits when she is diagnosed with terminal cancer.
    DirectorPeter SollettStarsJulianne MooreElliot PageSteve Carell
I somewhat always feel that movies based on a true story become better than if it would have been only fiction. This is the case of Freeheld. We follow a New Jersey police lieutenant, Laurel Hester, and her registered domestic partner, Stacie Andree, both battle to secure Hester's pension benefits when she is diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The story is fantastic and heartbreaking and is nicely portrayed by Elliot Page and Julianne Moore. It is a moving movie but not a truly rememberable one for me but despise that I think that it is important to watch and to keep on remembering and learning history.

    Worth your time.

The story of five girls and one epic night. The girls will find love, lust, girl-fights, rock'n'roll, and a whole lot of stoned sorority girls.
    DirectorAlexandra KondrackeStarsLisa RieffelErin KellyMichelle Lombardo
Girltrash will not be enjoyable if you have not seen the tv show, South Of Nowhere (which I recommend watching), and even then this movie is still not that great. It is a fun musical that is kind of shitty but enjoyable because of the main characters were also a couple in South Of Nowhere.

If you imagine Glee with shittier voices but more lesbian this is what you get. It is truly a comedy that does not take itself to seriously.

I would say that it is almost worth a watch if you have seen South Of Nowhere otherwise I would wait and watch all the other movies on this list before watching this one, except for Below Her Mouth. This one is surprisingly still better than that Below Her Mouth.
  • Piper Perabo, Mischa Barton, and Jessica Paré in Lost and Delirious (2001)

This is what I would call a painful experience!

I would watch this if you are in it for the pain otherwise stay away from this one.

(Despite how depressing this one is, it is still better than Below Her Mouth.)

Edit: With some time I have come to appreciate this movie somewhat more. It is an interesting story but perhaps told wrong or rather ended wrong. Sometimes it is nice to feel for the worth of feeling something.

A student-teacher love story that I did not enjoy. I would recommend Loving Annabelle instead if you want to watch a student/teacher love story. I found myself being a bit uncomfortable.

Another student-teacher love story, better and more realistic than Bloomington but still not that great. (I might just have a dislike for this type of relationship.)
