Best of my gay films
In order of how much I enjoyed them, the depth of its message, and how much I loved the couple! Top 10 are definitely easy recommends while the remaining are enjoyable for the most parts, but probably recommendable for a more specific audience.

- DirectorKeith BehrmanStarsJosh WigginsDarren MannTaylor HicksonTwo popular teen boys, best friends since childhood, discover their lives, families, and girlfriends dramatically upended after an unexpected incident occurs on the night of a 17th birthday party. This was a rollercoaster of a film. It stayed to me days after thinking about how "love" and "normal" was explored in the film. I absolutely love the couple, even though they don't have a lot of romantic scenes, especially because they are actually played by excellent actors within the characters' age. I especially love the message it portrays about sexuality and friendship. This is one of the best coming-of-age films I enjoy pondering to. Though I need to rewatch it to really savor it's glory more.
- DirectorMartín DeusStarsÁngelo Mutti SpinettaLautaro RodríguezGuillermo PfeningLorenzo lives a sheltered life in Argentine Patagonia with his parents and little brother. When a good friend of the family dies in an accident, his son Caíto is taken in by them. One of the most heart-wrenching couple I've watched. This film is pretty straight-forward than Giant Little Ones, but I like how it commits well to that. Plus all the scenes were beautifully shot especially when the two main actors are together.
- DirectorsMauro CarvalhoThiago CazadoStarsThiago CazadoPaulo SousaJuliana ZancanaroReserved and solitary, young Lucas lives with his religious aunt in a tranquil country town. When his aunt charitably agrees to let his cousin, Mario, fresh out of jail, stay for a while, mischief and joy affect the whole little community. If I would write a funny, light-hearted, and slightly emotional movie, this would be one. I was obsessed with Mario, one of the couple of this movie, and how he was wonderfully portrayed by the actor. This was everything refreshing, even though it's not that deep which is not really needed for what its trying to be.
- DirectorNeil ArmfieldStarsRyan CorrSarah SnookFrancesco FerdinandiTim and John fell in love at their all-boys high school. Their romance endured for 15 years to laugh in the face of everything life threw at it - the separations, the discrimination, the temptations, the jealousies and the losses.A glimpse of life of a committed husbands that lived through the ups and the downs of their relationship. I cried to this film the most out of all the films in this list. If I would marry someone, I hope our love is as deep and strong as the couple in this film. I loved this movie as much as I've cried watching it.
- DirectorAng LeeStarsJake GyllenhaalHeath LedgerMichelle WilliamsTwo shepherds fall for each other, but their relationship becomes complicated when they both get married to their respective girlfriends.A classic that is a must-see to the majority who loves gay films. Apart from its reshaping of the film industry, I love how open this film explores about sexuality in relation to people and to society. But honestly, anyone would just enjoy looking at the couple's face especially the close-ups. Though, it needs subtitles for those who aren't that keen on hearing english with thick Southern accent.
- DirectorSudhanshu SariaStarsDhruv GaneshSiddharth MenonShiv PandittA weekend trip between friends takes a sudden turn, making them each question what love is and what it means to them. This is another film that explores sexuality and love that is very similar with how Giant Little Ones does. Though the characters' are very different and actually, everything else is different (which is why this is significantly lower than the other film), this film have the same themes that made me ponder about the complexity of sexuality and relationship in relation to society's standard. Honestly, I didn't like the romance with all of the characters mainly because I was confused about their "situationships", but I do find all of them really interesting. This film is a film to watch in a big screen with loud sound system and be lost with it. Another one for rewatching.
- DirectorAndrew NackmanStarsParker YoungEvan ToddChord OverstreetA car mechanic in a small, working class town comes out of the closet to his unsuspecting, blue-collar best friends.Everything about this film happened exactly how I didn't expect them to happen, which is better than good. I thought this film would be a queerbating film about handsome straight-looking men with one that just happens to be gay, but it actually provided depth with the friendship of the protagonist and his friends. Although this doesn't commit to its comedy, drama, nor gay themes, it substantially provided enough of all of them–a jack of all trades. It was enjoyable and it would be a fun movie to watch with friends.
- DirectorPapu CurottoStarsIgnacio RogersEsteban MasturiniJoaquín ParadaTwo boyhood chums, separated soon after sexually awakening together, re-meet as young men with unspoken sexual tensions lying between them. This film committed to its romance and drama genre and portrayed the characters romance in the development that is right up my alley. Although there are a lot to say about the couple, I especially love this movie because of the girl "beard" character which really gave an edge to how I loved this film even though she wasn't there for a long time. Overall, I love every character in this film and the abundant romantic scenes of the couple
- DirectorCory KrueckebergStarsTanner CohenMatthew CampRamon O. TorresA shy but smitten college boy pursues a NY go-go boy through the pretext of making a documentary film about him, with the guys knowing each other only as "Doc" and "Go."This film surprised me a lot. Other than its very indie style, which is unique but fresh, the romance between the couple made me believe in love (lol). This is one of the romance developments that is really my taste. But more than that, the character of Go really made me love this movie with his surprising and charming personality (plus his irresistable-ness).
- DirectorAndré TéchinéStarsSandrine KiberlainKacey Mottet KleinCorentin FilaDamien lives with his mother Marianne, a doctor, while his father is on a tour of duty abroad. He is bullied by Thomas, whose mother is ill. The boys find themselves living together when Marianne invites Thomas to come and stay with them.Tied with The Way He Looks and God's Own Country. Another couple that I specially FREAKING ADORE (which is honestly most of the couples in this list). In the first half of this film, I wasn't really sure where the romance or the story would go, but I enjoyed the sceneries captured. But then the second half begins and the story just starts building up and up and I begin to love the couple even more, even though the romance was spiked up and even jarring at one point (though I didn't mind it).
- DirectorDaniel RibeiroStarsGhilherme LoboFabio AudiTess AmorimLeonardo is a blind teenager searching for independence. His everyday life, the relationship with his best friend Giovana, and the way he sees the world change completely with the arrival of Gabriel.Tied with Being 17 and God's Own Country. This film's couple wins the most adorable couple of this list, not only because of the sweet dynamic they have but also because of the indenial tension they had going on, which was my favorite part of this film, and how it was resolved. I also liked how the film was framed–just another teen romance story.
- DirectorFrancis LeeStarsJosh O'ConnorAlec SecareanuGemma JonesSpring. Yorkshire. Young farmer Johnny Saxby numbs his daily frustrations with binge drinking and casual sex, until the arrival of a Romanian migrant worker for lambing season ignites an intense relationship that sets Johnny on a new path.Tied with Being 17 and The Way He Looks. The couples' romance was very similar to Brokeback Mountain, but I have only realised that after watching because I was honestly more focused on the beautiful sceneries that were so delicately shot. Moreover, I really needed subtitles because of the really REALLY thick accent (which disturbed my experience of the film) of the protagonist that made it hard for me to watch and understand the film. Definitely need a rewatch.
- DirectorBavo DefurneStarsBen Van den HeuvelEva Van der GuchtThomas CoumansA teenage boy's search for love finds him fixated on a boy who lives nearby. One of the films I consider a classic (because I watched it underaged lol), because this film made me love coming-of-age gay films (or made me comfortable watching them). The romance of the couple in this film is one of the "that escalated quickly" type, BUT for some reason it is not jarring at all which is both confusing and delightful. Even though the couple have quite an age difference, it doesn't occur to me at all. Till this day, I imagine scenes from this movie from time to time.
- DirectorAluizio AbranchesStarsJúlia LemmertzFábio AssunçãoJean Pierre NoherTwo brothers develop a very close relationship as they are growing up in an idyllic and happy family. When they are young adults their relationship becomes very intimate, romantic, and sexual. This film is one of the controversial gay films because it involves incest. Though that is also what makes this film great because of how well that aspect is not just dared, but portrayed. When I watch this film, it's never uncomfortable. The romance is great and adorable, but more than that, I love this film because of the parents' interesting reaction to the romance. I believe if everyone in the world is like the parents in this film, the world would be a better world. Worth a watch!
- DirectorLuca GuadagninoStarsTimothée ChalametArmie HammerMichael StuhlbargIt's the summer of 1983, and 17-year-old Elio is spending the days with his family at their villa in Lombardy, Italy. He soon meets Oliver, who's working as an intern for Elio's father. They discover the heady beauty of awakening desire. Now a 21st century "hyped classic," I watched this film (even before it was a hyped classic but the latter film is) thinking it would be another Love, Simon. But to my surprise, it was more than that. If this film is not a coming-of-age film or a teen film, and more drama film, I would have loved it. But the believable, but cheesy romance followed by a heartbreaking and trying-hard-to-be-artsy (but leaves me hanging) ending made this film confusing to me. Though I loved the father's character A LOT plus the lovely shots that were iconic enough for a teen film like this.
- DirectorMischa KampStarsGijs BlomKo ZandvlietJonas SmuldersA sexually awakening gay teen athlete finds himself in a budding relationship with his mutually attracted relay race teammate. This film redefined my preference to the male species. I am thankful for Dutch boys who brings adorableness a new definition. Need to rewatch, forget what happened (watched it half-asleep), but I remember feeling funny (let's just say that) while watching and loving that feeling.
- DirectorNiels Arden OplevStarsVillads BøyeAnders W. BerthelsenSidse Babett KnudsenMartin (14) is forced to deal with confused sexuality and the loss of a mother in a provincial setting in the mid-seventies, where the famed Danish liberation of porn has had its influence on the grownups. This was a whole coming-of-age film, that focused about more than what I want it to focus on, though I enjoyed a lot of it, I don't care for most of it. Like, it could be a short and it would be a high-ranking one on my list.
- DirectorKerstin KarlhuberStarsMichael GrantTom WopatGregory HarrisonA young man returns to his family farm, after a long stay in ex-gay conversion therapy, and is torn between the expectations of his emotionally distant father, and the memories of a past, loving relationship he has tried to bury.A film that starts with somewhat heavy themes, but ends up in a lighthearted way. Another one of the adorable couples, though I craved for more scenes together. Again, does not commit fully to be full romance or drama or coming-of-age, but caters to all of them. I especially love the grading of the film and the peaceful suburb feel.
- DirectorSergio Tovar VelardeStarsAntonio VelázquezAlejandro de la MadridCesar RamosFour stories of love and disgust between men of different generations facing their conflicts and their fearsThis film follows four stories of four different couples that all tackles different aspects/struggles that concerns being gay which is unique to the film. I can see it as four different shorts edited as one film, but I really don't see a substantial reason why the stories needed to be separated and be edited away from each other's sequences since I didn't see any relation to each other than the main theme I mentioned. But that didn't make it uncomfortable to watch and I genuinely liked all of them, but especially the one with Hugo and Andrés.
- DirectorDiemo KemmesiesStarsMartin BruchmannJosef MattesMathias NeuberSilent Youth is a film for misfits, dreamers and lovers. It's the classic story of a coming out, but it focuses on the moments one tends to quickly forget: the first approach, the creaking of the chair while sitting across from each other, not knowing what to say. And it's about the silence.Like its title, this film is S-I-L-E-N-T. But its more than just a gimmick because it actually highlights one of the depths of the film which is the awkwardness and the tension between the couple which is the only actors on screen for the most part. It's mediocre at its best, but memorable.
- DirectorJoel EdgertonStarsLucas HedgesNicole KidmanJoel EdgertonThe son of a Baptist preacher unwillingly participates in a church-supported gay conversion program after being forcibly outed to his parents.Right off the bat, I'd watch this film because of Troye Sivan's song, but ironically, Troye Sivan's scenes in the film was jarring for me. Though this film is more about the experiences the protagonist (which is not Troye) faces through a gay conversion therapy camp, which is based on real life experiences. I think it gives justice to the story it's telling, though I wished for better drama in the scenes (in terms of photography).
- DirectorÁdám CsásziStarsAndrás SütöÁdám VargaSebastian UrzendowskySzabolcs quits football against his father's will and returns to his country in Hungary to take charge of an inheritance from his grandfather. There, he meets Aron and they both explore their identities.A film I didn't have ANY expectations of what to happen, and boy, did everything surprised me. The romance was kind of weird but passable, like I don't exactly understand why they're doing what they're doing but I'm not mad at it? Which is why I wasn't emotionally invested to anything about the film, every character was just "half-developed," but it doesn't leave me hanging. I especially love some of the creative establishing shots that highlights the setting.
- DirectorSimon ShoreStarsBen SilverstoneBrad GortonCharlotte BrittainA tenderly romantic coming-of-age story as two boys in a British school fall in love.Tied with Handsome Devil. The story is framed like any '90s teen romance, except its gay. I especially love the character of Linda (literally for '98 her character is so "WOKE"). And the romance was adorable most of the time and the depth of the fresh realization of sexuality was framed in a way that wasn't jarring, but honestly I can't stand John's (protagonist's love interest) bratty character, but it was acted wonderfully along with Steven, the protagonist.
- DirectorJohn ButlerStarsFionn O'SheaArdal O'HanlonAmy HubermanNed and Conor are forced to share a bedroom at their boarding school. The loner and the star athlete at this rugby-mad school form an unlikely friendship until it's tested by the authorities.Tied with Get Real. Although there is no romance in the genre, I truly believe that there is romance between the couple of this film, although it was very implicit, and if it would be much more explicit which is really a missed opportunity for this film I assure you this film will be much higher in this list because the premise of the couple's relationship and what happened afterwards was exactly how I write my fictions. But the relationship is HEAVILY evaded as platonic. Though this ferris wheel of a ride (not quite a rollercoaster, but still a ride) is very enjoyable especially the comedy and drama of the supposedly love interest and the english teacher brings.
- DirectorDarren SteinStarsMichael J. WillettPaul IaconoSasha PieterseWhat happens after Tanner is outed by his classmates and becomes the title "gay best friend" for three high school queen bees?Tied with Another Gay Movie. I thought this film will be boring and just a lackluster comedy movie that puts gay as a novelty to a mediocre otherwise chick flick, but it was honestly enjoyable with the diversity of the characters that brings a lot to the table, especially with many "woke" characters that spits jarring (but I can stand it), but truthful and substantial lines. I love the little romances and twists the plot surprised me. While I was watching this, I thought of it as a musical, which gave me a more excitable experience thinking what songs each characters would sing.
