Directors: Anthony Chun, Kazuhiro Furuhashi, Junji Nishimura | Stars: Richard Ayoade, Julian Barratt, Rowan Blanchard, Alexa Chung

Votes: 193

(8.5/10) Neo Yokio is as stupidly self-aware and stupidly indulgent as ever. Richard Ayoade, Jaden Smith, and Jude Law deliver as always. I liked season 1 slightly more but that’s just preference

6. The Breaker Upperers (2018)

90 min | Comedy

76 Metascore

For the right price, BFFs Jen and Mel will ruthlessly end any romance. But when one grows a conscience, it threatens to derail their relationship.

Directors: Madeleine Sami, Jackie van Beek | Stars: Madeleine Sami, Jackie van Beek, James Rolleston, Celia Pacquola

Votes: 6,892

(7.5/10) A gutsy, brave, silly and authentically human comedy. Some decisions were a bit strange and other’s problematic, but on the whole I was very impressed by the believable female protagonists and the risks taken to make a comedy bold in such new ways.

7. I Am Mother (2019)

TV-14 | 113 min | Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi

64 Metascore

In the wake of humanity's extinction, a teenage girl is raised by a robot designed to repopulate the earth. But their unique bond is threatened when an inexplicable stranger arrives with alarming news.

Director: Grant Sputore | Stars: Luke Hawker, Rose Byrne, Maddie Lenton, Hazel Sandery

Votes: 99,378

(10/10) This is the ultimate epic & cerebral hard sci-fi masterpiece. I am puzzled by the low rating. I can imagine the all-female-cast may have affected it. Their loss, every performance is stunning and the edgy story makes a philosophical classic.

Interesting fact: no characters have actual names unless you count “Mother”

8. Ad Vitam (2018)

60 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

In a future where regeneration technology lets humans live indefinitely, a cop and a troubled young woman investigate a strange wave of youth suicides.

Stars: Yvan Attal, Garance Marillier, Niels Schneider, Victor Assié

Votes: 1,855

(8/10) Overall series: Ad Vitam is a conceptual mystery cop show that intoxicates me with its philosophical questions, and kept me interested through compelling character stories. The aesthetic decisions in the show range from very intriguing and beautiful, to very well thought out, to incredibly tacky and cliche. However, after watching the series in entirety the world building made these decisions make more sense. It is not about our far future, it is about futuristic ideas that might await us in our future placed in a very fictional utopian society with a history unconnected to our own. It doesn’t take place in far-future France, or even near-future France. It takes place in a utopian country with lots of coast, and even though places like North America and Japan exist the idea of an “outside world” is thought of as a ridiculous idea (and originally misunderstood to mean heaven). Also, although I do love some of the characters, I do prefer more playful characters. This is another reason I do not give it a higher rating, based on my personal preference.

9. Cave of Forgotten Dreams (2010)

G | 90 min | Documentary, History

86 Metascore

Werner Herzog gains exclusive access to film inside the Chauvet caves of Southern France and captures the oldest known pictorial creations of humanity.

Director: Werner Herzog | Stars: Werner Herzog, Jean Clottes, Julien Monney, Jean-Michel Geneste

Votes: 17,794 | Gross: $5.23M

(9/10) Very very good documentary. Very inspired. Watched for a class and am pleasantly surprised. The subject matter is haunting and beautiful, and it was portrayed as such, to a profound degree. There was an unusual side step at the end, otherwise would be 10/10.

Stars: Colin Ford, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Sophie Simnett, Austin Crute

Votes: 23,452

(8.5/10) This was a really amazing show. I accidentally deleted my description just now and it’s really hard to actually summarize what I wrote, so I’ll be as brief as I can. The themes, world building and characters were phenomenal and heartfelt and intriguing af. The first few episodes had clunky cringe writing but they improved. The genre-bending was too ambitious but overall fun. I didn’t feel like the last episode was what it could have been as a conclusion but it was still wonderful. Every episode was intriguing and good. Overall, enjoyed tf out of it.

Votes: 529,535 | Gross: $35.55M

(9.5/10) Based on the cinematography alone, this is the best movie I’ve ever seen. The politics are incredibly aware, the long shots are beautiful, the symbolism is monumental and incredible. Every moment feels immersive and emotional and real.

Director: Paul F. Bernard | Stars: Shemar Moore, Alex Russell, Lina Esco, Kenny Johnson

Votes: 335

(5/10) I watched this 100% because Shane Madej and Ryan Bergara had a cameo, and can confidently say despite how small the cameo they were the best part. I would give it a lower score but I think it's unfair to do that without the context of the other episodes.

(9/10) just an incredibly heartwarming, kind, and relaxing tv show. Really recommend if you’re ok with only one season, which kind of is disappointing.

Votes: 28,682 | Gross: $0.10M

(7/10) I know I have a lot to say about this movie but I’ll have to feel it out. I just loved the character of Johnny and I liked Mary Lou as well. I have a headache and found a lot of this movie clunky but it really had some great stuff. I almost feel like watching it again.

25. Lu Over the Wall (2017)

PG | 112 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

62 Metascore

The story centers on Kai, a gloomy middle school student whose life changes after meeting Lu, a mermaid.

Director: Masaaki Yuasa | Stars: Kanon Tani, Shôta Shimoda, Minako Kotobuki, Sôma Saitô

Votes: 2,689 | Gross: $0.11M

(8.5/10) Kind of weird but very cute and charming. The reviews are absolutely underselling it. Although it has the boy-falls-for-mermaid element that Ponyo does the worldbuilding, and characters are definitely their own thing. It’s very unique and if you see it as contrived you’re not paying attention.

26. Endro~! (2019– )

Director: Shunji Iwai | Stars: Yû Aoi, Anne Suzuki, Shôko Aida, Sei Hiraizumi

Votes: 2,326

(9/10) This is a really amazing movie. It is an intriguing mystery, sentimental, coming-of-age, and even a little bit slice of life at times. The animation style is a bit strange, but it is utilized very well with very creative decisions to make the best of it,

28. A Letter to Momo (2011)

Not Rated | 120 min | Animation, Adventure, Comedy

65 Metascore

11-year-old Momo moves with her mother to a small island town after her father dies. When she arrives, she encounters three goblins that others cannot see who try to help her to cope with the loss of her father and the changes in her life.

Director: Hiroyuki Okiura | Stars: Karen Miyama, Yuka, Daizaburo Arakawa, Toshiyuki Nishida

Votes: 8,153

(6.5/10) The animation style is also kind of creepy in a way that is off putting and the emotionalism in it kind of fell flat. Honestly, I don’t think it is bad, it just didn’t resonate with me for whatever reason and didn’t add anything extra.

29. Train to Busan (2016)

Not Rated | 118 min | Action, Horror, Thriller

73 Metascore

While a zombie virus breaks out in South Korea, passengers struggle to survive on the train from Seoul to Busan.

Director: Yeon Sang-ho | Stars: Gong Yoo, Jung Yu-mi, Ma Dong-seok, Kim Su-an

Votes: 258,908 | Gross: $2.13M

(8/10) The most devastating Zombie movie I've ever seen. Good social themes. heart-pounding every moment. The intensity might be far too much but still incredible.

30. 24 Frames (2017)

Not Rated | 114 min | Drama

77 Metascore

Collection of 24 short four-and-a-half minute films inspired by still images, including paintings and photographs.

Director: Abbas Kiarostami | Star: Mohamad Ramezani Pour

Votes: 2,252 | Gross: $0.03M

(6/10) it was beautiful and very peaceful, interesting “narrative”, but I was more than a little bit bored and I had a few more problems with it, too. My rating could be skewed by the fact that it was a school assignment, but I’m not going to be dishonest about how I experienced the movie and I was very bored. I think that it would have been much more interesting if the imagery was more varied. For an anthology, there was not enough variety. The crows were repeated over and over and over again. It was very annoying. I think there was some fundamental truths and meanings in 24 frames that I appreciated, but I wish that more risks would have been taken. The repetition felt less intentional and more like an art student trying to finish a project the night before. This is even less impressive knowing that Kiarostami is a very successful film maker

31. Underworld (2003)

R | 121 min | Action, Fantasy, Thriller

42 Metascore

Selene, a vampire warrior, is entrenched in a conflict between vampires and werewolves, while falling in love with Michael, a human who is sought by werewolves for unknown reasons.

Director: Len Wiseman | Stars: Kate Beckinsale, Scott Speedman, Shane Brolly, Michael Sheen

Votes: 285,236 | Gross: $51.97M

(6.6/10) Finally watched it. Been wanting to since high school. This was kind of a mess, but the story wasn’t bad and a lot of it was pretty. Didn’t like the lycan transformations. Wish there was more variety. I did find it interesting. It’s not as good as Blade, but our protagonist is pretty which adds another layer of interest

32. Little Monsters (2019)

R | 93 min | Comedy, Horror, Sci-Fi

59 Metascore

A washed-up musician teams up with a teacher and a kids'-show personality to protect young children from a sudden outbreak of zombies.

Director: Abe Forsythe | Stars: Lupita Nyong'o, Alexander England, Josh Gad, Kat Stewart

Votes: 19,288

(6.6/10) I have really a mixed opinion of this movie but I really liked the charm and the premise. I would have done many things differently. It’s a very uneven movie. But it does have some good qualities.

33. Hail, Caesar! (2016)

PG-13 | 106 min | Comedy, Drama, Mystery

72 Metascore

A Hollywood fixer in the 1950s works to keep the studio's stars in line.

Directors: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen | Stars: Josh Brolin, George Clooney, Alden Ehrenreich, Ralph Fiennes

Votes: 143,188 | Gross: $30.50M

(9/10) Really funny and ideologically interesting and just good. I really loved all of the characters and almost wished I saw more of them. The bad ratings are weird to me. While I agree that it shouldn’t have been advertised so heavily as “manic”, “wild”, and “crazy” (it was not fast-paced but it also wasn’t very slow-burn) I do think it was really hilarious and silly and intriguing all the way through. Also, it was not satire. This was something else audiences may have anticipated, but it is an earnest movie, not a satirical one

34. The Old Guard (2020)

R | 125 min | Action, Thriller

70 Metascore

A covert team of immortal mercenaries is suddenly exposed and must now fight to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member is discovered.

Director: Gina Prince-Bythewood | Stars: Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari

Votes: 183,763

(9/10) pretty much exactly what I want out of an action movie. Terribly gory, high stakes, badass women, cool aesthetics, and great characters. And plus it’s gay and tender which made me cry tears of joy. I will be disappointed if it gets no sequel.

35. Star Trek: Picard (2020–2023)

TV-MA | 46 min | Action, Adventure, Drama

Follow-up series to Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987) and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) that centers on Jean-Luc Picard in the next chapter of his life.

Stars: Patrick Stewart, Michelle Hurd, Jeri Ryan, Alison Pill

Votes: 94,742

(8.75/10) Picard is a beautiful and compelling piece of art. It is amazing to see an adventure series about a 93 year old man living his life on his terms, and dealing with the mistakes he made in the past with principle and grace.

36. Utopia Falls (2020)

TV-PG | 60 min | Drama, Music, Sci-Fi

(8.5/10) a very conceptually interesting and exciting show! it has clearly been rated by people who have never given it half a chance.

A diverse group of young women navigating their lives through the predominantly male oriented world of skateboarding.

(8.5/10) Betty is a very cute and empowering series about sisterhood with style. Even better than it sounds.

38. Center Jenny (2013 Video)

53 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

The film focuses on the life of Jenny who has, according to many of the other characters, become too "left-of-center" while pursuing her interests.

Director: Ryan Trecartin | Stars: Jillian Alexander, Kupono Aweau, Jeff Baij, Allison Byrnes

Votes: 108

(9/10) this was honestly masterful! I had to watch it for a school project, and was skeptical because my teacher has recommended so inane art stuff in the past, but this was really interesting and disorienting in an amazing way.
