David Thewlis Filmography Project
YOU NEVER IMAGINED COME HERE TO IMDB AND SEE A COMPLETE LIST ABOUT DAVID THEWLIS?. DON’T YOU?.
A short/brief biography about him:
DAVID WHEELER AKA DAVID THEWLIS
Born: 20-Mar-1963
Birthplace: Blackpool, Lancashire, England
Nationality: England
In childhood, David Thewlis was a quiet boy who scribbled poetry into his diary, and as a teen, he played lead guitar with a punk band called Door 66. His first professional work as an actor was in a commercial for Kellogg's Bran Flakes. After several small roles on British television, Thewlis' first leading role was in a starkly political 1987 BBC drama titled Road, about poverty in England under the Thatcher administration. He licked chocolate off Jane Horrocks' naked body in Life is Sweet, and played the vulgar rapist ex-boyfriend in Mike Leigh's Naked. In Besieged he played a reclusive pianist, and in Total Eclipse he played Leonardo DiCaprio's long-term bisexual lover. He also played an earthworm in James and the Giant Peach, a mountain climber who escaped prison in Seven Years in Tibet, and the kindly Professor Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter films.
He wrote, directed, and starred in Cheeky (2003), the bizarrely heartwarming story of a young father who deals with his grief after his wife is killed in a house fire by competing on a game show where contestants insult each other.
His stage name, Thewlis, is his mother's maiden name.

WHY HIM?: GOOD QUESTION. HARD TO ANSWER…
In my 25 short years of existence I have the joy of seeing all kinds of films in terms of countries and languages referred to silent films, blockbuster movies, indie films, arthouse films, animations, low-budget films movies,ect.. and with all that knowledge I've had so far it is obvious that more thoroughly know who are behind them (actors, directors, screenwriters, producers, so many people begin to know I detected quite (a)typical examples of actors that go unnoticed from everybody one of them is called David Thewlis.
If I had to define him in just one word I would say he is a MISFIT, and I do not mean to offend or disrespect him, he is a genial lanky British man who maintained a private life like all of us, he is not interested in being someone ‘’famous’ ’or appear in magazines, or make scandals to draw attention, quite simply does not follow the common canons of what an actor means, That is the reason of my admiration for David, I think I am right (if I'm not mistaken) in saying that he is my favorite actor, it’s always a pleasure see him (either a major role or cameo).
Although I do not know him in person (I’d like to meet him) my perception of him that is a decent, humble and down to earth person with a lot of endowments and this way it is as I do my part, make this humble but significant tribute to David Thewlis and that would be more rewarding to me than he saw for himself what I have written and rejoice to learn that a self-effacing fan dedicates his laborious months just for him :D

Johnny = The Idiosyncratic Character
Pros: Obviously king of the list. Naked is a before and after in David's career, if it wasn't for this film we would never have met him, known him or maybe he wouldn't have become famous. This is not the story of a depressed vagabond, the film is deeper than you can see at first glance. Johnny is a man who runs away from Manchester for having raped a woman, as we get to know him we realize as the truth if he is exposed and naked in all aspects, he takes and fully backs the whole film, of course this is my favorite Mike Leigh film (I have seen others from his filmography but they don't have the same power as Naked) David is an actor with innate talent that I don't need to study at a prestigious drama school to show all his own gifts, on the contrary, he proved himself what he can do, his Cannes award is enough to prove his enormous ability, it seems that this one never cared to be nominated for the Oscars that year (I think he hates The Academy), it's just one more gross award, since Naked is a 100% Anti-Hollywood film, it's too much for the criteria handled by the jury. Johnny is an acid humorist, with an irresponsible personality that is mature but ultimately very cordial, he could use a lot of definitions/words to describe it, but its complexity is far away for a standard actor. David creates a powerful performance like no other!
Cons: For me Naked is impeccable, but if I need to say something against him, I would say: 1) I would have liked to see more scenes in Sandra's apartment between Johnny, Louise, and Sophie, it would be interesting to see their interactions, especially Sophie getting jealous of Louise for Johnny! 2) The first time I saw Naked when you almost get to the end in the Johnny scene and Louise in the bathroom when she asks him to come back to Manchester for a moment I thought I would accept and the two would go together.... but knowing everything that happened before the movie I realized to myself that even though I wanted that I knew it would never happen in the end, a soft side of me makes me feel broken because Johnny/Louise didn't have his happy ending... but my honest side knows that he will never change (because maybe not even the best person will change his mentality or behavior so easily), Naked is a movie with a realistic ending that ends as it begins... depressing and austere.
Curious fact:After years of friendship between David and Mike Leigh and that he participated in the short film The Short & the Curlies and Life is Sweet David himself asked Leigh to make a film especially for him, being the main character himself, and although it took a little time to fulfill that promise the result was undoubtedly the greatest success in David's career.
My personal definition of Johnny's behavior:
This is my own thought, but for me he is a person who has experienced things that have affected mentally and emotionally, Johnny is not the smartest guy but he learns only to survive in a big world because it shows that he has been reflecting bad experiences in life, he gets to a point where he doesn't care if he does wrong and improper actions on other people. his sexual morbidity is, in my opinion, a way in which he wants to avoid what lives/occurs in his day today, and for me Johnny is a human who is afraid and centrally mistrusts a lot of other humans, he knows that the world is impure and with the passage of time all people are more tainted and corrupt that is why he lives without thinking about tomorrow, maybe he is sadistic but for me he needs to be eviler because the same life I teach him to have to be and he is not the worst person in the whole world.
Jason Kinsky = The Idyllic Character
Pros: Definitely the most underrated movie where David appears, a hidden jewel that is sadly forgotten by many people, he and Thandie Newton make a great combo that really works for me, the themes of interracial romances are unique in the cinema, Jason Kinsky is an English man who by widowing his wife inherits a house in Italy, little by little we will realize that his personality is emotional and fragile (much more than Shandurai). I also like the fact that both characters suffer internal problems and both feel alone as well as empty... it makes me feel empathy for them, the first time I saw the film I felt really sad for Shandurai, but then I realized that the purest and most innocent character of the whole film is him, no doubt Mr. Kinsky loses much more than she does because he does everything possible to make her happy.... It doesn't matter how many sacrifices it will cost to make her wish come true. An idyllic and romantic film with artistic quality.
Cons: I'm always bothered by the end of the film, I'm upset to see what happened after Shandurai's husband rang the doorbell, but when the final.... urhhgg credits appear! It's an open ending and maybe some people will find it very puzzling.
Curious fact: Several gossips on the Internet say that there is a 60-minute version of the film with the same cast, but in the end, Bernardo Bertolucci thought about it and decided to extend it, to finally do it again with the duration we all know of 93 minutes. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas
Ralf (The Father) = The Amoral Character
Pros: Although many of those who have seen the film say that it is very sad and takes even a drop of tears out of you, actually for me it was more of a spooky experience to know that the story is very realistic, the end is undoubtedly crude and explicit, but I like it because it is real and honest. Ralf is a Nazi sergeant who has been given in his possession one of the many Jewish concentration camps that were installed in the Second World War, a cold man who has no feelings (only when it suits him), his presence implies total respect (sometimes fear makes you feel obedience from another person), the first scene in which he appears (in the living room) is a clear example, is a wolf with sheepskin, does not feel empathy for anyone, but who in this film is not like him?, maybe Bruno... I would very easily describe Ralf as the villain of the film but I think that's not the real message that the book and/or film really wants to show after all but to show the double amorality that exists in the world and the actions that may or may not have repercussions, but perhaps, in the end, he paid dearly for his actions. The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is surprisingly one of those films that become very faithful to the book and also the film is easy to watch without getting bored.
Cons: You would ask for the impossible, but I would have liked to see scenes in which David and Vera Farmiga interact more although it would be difficult to happen because as I said earlier he is cold and the wife for his part is very conservative ....... And why not: To have seen him live happily with his two sons Bruno and Gretel.
Curious fact: At the end of the book are mentioned more things that help to complement the story a little more, such as mentioning that a year later the mother and her sister Gretel return to Berlin without knowing what had happened to Bruno and how the father stays in the concentration camp to be killed later by the Nazi soldiers themselves. - RegistaEmily YoungStelleSarah Michelle GellarJonathan TuckerErika ChristensenAfter a frantic suicide attempt, Veronika awakens inside a mysterious mental asylum. Under the supervision of an unorthodox psychiatrist who specializes in controversial treatment, Veronika learns that she has only weeks to live.#4 Veronika Decides to Die
Dr. Alex Blake = The Analgesic Character
Pros: Before watching this movie I had some fears because I perceived a bad thought that only David would appear with only a small role, but to my surprise, it's a good secondary! Veronika Decides to Die is certainly a film that you won't love fervently but you won't hate, Dr. Blake runs a hospital for people with mental disorders, the kind of person you'd like to talk to or who you'd like to spend all your time with, I like his way of being so peaceful and intellectual, the moments between Dr. Blake and his family, the moments between Dr. Blake and his family, and the moments between Dr. Blake and his family. Blake and Veronika really make you think about your own life too and the fact that I have also read Paolo Cohello's book helped me to understand it better (this is a story of personal growth that is really worth reading), a very different tape than we may not be used to seeing these days or today in the cinema, but anyway this film is far below the radar.
Cons: In the end, the film becomes a kind of light romantic film almost like a bad Saturday popcorn movie, the principle promised something more sober or meaningful...... but, well, it's even a nice ending that gives you some encouragement.
Curious fact: In the book, the name of David's character is Dr. Igor and in the story appears a daughter of him who is also called Veronika, just like the main character. - RegistaDavid CaffreyStelleDavid ThewlisRachel GriffithsAdam BlackBlack romantic comedy set around the troubled "peace process" and its effect on a cynical Belfast hack.#5 Divorcing Jack
Dan Starkey = The Eloquent Character
Pros: Maybe the big reason I love this film is that Dan Starkey reminds me a lot of Johnny in Naked, a less depressing and more comical version, it's perhaps the only time David tries to reinterpret some of his characters. A movie with some great hidden tricks... everything in it is a joke of black humor, the beginning of the film shows strength, you really want to see more, Dan works as a reporter and writer for a newspaper, and by chance of life he gets into a bigger weight mess without wanting it, becoming the most sought after by everyone, if he is a person who takes everything from life in a fun way.
Cons: But I must admit....After Dan runs away from the police and the gangs, the movies become serious in a tasteless way and feel very slow, the vibration of joy feels increasingly empty, the balance between humorous and dramatic moments is lost in many ways, Jason Isaacs character goes very unnoticed, doesn't have a big impact on me; he's a standard villain, neither so evil nor so dumb. I understand that British humor is not the same as that of the United States or other countries and maybe that's why I don't get to enjoy it in all its splendor, but anyway, the film deserves to be seen if you are a comedy lover and want to see something different.
Curious fact: Dan Starkey's role was originally offered to Robert Carlyle, but in the end, he turned it down and that's how David took his role. - RegistaPaul AusterStelleDavid ThewlisIrène JacobMichael ImperioliEsplora l'arte della scrittura oscura e comica di Martin Frost.#6 The Inner Life of Martin Frost
Martin Frost = The Introspective Character
Pros: David is Martin, a famous writer who without any inspiration goes a weekend to a country house to refresh his ideas to write again, being there he will live a very special situation, which can be just his own imagination... a rather indie/experimental film, so if you want to see it don't expect something so easy. Irene Jacob is a beautiful actress, she does a very good job, she and David have great scenes, like when he tries to return to New York and the tire breaks down, I felt empty and melancholy to see poor Martin go for a new tire and she leaves him desperately, like the fantasy scenes when Martin dreams of talking to Claire separated by the door are for me undoubtedly the most interesting moments of the whole film.
Cons: Only one thing...... Michael Imperioli! When he appears, the film goes down. I'm sorry but he kills me all the romance and fantasy that the film had, Jim Fortunato is annoying! this character is the typical male stereotype of the Italian-American neighbor, the dialogues between him and Martin are boring they seem to be written spontaneously and improvised, if his character had never appeared the film has been much better, the end of the film is good and catches my attention, but instinct again, this ends very abruptly.
Curious fact: David agrees to participate in this film because that same year he published his first and only book (so far) called The Late Hector Kipling taking advantage of the media as advertising in order to give it to notice. - RegistaPaul McGuiganStelleMalcolm McDowellDavid ThewlisPaul BettanyCronaca dell'ascesa e del declino di un noto gangster inglese particolarmente spietato.#7 Gangster No. 1
Freddie Mays = The Rowdy Character
Pros: David along with Malcolm McDowell and Paul Bettany make a good contrast between them and help the film gain strength, the story is very dirty and euphoric. Freddy is a gangster of great power and influence, a guy that when you see him you believe in everything he says and does, his character is very credible. David has a great role in the story for me, this brings a breath of fresh air at that time (the year 2000) because until that time we hadn't seen a David playing roles like that in the '90s and that's why he's in my Top 10.
Cons: After half of the film Paul Bettany becomes nauseating to see as I like, I get tired and annoyed. I hate the moment when Freddy arrives in jail and doesn't appear until almost the end of the film, the fact that Gangster 55 was the only character who grew old in the film makes me laugh! the other characters are the same actors but with cheap makeup... Saffron Burrows and David don't fit in or are not entirely credible as a couple as they both seem very forced and uncomfortable.
Curious fact: David has said on several occasions that he is a lover of Crime/Mob/Gangster genre movies and that I always want to play this kind of bad guys.
King Einon = The Conceited Character
Pros: If any of you who are taking the time to read this and are a fan or beginner in David's filmography or want to get to know him, it is imperative as well as almost mandatory to see this film, David steals all the scenes in which he appears, it is fun with and without intention, I remember the first time I saw the film I thought ''why someone like him appears in these films so dull'', David collides with all the cast, well, except with Julie Christie. King Einon comes to the throne after a fight where his father dies just waiting to get his place at anything without telling that accidentally he would also die and a dragon would save his life, his way of being is brazen, conceited and perhaps precocious. The fact that he is named after the film because he has half the heart of Draco (Sean Connery) is a nice gesture towards him.
Cons: It's a Rob Coen movie so you can't ask for much (his other movies are more horrible, believe me); it's a very Hollywood/blockbuster movie too. I would have liked the story between Einon and Bowen to be more developed (because it only gives us a small glimpse of what will happen throughout the film would have been more epic, the beginning of the film catches our attention but then the story revolves around the origin and history of Draco, and the other plots that had been woven from the beginning disappear, it seems that Rob wanted to give more prominence to FX and the end of the film becomes very fast, it seems that he already wanted to finish it as fast as possible.
Curious fact: Rob Coen mentioned that Naked is one of his favorite movies of all times and for this reason he contacted David to be part of his film.
Mickey Finn = The Unhinged Character
Pros: I love this kind of stories because they are insane! a great adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's story and I also liked the fact that Brad Anderson was its director because he is very bold and not afraid to make dark stories or show intense scenes, the cast is good and lend themselves to everything. Mickey Finn is a madman, naughty and boisterous, a kind of perfect/guard in a psychiatric asylum. David perhaps shows his ugliest side ever seen in a movie, the scene of the New Year's Eve party with him and Millie is quite disturbing ... sounds strange but I must admit that the first time I saw I was shocked because seeing it itself is quite disturbing, no doubt this is another role where David dares to interpret something beyond every day by him.
Cons: I would have liked David to do more evil with all the other characters, hate the fact that he was the only character to die and be seen in the eyes of others as the only villain (?) which is not true because for me all the characters are crazy and imperfect, especially Ben Kingsley can not stand to see that he did not deserve an adequate punishment, the FX / CGI used throughout the film are bad and I think that is unforgivable, because it really did not require so many and at first glance look a little cheap.
Curious Fact: The producers Icon and Sobini Films have some contacts with the talent agency in which David is affiliated, that's why he participated in the cast of this film.
Kevin Deakin = The Straight Up Character
Pros: He's David's first character and he's pretty solid, he looks like a common guy, is the kind of person you easily identify with, and at least I feel identified with his behavior and/or feelings, since some scenes between him and his girlfriend are the best examples of that, despite not being a big fan of military/army issues in the movies, this one is very easy to watch without not being so boring, a solid film in general. Here he personifies Kevin, a boy who returns after everyone had believed him dead in the war of the Malvinas, but when he returns he realizes that his life is no longer the same, it is very empty, more than he imagined as if he had really died...
Cons: As I said before, Kevin is a very conventional character like all this movie, Kevin is not a bad guy, good, boring, shy or nerd, he is a simple individual like a normal person in real life and it is more than obvious that here David does not show all his skills and potential actors, however, the film itself does not seem to demand much, the script and the direction of it could have been more solid. Although the ending seeks to expose a message does not have enough drama to generate a great impact or enhancement.
Curious fact: Just as this was David's first film as the main character, it was also Paul Greengrass's debut as a director, which years later would be consolidated with other films such as United 93 or The Bourne Ultimatum.
Paul Verlaine = The Frustrated Character
Pros: First of all, I want to mention that although this film deals with a somewhat morbid topic at no time does the film fall into a banal theme, Agnieszka Holland is a director who has made charming films and takes things seriously, the story is well maintained and offers a homosexual theme in the best possible way, David is Verlaine a bisexual poet who falls in love with another poet younger than the so-called Rimbaud (Di Caprio), we are told the stormy life he has following this event. There are some really beautiful footage filmed and so well done by her that it feels taken care of (such as shots, locations, photography), for example when Paul goes to jail, the truth in the way he narrates this fact and captures it so well that he really looks sad to look at; all these moments are not impossible to appreciate and the end of the film is so artistic, that I leave myself to meditate for several days on it, David creates a great character! A really solid one.
Cons: It will be hard to talk about negative things, so... here we go: Honestly I'm not a big fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, I respect him as an actor but as a person... not so much, seeing Arthur Rimbaud and his behavior in the film is sometimes annoying, during all the time I saw this film I think in my head: Why does Paul Verlaine have a certain mania for this guy?..., I feel that the script is a little disorienting in some respects because almost after the first 60 minutes it becomes tense to look and appreciate. Seeing both of them (David and Leonardo) for a long time tires me a little and I feel them too monotonous.
Curious fact: David shaved part of his head especially for the film to make it look like the real Verlaine. - RegistaPaul ChartStelleAmanda PlummerRobert ForsterDavid ThewlisSandra meets a shrink on the way to picking up her sister at a desert town to continue to their mom. He decides by flipping a coin. The coin flipping gets psycho.#12 American Perfekt
Ernest Santini = The Wasted Character
Pros: A strange story, unusual, with a great scoop that despite not being the most original story (very Hitchcocknian), has great moments of suspense, depressing and sadness that are very well thought out, really make you think in many ways about what happens in the same, David and Amanda Plummer are the best part of the film, both Characters (Santini and Sandra) have a great complexity and nuances that only both can create and I must say they did an excellent job. Santini's character is a very picturesque magician who, without having to or fearing it, crosses the path of two people who will damage his existence.
Cons: Unfortunately when Santini and Sandra die the film begins to decline, all fascination begins to fade, Robert Forster and Fairuza Balk end the film together, if this had not happened I think American Perfekt would be a much better film and very possibly could have entered my Top 10! What a pity.
Curious fact: Fairuza Balk is precisely the person who intervened to speak with the director Paul Chart to help David to be part of the cast since both were couple during the years from 1995 to 1998. - RegistaDavid ThewlisStelleDavid ThewlisLisa GormanSean WardConsumed with sadness after the death of his wife and subsequent rejection from his son, a widower, at the urging of his friends, opts to appear on a vulgar, wildly popular game show (for which his wife signed him up) and watches his life start to change for the better.#13 Cheeky
Harry Sankey = The Tragicomic Character
Pros: David's first (and only) film as he writes and directs shows that he has a lot of talent, a real-life story in which we know more about David's personality, embodying Harry, a man who from living a rose-colored life becomes in the blink of an eye a disgrace when his wife dies and this one knowing that his desire was that he appears in a TV contest called precisely Cheeky will make this live situation of the most tragicomic. It is obvious that David made such a film because he has a great appreciation for comedies and black acid humor movies, which I use to emphasize this film. It has a cozy and loving cast: Lesly Sharp (yes, nice reference to Naked) and Eddie Marsan. Perhaps it would be a film that I would advise to see only if you are a fan of him, but Cheeky deserves more attention, a hidden jewel without a doubt.
Cons: Just one, but I think it's a big one, the problem with the whole film is that at any moment it tends to be more comedy or more drama and it's not completely defined at all, and in the end it's neither one nor the other, David tries to make a mixture of the two and finally the film is not as substantial as it could be, in my opinion, I feel that he wanted to make a very careful story and not touch on something insolent because the clear examples of this are several moments of the film such as the plot of the TV show and the creation of the character Trudie Styler, both are great ideas that he embodied in the film but do not fit very well in the script....it could have been something more solid.
Curious fact: Famous names like Luc Besson and Trudie Styler (Sting's wife) support financially to make Cheeky possible, and for this reason, some rumors say that Trudie and David end up having a dispute at the end for the rights and credits of the film, which apparently ended up fighting. - StelleMark ChapmanAlfred MolinaJulie WaltersAnthology of unconnected movies of different genres.#14 Filipina Dreamgirls
Tim Shanks = The Breezy Character
Pros: Don't make fun of me, but this BBC film is really interesting, this is not the typical theme that is shown daily in a normal film, I'm not so immersed in this theme, but I still think it's very curious to see a film being made about taboos in the Philippines, knowing that British men have a great desire to seek luck in this country makes me feel funny to see it myself, because all the characters that appear are very nice. David plays Tim, a young man who works in a construction company, of immature thought who doesn't really know who he wants in his life but who in any case launches with 3 other men to travel to the Philippines to find true love, a very human character where David shows a playful side and self-bleak.
Cons: Like most of these Screen One movies, they are not as elaborate compared to a standard movie, made for DVD or for the cinema, although I would like you can not ask more to this movie. It's not a catchy enough movie to become one of your favorites whether you're a fan of David or not.
Curious Fact: It's thanks to producer Kenith Trodd who gave David the opportunity to be part of this BBC Screen One. The Island of Dr. Moreau
Edward Douglas = The Hidden (Protagonist) Character
Pros: It's not a film as bad as many critics said at the time, maybe the big reason I like it is because it was one of the first films I saw of David, it's a shame that Edward Douglas is the real protagonist of this story, because he was the only survivor who was shipwrecked on a small fleet and who arrives on the mysterious island of Dr. Moreau. Throughout the film Edward plays a voyeuristic role and like him we all become spectators and see all the spooky events that happen during the island, the FX's and makeup are great, a good mixture of suspense and horror/survival in this remake, the fact that Edward is the only character that stays alive in the end made me happy!
Cons: Obviously a movie of this type will always leave a lot to be desired, it is somewhat uncomfortable that Val Kilmer and Marlon Brando are just the biggest names trying to sell this film believing that it will not be disgusting because their characters are very stereotyped! But this is a film made in Hollywood, so... I'm not surprised.
Curious fact: David said in several interviews that this film brought him a lot of bad luck such as an accident during the shooting, fell off a horse and broke a leg as well as problems in the locations, in the end, David did not attend the premiere in the United States. - RegistaBernard RoseStelleRhys IfansChloë SevignyDavid ThewlisLa storia della vita di Howard Marks, un trafficante di droga britannico.#16 Mr. Nice
Jim McCann = The Trashy Character
Pros: You want me to tell you the truth? David's character is the only thing really worth seeing in this movie because it shows how sometimes a brilliant supporting character can entertain an entire movie, Jim is super hilarious! is Howard's friend (Ifans) a man who has made everything and great influence, David gives us all a lesson in how you can make an interpretation without the need for many resources. On the other hand, I also want to highlight Chloë Sevigny because I love to see her in every film in which she appears, Chloë is so adorable and charming, she also somehow keeps you from watching this film.
Cons: Do you want to read another truth? I'm pretty sure Rhys Ifans doesn't yet have enough experience to put all the weight of the story on her shoulders, her character is so insipid. The film takes a long time to start and therefore becomes slow and soft, Jim McCann was so good secondary that he should have appeared more and had a secondary story of his own, which is difficult because the script lacks consistency and better fluidity.

Michael Aris = The Support Character
Pros: A film that flows so easily that it never becomes complicated or difficult to watch. Luc Besson is a director who always strives to give a good direction regardless of the genre and whether he wrote the script or not. The Lady manages to give us a story with a beautiful message of humanity without becoming something pretentious, in the David plays Aris, an expert on Tibetan issues married to the famous activist named Aung San Suu Kyi (Michelle Yeoh) who fought for her people as well as her roots. I want to mention David's double performance, I felt a nice gesture as it reminded me a lot of the BBC television series called The Street where I also played twins.
Cons: The last thirty minutes of the film are very badly structured; they don't make you feel as empathetic with the main character as you should. I actually think that if someone approached you and told you the ending you would understand much more what is happening than if you saw it for yourself, this happens in many films about biographical lives, tend to be a success or a failure and are not always fascinating as you think.
Curious fact: David agrees to participate in this film because he owed Luc Besson a personal favor; Besson supported him financially so that he could release his film Cheeky. - StelleJohn KavanaghTony DoyleSean CaffreyAn anthology drama series.#18 Journey to Knock
Terry = The Seeking Attention Character
Pros: Another BBC film with its British style and signature, dealing with the subject of disability as a surprise factor, but nevertheless, this is handled in a common way without becoming a boring cliché until the film becomes a kind of Road movie. Here we see David as the protagonist of this story, playing Terry, a man disappointed with a depression for not having full meaning to all things that happen in life because of being paraplegic, yet he does everything possible because everyone listens to him regardless of his condition, and seriously, I'm not kidding when I say that David steals every scene/moment that appears. At times the film gives messages with a tone of black humor about inclusion and how we shouldn't do less to these people. John Hurt is good as a secondary and I highlight him as a supporting cast because he keeps his distance all the time and doesn't obscure the story at any time, which I appreciate.
Cons: I would lie to you if I told you that this film doesn't have some flaws, of course, it does, but... Nah.... I forgive this one for this occasion...
Curious fact: This information is not currently about David himself, but about the film itself, some time ago some rumors on the web said that this film was released in VSH and DVD format but only in the United Kingdom, apparently now the DVD that was released is discontinued in that country, the copy I have of this film is a clone disc in DVD-R format that was recorded on a TV, this film I bought years ago on eBay UK, because today is very difficult to find a legitimate copy of Journey To Knock, no doubt this was the most difficult film of David Thewlis to find.
Jerry Barker = The Noble Character
Pros: It really is worth waiting a long time (almost an hour) to see and meet Jerry Barker, a family man who meets this black horse and helps him in his work as a taxi driver, this is perhaps the humblest character that David has played throughout his career, it is impossible that anyone who sees this film is not captivated by the scenes in which he appears: like when Jerry and black beauty are outside waiting in the snow for the two men and this was the cause of Jerry getting sick and in the end when he leaves black beauty in the stable and they both look at each other is without a doubt the most nostalgic moment of the whole movie.
Cons: I wish Jerry was left with black beauty more than Joe, it's more than obvious to say that I would have liked to see more of David's character in the film, but anyway, this is about the life of a horse....
Curious fact: David has confessed on numerous occasions that all the horses that were used throughout the film hated him for some strange reason and the horse that was used to play black beauty was no exception. Seven Years in Tibet

Peter Aufschnaiter = The Zen Character
Pros: This film tells the life of two Austrian mountaineers who in the middle of World War II are involved in a story that will affect their lives forever. I could write many positive things like saying that the film has a beautiful direction, a good editing, a good story, landscapes and perfect places to show .... but I want to mention something that perhaps many users or critics never got to say when they talked about this film and is that if we analyze very deeply the real message that the film tries to make us see is that we must seek inner peace and Peter is the only one of the two that really gets it and not Heinrich. Peter finds happiness in what he has at his fingertips and his own existence is not complicated by materialistic and banal things that ultimately leave him nothing.
Cons: Instead, Heinrich, who lives depressed by the internal remorse of his past over the years, doesn't really become a good guy at all...he's quite materialistic, he also treats his wife badly and in a way gives us a glimpse that he was a Nazi (mmm I think so). In my opinion, the fact that Heinrich has committed himself more to life in Tibet than Peter doesn't change his way of being or remotely, but unfortunately, this film smells very Hollywood and Brad Pitt represents that commercial side that this film has in some aspects? At the end of the film this one tries to justify his actions by wanting to go back to look for his son, but well, I think it's a serious mistake to make us believe that he's going to change and that in the end he just goes back to Austria to become a ''free spirit''. The friendship that is created between Peter and Heinrich sometimes leaves me with a feeling of coldness, only the two have a mutual affection for the many years that survived all these vicissitudes together. The secondary plot that appears of the Dalai Lama was sometimes monotonous to see in the film, but an objective justifies the means, doesn't it?

Leslie Payne = The Accompanying Character
Pros: An entertaining and easy to watch the film without complications that despite not reinventing or doing anything new in the British Crime/Mob genre is made for you to keep watching, here David gives life to Leslie a bully related to organized crime in the 1960s. Tom Hardy's double character is perhaps the most interesting surprise in the whole story, I thought that seeing him in a double role would be boring but in the end, it wasn't! Once again David becomes a character that only serves to accompany or support the protagonist of the story that in this case is Hardy; it is a solid film after all and nothing more, if you like Gangster No. 1 this film will not disappoint you, but in turn, are not good if we compare them.
Cons: It's unfortunate that in 2015 a director or scriptwriter can't make a more original film or story and use ideas or clichés so common in many others because the film has so many of them. The last part is boring and poorly done and does not give you interest or follow up on what happens at the end. Seeing Chazzz Palminteri and David in the same scene reminds me how much they are aging now :(

Ringe = The Friendly Character
Pros: A rare mix is what you find here, it's a low-income home movie, it's a road movie, it's a very British film, it has an 80's aura and a peculiar thing: a curious dumbbell between David and Clive Owen before becoming "The Clive Owen", simply Ringe is the typical character who is the friend of the protagonist and who accompanies him on his adventures... and nothing else (this is his first film just like David); a film easy to digest. There are good scenes that follow a good rhythm throughout the film to get to the end.
Cons: The most obvious thing you notice in Vroom is that it has many deficiencies and irregularities like having a very linear script, a cheap soundtrack, and almost no complexity, the ending is so spooky (I mean in a bizarre sense), maybe Jake committed suicide! WTF? (the film gives a glimpse of that). If you're a David fan (like me), Clive will give you retro nostalgia. If you're looking for weirdness in the cinema or just try to watch a movie out of laziness....you're welcome! if not avoid it at all costs! Vroom is not solid enough to be to my liking.

Detective Superintendent Roy Washburn = The Integral Character
Pros: We're not dealing with the worst erotic film ever made (that's what I think). If we leave all the prejudices and give it a chance, we find a decent Erotica/Thriller movie as well as sex scenes without falling into vulgarity or insolence. I want to mention something curious about this sequel: Roy Washburn is probably the cleanest and most impartial person to appear in this story because he tries to do the right thing more than Dr. Michael (David Morrissey) who unfortunately gets involved with Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone) a woman accused of several years ago of murder, his character is seen as the typical bad cop and he is not given as much importance as he should and he comes out superfluous. At the end of the day, the film is just fun...
Cons: It is impossible to remove the bad fame of this film, has several weak points such as the anticlimactic end, Sharon Stone believes he can sell us back his role as Catherine Tramell, forgot that this film is no longer directed by Paul Verhoeven (here you need the personal touch that he had with the first part and that Michael Caton-Jones does not achieve), but undoubtedly the most distressing thing about watching this film is to see David uncomfortable, as for example, at the beginning of the film, when Roy appears at the police station questioning Catalina, his gaze and his face seem the most forced and without sense of humor to be there almost as if he thought, what am I doing here?. No wonder he agreed to appear in this film just to make money, and he was nominated for a Razzi for this film along with the infamous remake of The Omen.
Curious fact: Two years after the release of the film, David declared: "It was a pile of shit* wasn't it? I wanted to get a job in any film before my daughter was born. It was actually very nice to me. I didn't have much to do with Sharon Stone. Sergeant Major Bradley = The Deranged Character
Pros: I want to clarify that I saw this film without having seen its first part Hope and Glory, I think that if you have not seen the first part will not affect that you look at this. In this sequel to the 1987 film, we meet the torturer Sergeant Bradley who is in charge of having under his control a young army of English soldiers during the Korean War in 1952. More than anything there are three things I want to distinguish from this sequel: 1) All the moments in the military camp are nice and fluid (being honest I was looking forward to seeing more events in there) 2) Richard E. Grant always makes great supporting characters in every film that appears and he is a reason for me to keep watching it. 3) Sergeant Bradley is the most distinctive character in the entire film and brings great dynamism to the story.
Cons: What I liked the least was precisely the opposite. When Bill returns home the film feels completely disinterested to my liking, the love story (?) between Bill and Ophelia doesn't stand out at all, it doesn't add anything motivating to the film, to be frank about having to watch the ending of David's poor character in bed really makes me feel sorry for myself. I find the treatment given to the character unfair, but what are we going to do?

Joby = The Indoctrinated Character
Pros: I admit it. I'm a big fan of Terry Gilliam, he's a unique director. Brazil is perhaps one of my favorite films of all time. The concepts he uses throughout the film are quite surprising, he knows how to create a good quirky dystopia, he knows how to get my attention. Despite not being something new and innovative in 2013 this is really interesting and worth seeing at least once, David plays Joby, who works in a corporation in charge of controlling the whole society that exists (in the film) as every good character Orwellian this accepts the rules of living in that world and does not judge it.
Cons: Unfortunately this film is not a masterpiece and it is impossible not to compare it with Brazil, in that sense it disappoints me and leaves me with a bittersweet taste, David's character is funny but sometimes it seems that Gilliam himself uses it so that all of us remember or think we are seeing Michael Palin or John Cleese, and in the end Joby becomes a very wasted character. With the passage of time, Christoph Waltz becomes bored and insipid to see (and in a way also the whole film) his character does not add anything special to this story, the end of it is very heavy and we do not appreciate the message that wants to capture us completely.
Curious fact: Terry Gilliam stated in some television interviews that David took about a week to film all his scenes.
