Farr was born in New York City to a family with mixed Irish and Italian ancestry. She studied drama at New York's Stony Brook University and Loughborough University in Leicestershire, earning a joint bachelor of arts from the two universities. Isla Lang Fisher was born on February 3, 1976 in Muscat, Oman, to Scottish parents Elspeth Reid and Brian Fisher, who worked as a banker for the U.N.
