- DirectorJeffrey LynchStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightAfter Mr. Burns steals oil from Springfield Elementary and blocks out the sun, an unknown person shoots him. This two-part special of The Simpsons must be one of the greatest crime stories ever. We all played the role of the detective and no one could guess the answer even if the clues are there. One of the most intriguing and suspenseful episodes of the show, with Mr. Burns reaching his peak as the antagonist of the series and the entire cast in top form.
*Includes "Who Shot Mr. Burns? (Part Two)".
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorMike B. AndersonStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightThe Simpsons are proud to be the most festively decorated house on the block. But when Lisa is traumatized at Krustyland Horror Night, she feels she cannot handle Halloween anymore. The Simpsons needed 27 years to make a canon Halloween episode, but the waiting was worth it. This is genuinely frightening and intense, even more than each Treehouse of Horror where rules don't matter. It's a truly unique episode and irrefutable evidence that modern Simpson can be outstanding as well, achieving a perfect balance between humor and terror.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorDavid SilvermanStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightAfter faking his own death, Homer is reunited with his mother, who harbors a deep secret.Few moments in fiction break my heart so bad like the image of Homer looking at the stars after his mother has to leave him. I sob every time I watch it, and I don't feel ashamed for that. A desolating ending preceded by one of the most beautiful stories in Homer's life and a warm meeting between a lovely mother and her son after years of remoteness. It's so sweet.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorSteven Dean MooreStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightSpecial Agents Mulder and Scully arrive in Springfield after Homer claims to have seen an alien. You could imagine how outstanding this episode is when someone who doesn't care at all about The X-Files settle this parody/homage at his TOP4 of the entire show. This is a groundbreaking episode both for The Simpsons and for movies and series about aliens. It's one of the craziest episodes of the show and one of the most hilarious things of this genre as well
Rating: 5.0/5 - 1989– 30mTV-14TV Episode8.2 (2.5K)DirectorsChuck SheetzMark KirklandStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightHomer goes to Dr. Frink to help him recover his memories from the night before, and he discovers, based on his interpretation of the memories, that Marge is having an affair.Homer Simpson is one of the most beloved characters of television, surely the most iconic of animation. This episode is a beautiful homage to him, reliving the most transcendental moments of his life with new content and callbacks while trying to figure out a mystery. The montage of "one picture a day" stands as one of the greatest moments of the show.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorsMike B. AndersonRob OliverStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightThirty years in the future the Simpsons get together for Christmas. Bart and Lisa are struggling as parents to connect with their children. The Simpsons must last forever. But if it had to end, I wish it could have been with this flash-forward. This includes as many secondary characters as it can and assigns all of them a creative destiny, contains some elaborated generic jokes about the future, and give all members of the family what would have been a proper send-off. It would have been a perfect series finale.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorWesley ArcherStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightA family vacation to Itchy & Scratchy Land turns disastrous when the robots malfunction and turn on the tourists. The misadventures of The Simpsons in the happiest place on Earth are all fascinating. This one is still the most striking experience of the family together, facing the most absurd dangers and enjoying the most mind-boggling activities most irresponsibly. Some running-gags are excellent, the atmosphere is ridiculous, and the characters are all hilarious.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorJim ReardonStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightThe family's job at Mr. Burns' country estate goes awry when Homer goes mad; Homer's attempt to repair a toaster results in inadvertent time travel; The school staff turn cannibalistic. This is the greatest episode of this glorious tradition. Hilarious, terrifying, and beautifully animated from start to finish. The Shinning is a magnificent parody to the classic film, Time and Punishment is easily my favorite segment of the entire series, and Nightmare Cafeteria is a spine-chilling segment. All of them are TOP-10 material, which says everything by itself.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorJim ReardonStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightA series of vignettes showcasing a day in the life of various Springfield residents. The Simpsons have a huge and impressive cast, and this episode profited this. Basically, it tells many short tales about main, secondary, and overlooked characters in a very fashioned way, including a parody of Pulp Fiction, Nick Riviera attending Grampa, a tall man talking revenge on Nelson, and, of course, the universally acclaimed scene of the Steamed Hams. It's amazing.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorRich MooreStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightAfter being released from prison on parole, Sideshow Bob plots to murder Bart.Kelsey Grammer's brilliant character Sideshow Bob was a guarantee of high-quality back in the earliest years of the show, but the best among them was, is, and will always be this one. It's the most hilarious episode of the show, I daresay, an incredible gag-fest that will make you laugh hysterically for twenty-two minutes. Not in vain it's generally chosen as the best of all time.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorsDavid SilvermanRaymond S. PersiStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightIn this story within a story within a story within a story, a cave-exploring expedition, an angry sheep and a lovestruck Moe become inextricably entwined. This might be the quaintest episode ever. Lisa tells various stories intrinsically related to the next one in a series of mind-blowing, emotive, wacky, or hilarious events that somehow add up at the end, even taking time to share the backstories of Edna and Snake and to develop some of the villains of Springfield. This one was a never-ending source of creativeness.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorJim ReardonStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightHomer and his co-workers qualify for the plant softball team's league final, but Mr. Burns hires nine professional MLB players in order to win a $1 million bet.Sports-themed episodes are recurrent in The Simpsons, just like guest stars giving voices to themselves. The best example of both situations can be found early in this extremely hilarious and crazy journey where professional baseball players fall into the most absurd inconveniences, allowing Homer to be the hero of the Nuclear Plant. It's the first gag-fest of the show.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorsJim ReardonLauren MacMullanStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightAfter saving Maggie's life, Moe develops a special bond with her, much to Homer's dismay. The relationship between a repugnant bartender and an adorable baby must be the most beautiful out there. They complement perfectly each other and make this one of the most precious ever made. And just in case Moe and Maggie were not enough, Fat Tony has a prominent role as well. Written by J. Stewart Burns, directed by Laureen MacMullan. Enough to say.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorRich MooreStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightAfter having a horrible day, Bart gets a job tending bar for a group of gangsters and becomes the prime suspect when Principal Skinner mysteriously disappears. This sinister episode introduces Fat Tony and some other members of the matchless Mafia of Springfield, arguably the most valuable and profitable acquisition of the show after its introductory first season. This is consistently hilarious and terribly intense, where some of my favorites characters – Bart, Homer, Wiggum, Skinner, Hutz, Tony – steal the show.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorJim ReardonStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightAfter eating insanity peppers at a chili cook-off, Homer has a hallucination of a talking coyote urging him to find his soulmate.Marriage crises are depreciated by the fans these days, but this one is different and more special than everything else. This one puts the focus on the hallucinations of Homer after eating chili and his intense search for a soulmate, becoming the most surreal episode of the series and the most stunningly animated courtesy of Jim Reardon.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorsMike B. AndersonRob OliverStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightA tale of Bart's journey from youth to adulthood, where he is constantly in search of approval from his father and in the shadow of his more-successful younger sister. This parody of Boyhood is easily among the most emotional episodes this show has produced. It's hands down the best examination of the character of Bart. His relationships with Lisa, with Grampa, with Homer, with Milhouse. As a lame kid, as a trouble-maker teen, as a successful adult. It's a beautiful and detailed recap of the entire life of Bart Simpson in 22 minutes.
Rating: 5.0/5 - 1989– 30mTV-PGTV Episode9.0 (5.4K)DirectorJim ReardonStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightHomer must travel to New York to get his car back, which is illegally parked at World Trade Center Plaza. This one is an obvious nominee for the award of the funniest episode ever. The antics of Homer in New York are absolutely and constantly hilarious, and each one of his disgraces lets me laughing off-the-chair. Besides, I think it is my Dad's favorite so I obviously have a soft spot for it. I don't know what New Yorkers think about it, but I know it's deservedly beloved across the world.
Rating: 5.0/5 - 1989– 23mTV-PGTV Episode8.8 (5.7K)DirectorWesley ArcherStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightAfter apparently consuming poison blowfish, Homer is told that he only has 24 hours to live.I can not think of a harder episode to watch than this one. Homer is head-to-head with death and has 22 hours to enjoy before saying goodbye. Each little moment he shares with the kids and Grampa is a stab in the back, each talk with Marge is desolating, each minute wasted is maddening. Despite the happy ending, it's the saddest episode as a whole.
Rating: 5.0/5 - 1989– 30mTV-14TV Episode7.6 (1.7K)DirectorsMike B. AndersonChris ClementsStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightBart gets the family to take the cruise vacation of his dreams, and then launches a fiendish plot to ensure that it goes on forever. There is certainly a valuable life lesson here: enjoy every little moment of your life. It is one of the most memorable trips of The Simpsons, with a truly outrageous but well-intentioned mischief of Bart, a special visit to the Antarctic, and an impeccable balance between tragedy and comedy. I can't believe some people hate this spectacle.
5.0/5 - DirectorsPete MichelsJim ReardonStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightHomer becomes chief of police after a scandal forces Wiggum out.Finding uncovered ground in this show is each year harder. This episode is mostly a rehash of Homer the Vigilante, but fairly superior, and also takes elements from older episodes and uses them better. It is one of the most entertaining episodes ever. The main appearance of The Springfield Mafia is excellent as always, and there are priceless gags everywhere.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorCarlos BaezaStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightIn an effort to increase the dismal television ratings for their space launches, NASA decides to send an ordinary man into space, and Homer is chosen for the task.I am a sucker of movies and TV shows about outer space, and of course, The Simpsons had to explore this topic sooner or later. It's still hard to believe, however, how epic and yet grounded and believable this masterpiece is, being still and forever the most epic output of this show and a timeless classic that everyone must watch.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorsMike B. AndersonBob AndersonStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerYeardley SmithHomer and Bart put together a team to author the next successful tween novel franchise and make a million dollars, but discover that they need Lisa's help to pull it off.The Simpsons explore the writing industry with this heavily satirical episode that analyzes the complicated process of writing through a delightful parody of Ocean's, mind-blowing heists, brilliant plot twists, a clever format, and exceptional humor, and the unforgettable guest appearance of Neil Gaiman. This episode is a winner.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorMike B. AndersonStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightThe Simpsons move to the town of Cypress Creek, where Homer works for a friendly boss who happens to be a supervillain; the rest of the family has a hard time with the transfer.Albert Brooks is a recurring guest star of The Simpsons, and his character of Hank Scorpio will be the one that identifies him, because he is lovely. Scorpio enhances the quality of a standard story to one of the funniest of all time due to his grace, his occurrences, his treatment with Homer, and for being the most relatable and adorable villain ever.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorsJim ReardonMike B. AndersonStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightHomer's rush to the hospital to re-attach his severed thumb, Lisa's rush to school to win the science fair, and Bart's run-in with an illegal fireworks scheme interconnect from their point of view. This is my favorite episode of the polarizing Scully years and it's not an unpopular opinion, because it is universally acclaimed. It has a truly unique story-telling (that is what makes it so special) with excellent pacing and puts the characters in extreme situations without being outlandish. It's one of the few episodes of this century that doesn't have haters.
Rating: 5.0/5 - DirectorMark KirklandStarsDan CastellanetaJulie KavnerNancy CartwrightAfter realizing how unpopular she is, a disillusioned Lisa sees the vacation to Ned Flanders' beach house as an opportunity to reinvent herself.Lisa is so relatable in this grounded, down-to-earth episode about the loneliness of an eight-year-old girl who decides to hide her real personality to be accompanied in summer. It's a deep and sad output that will make you empathize with Lisa and adore her for sure. As someone who suffered from this situation, I feel touched by this one.
