VeggieTales repurposed for TV
"Mail, mail, here is your mail. It's here in my bag, not a bucket or pail. I'll bring it through hailstorm or blizzard or gale, for I am the man who delivers your mail!"-Jimmy Gourd
If you saw any of these stories on TV, please give their videos your user rating to verify increased exposure. In the Steve of time between LarryBoy and the Bad Apple and The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything, Big Idea got the rights to repurpose and rebroadcast their VeggieTales videos on TV, which was also 10 years since the first time VeggieTales was broadcast on network television with The VeggieTales Christmas Spectacular in 1998, on NBC. The first half had various characters singing songs while Bob went to look for The Toy That Saved Christmas, and the second half had Bob finally find The Toy That Saved Christmas to show us. However, in the TV version, the silly song where Larry waits for Santa Claus was already played earlier, so there is no Silly Song break in The Toy That Saved Christmas. I watched some episodes of VeggieTales on TV on the after-school Qubo block of Ion. It had 26 episodes from 2006 to 2008. The 4 episodes of LarryBoy: The Cartoon Adventures also aired on Qubo during that time, and they were already fit for a half-hour block, each being 21 minutes. Here, I list every VeggieTales movie in the order their stories were broadcast on TV, when they were broadcast, and which episode of which they were a part. OGA stands for Original Airing. Broadcasting VeggieTales on TV was always a big problem for NBC and Ion because they were religiously neutral networks. While they usually don't delete references to God in the original stories, that is the reason why Bob's House segments do not end with Bob and Larry saying "God made you special...and He loves you very much."
The wonderful thing about old VeggieTales videos being broadcast on traditional weekly TV are, it hardly costs any money or time to animate new material, because only 3 minutes per episode of new scenes at Bob's house need to be animated. Usually, you can tell by the animation what year the story originally came out. For example, Dave and the Giant Pickle, coming out in 1995, looks far different from the scenes at Bob's house in 2006. I still like that the TV broadcasts kept the two countertop scenes in the middle of the story when Larry as LarryBoy asked Bob a question about the story he told about Dave. Sometimes, the stories are too short to fill a 23-minute time block, and that is when a Silly Song with Larry, or one of the Auto-tainment songs, is randomly chosen to pad out the rest of the episode. After Jonah: A VeggieTales movie, the writers stopped confining their stories to 30-40 minutes and allowed them to run a bit longer. While it was helpful for 23-minute episodes for some videos to have two different stories (see A Snoodle's Tale, The Search for Samson's Hairbrush and Sheerluck Holmes), you really need to check the original runtime on VHS/DVD to know if it's too long or too short for TV. I also think it's kind of interesting to see how different stories from different videos can cover the same themes. All The Bananas (King George and the Ducky) and Lyle the Kindly Viking both teach us about sharing, or Babysitter in DeNile (Duke and the Great Pie War) and The Story of Flibber-O-Loo (Are You My Neighbor?) both teach us about caring for family and neighbors.
Whenever a part of a video is aired on TV, the whole credits and cast list are played, which gets very confusing when you mesh segments of two or three things together, and the whole cast from every segment of the original video needs to be listed. For example, The Gourds Must Be Crazy from Are You My Neighbor, The Forgive-O-Matic from God Wants Me To Forgive Them, and His Cheeseburger from Madame Blueberry are all broadcast in the same 23 minutes despite having only pieces of same theme in common. The Bob's House segments list no voice cast of their own, but that is okay because they only have 7 characters and 3 voice actors total in those segments and the TV theme song.
Phil Vischer as Bob the Tomato, Pa Grape, Archibald Asparagus, Jimmy Gourd, Mr. Lunt
Mike Nawrocki as Larry the Cucumber
Lisa Pautz as Junior Asparagus
In addition to Bob and Larry hosting, Pa Grape also has a different speaking part in every episode to comment on Archibald's sweater. Sometimes Archibald would say something in return. The only episodes where Archibald doesn't talk at the end of the opening, appear the in Bob's House segments, or the stories and silly songs shown during the episode, are Rack, Shack and Benny and An Easter Carol Part 2.

The "Silly Song with Larry" involves takes place in the thirties, with Larry trying to protect his top hat from being squashed, and singing in Sinatra-like tunes. The episode's entire story is supposedly a lost Gilbert and Sullivan musical, which Archibald learns at the end was just a prank script. It involves a friendly young viking who continually leaves the ship with some money and returns with an empty bag. In the first, "The Strange Case of Dr. Jiggle and Mr. Sly," Scooter the Carrot and Larry investigate the appearances of a flashy, disco-dancing gourd in the dark streets of London. Then Larry and a female friend team up for the Silly Song "Sport Utility Vehicle," which pokes fun at preppy SUV owners who dream of using their rugged vehicles for more than just trips to the doughnut shop. After the song, the title segment follows (in Dr. Seuss-style rhyming verse) the morality tale of a winged creature called a Snoodle, who learns his true self-worth during a mountaintop journey. As a special bonus, the similarly-Seussian "The Story of Flibber-o-loo," from "VeggieTales: Are You My Neighbor (1999) (V)", ends the video.OGA May 18, 2004

Josh asking Bob "Do I know you?" to which Bob says "I'm the narrator." 48 seconds where the French Peas make fun of Josh before the second time he says "I'm a cucumber", 14 seconds where the Israelites walk away from Jericho, 8 seconds before Junior says "Wow. Those were very interesting directions!" 7 seconds where Jimmy says "Our God told us to do it this way." 8 seconds where Jimmy says "I've got Slushee in my ear." and Jimmy's last lines "Boy, did I pick a lousy day to wear my contacts!" and "Does anybody have any saline?" were cut for time. Episodes 27 & 28: An Easter Carol teaches Louis about having hope for tomorrow. In Part 1, 66 seconds of Reverend Gilbert telling his son Edmund that they need to have hope and Moyer telling Laura about Ebenezer tearing down the church, 10 seconds of Moyer walking Laura back to St. Michael's Orphanage, 11 seconds of Ebenezer drinking tea and trying to stay awake, and 26 seconds of Millward hoisting Cavis up and avoiding the constable were cut for time. In Part 2, 10 seconds of Seymour questioning Easter with plastic eggs and Hope's Song were cut for time. (March 15/March 22, 2008)
Note: An Easter Carol is a sequel to The Star of Christmas, which, four years prior to the series at Bob the Tomato's house, aired on PBS for 1 hour. It was the second time VeggieTales had been broadcast on network TV in December, the first time being The Toy That Saved Christmas on NBC in 1998. Like these regular episodes, The Toy That Saved Christmas had other animation made for TV broadcasts surrounding it. Other veggies put on other Christmas-related musical numbers, and this episode's Silly Song, Oh Santa, was played a lot earlier in the show, but since it was a full-hour broadcast, the VeggieTales Christmas Spectacular had time to include the whole story. Oh Santa was reused as a Silly Song Break for the 2002 PBS broadcast of The Star of Christmas from.
If you tried to make more Bob's House episodes out of every 4:3 episode (from before the second movie), all 26 episodes that are not the 4 silly song karaoke episodes and Auto-tainment, I can verify that Big Idea could indeed make an additional 10 half-hour episodes for a total 38. 39 if you put together Bob's Vacation and Lessons From the Sock Drawer. For starters, The Star of Christmas, Lord of the Rings, and The Wonderful Wizard of Ha's can each make 2 episodes. But I can also imagine four other combinations of different stories and Silly/Autotainment songs.
-Omelet, the silly song Pizza Angel, and The Story of George Mueller can make up an episode about asking for help when you need food. After telling the story of George Mueller starring his great-grandfather, Simon, Pa Grape shows us the Auto-tainment song Erie Canal to tell us another tale of his travels.
-Tales From The Crisper and The Grapes of Wrath are both stories that Junior could tell somebody who is afraid of somebody picking on them.
-Larry's Lagoon is something Larry could show a kid whose parents are mad at them for breaking their car, and teach them to ask for forgiveness. In the middle of the story, The Dance of the Cucumber would come to pad out the time. After Larry's Lagoon, Larry would play another Silly Song, Sport Utility Vehicle, to show us another one of his silly travels.
-Daniel and the Lion's Den and Lutfi's Fanciful Flannelgraph (The Story of Saint Patrick) would both teach us about people who were kidnapped, but always prayed to God to keep them safe and it helped them overcome adversity.
With all the 16:9 videos, if I imagined them being episodes, most of them could be long enough for 2 episodes, but I also thought of putting together Lenny and the Lost Birthday and Snooderella, and pairing Abe and the Amazing Promise with The Little House That Stood, each from the four videos with two stories.
At the end of the 1 1/2-year run of VeggieTales on TV, 20 out of 26 films got their stories broadcast on TV in 28 episodes. If Prince Omelet and The Story of George Mueller were paired for an episode, it would be 21. We covered just almost everything from Are You My Neighbor? To Moe and the Big Exit. The only Tales between them which were not aired at Bob's house are The Star of Christmas, Lord of the Beans and The Wonderful Wizard of Ha's. While I can do without seeing The Star of Christmas, and Lisa Junior Asparagus's shortened remakes (XD) of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and The Wizard of Oz on TV, I am very disappointed that nobody made an episode out of the shorter first stories preceding Lyle and Gideon. I am sure somebody thought about it, but apparently Qubo's second 13-episode order with uneven 6:7 halves was sadly 1 too short. As I said, the Pizza Angel Silly Song and Pa Grape's Erie Canal song would fit right in to fill the time after each story, which make up 13 minutes together. Since Season 3 was 7 episodes, this could have been put at the middle of Season 2 to make that 7 instead of 6. Prince Omlet/Pizza Angel/George Mueller/Erie Canal should have been the 4th episode of Season 2, and aired on November 17, 2007.
