- DirectorMichael HigginsStarsAmbra Gatto BergamascoNatasha EverittHenrik GardIn a remote rural estate house, a woman sleeps, she is alone. It's a time not far from the dawn of the moving image, the obsessed and wealthy Dr. Epstein engineers a number of scientific experiments. He subjects his adopted children, Pete and Re-Pete, along with his darling flapper, Baby Dee, to his various scientific tasks. Things take a decidedly strange turn when Epstein makes a deal with some shifty-looking vagabonds. On doing so he opens a door to the unknown, ruptures the fabric of time and unleashes a shadow-like character bent on reducing all those he encounters to dust. Photographed on expired 35mm film with a 50year old Soviet camera, Autumnal Sleeps takes inspiration from early silent cinema. The characters and the nature of performance resemble those from a roadshow attraction while highlighting the illusory power of voyeurism and exhibitionism. Like unrestored film of early cinema, the image flickers and the colours bleed creating a psychedelic sensation as one transported through a haunting industrial score broken up with poetic interludes that examine the deeper emotions of the characters.International Feature Film Competition

- DirectorMasashi YamamotoStarsKaho MinamiSeikô ItôSoran TamotoAt a large mansion on the outskirts of Tokyo, Shuji SASAYA looks around a room with full of packed cardboard boxes. He has to sell this mansion because of his mistake. His hermit son, Yuta, brings a homeless into the house, and his daughter has frustrated by her reckless father, and wrote on Twitter, "Let's have a party today at my place. Anyone is welcome!!" A re-tweet sound is ringing at high speed beside her sleeping. The first to come to the Sasayas were moving companies Taichi and Atsushi, and a divorced mother of Yuta and Akane, Akiko. She seems to have hit-and-run away from the moving truck. A gay couple looking for a wedding venue, elementary school students come to rent a shower, two men cultivating suspicious plants on the premises of the Sasayas, and other peculiar people get together to have a wedding, a funeral and even a festival at the mansion. Both the living and the dying are in the rage of frenzy, the story unfolds.Focus: Masashi Yamamoto + Opening Film

- DirectorMasashi YamamotoStarsAli AhmedArata FurutaMika KumagaiBlending widescreen cinematography with digital video, JUNK FOOD casts an unblinking but painterly eye over the darkest, most brutal fringes of contemporary Japanese society. JUNK FOOD depicts the hitherto unseen world of aberrant sexuality and savage violence that emerges when the sun goes down and clean, orderly Tokyo exposes its sordid underbelly. From gambling dens to wrestling rings, through make-shift funerals and crime-of-passion murders, director Masashi Yamamoto expertly knits together a series of smoky, neon-lit vignettes with documentary immediacy and gruesome clarity. Cashing in her antiseptic white-collar world for a white powder hell of lethal sex-play and furtive drug abuse, a beautiful young computer programmer unravels her way to the gutter. Clinging to an empty dream of success, a Pakistani immigrant graduates from armed robbery to double homicide. Using the same copycat precision with which they dress and drive, a carbon copy LA style street gang mounts a bloodthirsty coup d'etat of appalling viciousness.Focus: Masashi Yamamoto
- DirectorSion SonoStarsAkira FujiwaraMichiko HidaHiromi KawanishiA story of the restrictions of family life, the desire to break free, restlessness, helplessness and the fear of becoming an adult.Japanese 8mm Madness
- DirectorAkira OgataStarsKatsurô OnoueThe jishu film scene was an incredibly networked community, and the legendary Tokyo Cabbageman K stands as a good example. Ishii collaborator Akira Ogata-now a well-known commercial film director in his own right-shot this story of nightmarish transformation in direct reference to Kafka's The Metamorphosis with Ishii and others working on the set. When K awakens and finds himself partially transformed into a cabbage, he must come to terms with his new state and how it puts him at the center of a media storm and unsolicited desires. The film features one of the most famous soundtracks in jishu film history.Japanese 8mm Madness
- DirectorShin'ya TsukamotoStarsNariaki SenbaNobu KanaokaKei FujiwaraHikari is a boy who is bullied and teased by the other boys at school because he has the odd distinction of having an electricity pole growing out of his back. However, one of his classmates, a girl named Momo, comes to his rescue. Hikari thanks her by sharing his secret possession with her: a time machine. He then activates the time machine which transports him 25 years into a dark, dystopian, world of the future. There he encounters members of the Shinsengumi Vampire Gang in the process of hunting a woman named Dr. Sariba who is revealed to be Momo's future self. She explains to Hikari that she had been long expecting his arrival from the past and that he has a crucial role to play here -- he and he alone must save the world.Japanese 8mm Madness
- DirectorGakuryû IshiiAn elegiac ode to a loner who finds it difficult to fit in and the inevitable eruption of his frustration, Isolation of 1/880000 tells the story of Takemitsu, a disabled young man caught in the "examination hell" of trying to get into one of Japan's top universities. Director Sogo Ishii (now renamed as Gakuryu Ishii) was the original 8mm punk, whose works expressed unhinged energy and made speed, intensity and rebellion their stylistic and thematic center, carrying over into his later 16mm and 35mm films such as Crazy Thunder Road and Crazy Family. In contrast, Isolation prefigures the more ethereal aesthetic of his big budget 1990s films.Japanese 8mm Madness
- DirectorKatsuyuki HiranoStarsSion SonoMasahiro SugiyamaA full-frontal attack on mid-1980s conservative Japan, Happiness Avenue features a rowdy cast (including Sion Sono) wreaking havoc on the town of Shizuoka. Kicking off with its countermodel-a disciplined right-wing group lined up and demanding the return of the Kuril Islands from the Soviet Union-Katsuyuki Hirano and his group counter with only loosely organized anarchy. Straddling the line between documentary, street performance art and juvenile provocations, the film culminates in an exploration of the town's sewage system that becomes a health hazard for its participants. Nominally based on a manga by Akira creator Katsuhiro Otomo, the film has no obvious relation to its supposed source material. Hirano continued into one of the more unconventional careers of Pia award-winning directors. Rather than enter mainstream filmmaking, he became notorious for shooting highly experimental pornography for the video circuit, as well as documentaries about his bicycle tours that showed widely at international film festivals, among them Yumika (1997) with his on-and-off lover, adult video star Yumika Hayashi.Japanese 8mm Madness

- DirectorStan BrakhageStarsWalter NewcombThis way madness - or experimental filmmaking - lies. A solitary man in coat and tie enters an apartment that may be a converted garage. It's midnight. He appears agitated and distraught. He throws a glass of water in his face and laughs. He takes off the coat and tie. His moods swing. He stares at a light bulb. He removes his shirt. He lights a cigarette. He looks at a book. He does something drastic and self-destructive. He opens doors to a garden that we see as a film's negative. We see his face as if peering around a plant. The garden doors close behind him.Dream-Films
- DirectorGregory J. MarkopoulosStarsMario AntonniniFrederic Burae DavenportThings spin: amusement park rides, a phonograph record. A man wakes, shaves, and takes a phone call. Another man, in a kimono, walks in the woods, stops, and opens a small decorative box on the forest floor. People at an amusement park called Little Harlem enjoy themselves. A man walks through another amusement park, called Cavalcade Worlds, as midway rides spin. At a house, an older woman cleans; a pre-teen girl sets the table; a teenaged boy showers. After he dresses, he holds a candle high above his head and walks swiftly toward a young man standing bare-chested, his arms extended. A man arrives home where the girl has set the table. The youth sleeps. Christmas?Dream-Films

- DirectorChris PetersOver a two day period, an A.I. repeatedly watched the Hitchcock classic "Vertigo." Starting as a blank slate, the A.I. received its entire knowledge of our visual world from this classic film. During the process, artist Chris Peters recorded the machine's neural network forming in real time - the "movie experience" made manifest. A 5 minute film was made from these recordings, not footage in the traditional sense of photographed scenes, but footage of the internal experience of a new intelligence learning about our world for the first time. To complete the experiment, a separate A.I. was used to write a narration for the recordings. Given a few lines of dialogue from Vertigo, the machine generated sentences that went off on their own wild tangents. The bizarre results were used verbatim, only edited for length. With machine-generated imagery and narration, the film gives us a glimpse into a world at once familiar and fantastic - our world, as seen by a new intelligence of our own design.International Short Films Competition
