2020: My favorite Russian movies
Paradoxes of time: despite the fact that the Pandemic is raging all over the world, quarantines and lockdowns are all around, cinemas are closed, festivals are only online, 2020 turned out to be extremely interesting for Russian cinema. First of all, this is the merit of director Ilya Khrzhanovskiy, who for many previous years filmed his epic about the genius physicist Landau, and released these films only in 2020. Secondly, this is again a huge merit of the Kinotavr Film Festival, which, albeit with a delay, was held live in Sochi in the fall. And thirdly, this is the merit of Russian serials, the quality of which has noticeably increased in recent years.
Here are my 10 best Russian films out of 66 I've seen in 2020.
Ilya Khrzhanovskiy needs to put up a memorial for the cinematic and human feat that he performed. The DAU film series is an uncompromising and frank panorama of the life of a secret Soviet research institute. Probably for this reason, these films are unlikely to hit the official Russian distribution in the near future. It is interesting that the author of the unique DAU project himself initially insisted on continuous viewing of his films at once. The genre of the film "Man from Podolsk" by Semyon Serzin is officially defined as comedy and drama. But in fact, this is an absurd horror film about the life of small people in a large state machine. The film "Scarecrow" by a talented director from Yakutia Dmitrii Davydov with a budget of $ 20,000 deservedly defeated other competitors with much larger budgets at the Kinotavr festival in Sochi. Another wonderful film about the endless expanses of the Far North is the adventure drama "The Whaler Boy" by Philipp Yuryev. The talented director Mikhail Segal continues to delight fans. Best Comedy of the Year - the satirical film "Deeper!". Best Eastern - "The Red Ghost" by Andrey Bogatyrev. Best Horror - "Side Effect" by Aleksey Kazakov. Best series - modern adaptation of the work of the great writer Nikolai Gogol "Dead Souls", very boldly staged by Grigoriy Konstantinopolskiy. Best Russian TV series - "The Dyatlov Pass Incident" tells about an investigation into the causes of the death of a tourist group in the Urals, based on real events. Other remarkable Russian TV series in 2020: historical detective "The Dyatlov Pass Incident", drama "Psycho", action horror "The Survival Game", drama "Chicks", action "Six Empty Seats", drama "Germans", thriller "Call-Center" and comedy "Project "Anna Nikolaevna". An interesting fact: the action of most of the films on the list takes place far from Moscow: in a deep province, in Ural, in Siberia, in Yakutia and in Chukotka! Best Cartoon - "The Nose or Conspiracy of Mavericks" by Andrey Khrzhanovskiy. The highest-grossing Russian film - the champion of 2020 - Zhora Kryzhovnikov's "Ice 2" grossed over 22 million dollars.
