Some surreal blend of Refnian neo-noir, Malickian expressionism and, of course, Fassbinderian excess, Burhan Qurbani's extensively modern vision of "Berlin Alexanderplatz" is unwieldy, but never wants for exciting visual, structural and atmospheric experiments, or drifts from more commercial and emotional sensibilities with abstract action, suspenseful pacing and human-driven dramatic cadence that round out this daunting craftsmanship as a creatively and viscerally rewarding work of art.

Though Burhan Qurbani's translation of Alfred Döblin's timeless epic to the modern age proves unstable in its sweeping declarations and artful melodrama, his "Berlin Alexanderplatz" is a bona fide gangland epic and sobering state of the union charged by astounding spectacle and eclectic angst, and steeped in complex character and tragedy befitting the fullest feature of 2020, never mind the social upheaval that has ushered globalization and the whole Western world into an uncertain new decade.
