Repatriated to South Africa at the end of the 1980's, some of the ex-combatants still languish in the ruins of Pomfret, a former asbestos-mining town remotely situated at the edge of the Kalahari Desert. When the town's dilapidated buildings turn into a film-set and the ex-soldiers become actors in the Biblical story of Judas Iscariot, it prompts a confrontation with their past. Pivoting between Biblical myth and present-day reality, the film pulls into focus the paradox of being both perpetrator and victim. It reflects upon the notion of betrayal and free will, while providing a compelling view of those at the margins of history. During the course of the film, the prevalent voice of Judas eventually merges into the voice of the filmmaker, interrogating the fundamentals of human existence.

- DirectorFirouzeh KhosrovaniStarsFarahnaz SharifiHossein KhosrovaniTayi"Mother married a photo of Father," says director Firouzeh Khosrovani in the opening of this deeply personal documentary. She's not speaking metaphorically though. Her mother Tayi literally married a portrait of Hossein in Teheran -he was in Switzerland studying radiology and was unable to travel back to his homeland for the wedding. The event illustrates the abyss that still exists in their marriage: Hossein is a secular progressive and Tayi a devout, traditional Muslim. But this family history is also a sort of x-ray, laying bare the conflicts of Iranian society in the run-up to, and aftermath of the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Besides Khosrovani's commentary, we hear letters being read aloud and recollections of conversations between her parents. At the same time, we see photographs and videos from the family archive. These fragments of intimacy are interspersed with stylized shots of the filmmaker's parental home, its decor and furnishings subtly reflecting each new phase in her parents' marriage-and in Iranian society. - DirectorAriadne AsimakopoulosMaartje WegdamSixteen years after rebels abducted him as a child, Opono Opondo returns home to Uganda as an adult war commander. Now he has to re-adapt to civil society. Opono grew up to become a war commander in the Lord's Resistance Army of Joseph Kony. Now, Opono must fight for acceptance back home, in a place where he doesn't know the codes and conventions and where the neighbors fear him. The film shows Opono's fight for his future, while struggling to come to terms with his past and to reconcile with his family. While Opono pursues a new career as a carpenter - he opens a shop and designs business cards - he attempts to reconnect with the people closest to him: his brother, his uncle and his best friend who used to be in the LRA with him. A day trip to visit his mom painfully exposes how the scars of war also continue to divide them. One day Opono's former comrade, LRA top commander Dominic Ongwen, is captured and taken to the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Ongwen is charged with seventy counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Questions of accountability start to dominate Opono's thoughts. Suddenly he gets an opportunity. Suddenly he gets the opportunity to join the Ugandan army. Opono now has to decide whether he will pick up his arms once again, but this time to fight his former comrades. No place for a Rebel bears witness to the grim reality of a former rebel who tries to break the mold after his return to civil society. The film is an intimate account, a journey into Opono's world, complicated by the trauma from a violent past as much as from being silenced in the present. Yet above all, the film shows the courageous attempt of a human being to re-shape his fate.
