Comments are from when I first saw the movie. Its tough to compare so many genres so there are some cases where the ratings conflict with this ordering. (ie some 7s rank higher than some 8s etc)

- DirectorGareth EvansStarsIko UwaisYayan RuhianArifin PutraOnly a short time after the first raid, Rama goes undercover with the thugs of Jakarta and plans to bring down the syndicate and uncover the corruption within his police force.Apr 20
Unsurprisingly wonderful action scenes like the first film. The biggest difference with this sequel was the amount of time spent on story/character development. That was both good and bad. While it did make for a richer story, it also slowed down the movie overall. Thankfully everything from story to characters to action was so well done that its hard to complain about anything. Probably on par with the first overall, with even better fight scenes. Hammer Girl and Baseball Bat Man should get their own movie. Hollywood needs only to look at the Raid films to see what is wrong with Hollywood action films. 9/10 - DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattVin DieselBradley CooperA group of intergalactic criminals must pull together to stop a fanatical warrior with plans to purge the universe.July 30
Even better than I expected it to be. The whole ensemble was pretty great. The Raccoon was a clear standout. I'd watch more with him anytime. It was even better than the Avengers for humour, but not as good overall. Can't wait for the next one! 9/10 - DirectorDavid FincherStarsBen AffleckRosamund PikeNeil Patrick HarrisWith his wife's disappearance having become the focus of an intense media circus, a man sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent.Oct 5
Easily surpassed my already high expectations. For the genre, its one of the best I've seen. The crafting of the mystery and how it unfolds was excellent. I couldnt have predicted where it was going for most of the film. The multiple twists were all unexpected and nearly all satisfying. Performances were strong and perhaps even Oscar worthy in Affleck's case. At about 2.5 hours it actually felt too short. I want the story to go even further, and I was never bored by it. 9/10 - DirectorCédric JimenezStarsJean DujardinGilles LelloucheCéline SalletteA French police magistrate spends years trying to take down one of the country's most powerful drug rings.Sep 13
Beautifully constructed crime drama. Every performance was spot on. The music (both score and soundtrack) kept everything moving and set the tone perfectly. Only minor complaints are that the lead protagonist and lead antagonist look too similar and the use of handheld/shakycam in parts. This is easily one of my favourite tiff films this year. 9/10 - DirectorMarjane SatrapiStarsRyan ReynoldsGemma ArtertonAnna KendrickA likable guy pursues his office crush with help from his evil talking pets, but things turn sinister when she stands him up for a date.Sep 12
From the premise I was expecting something pretty crazy. It managed to surpass my expectations by a long shot. Great performances from all, especially Ryan Reynolds in all his roles. There were several times that I saw something coming but thought they wouldn't go that far and then they took it even deeper. This is definitely a dark dark comedy. The film was really nice to look at stylistically as well. I'm ready to watch it again already. 9/10 - DirectorDavid Robert MitchellStarsMaika MonroeKeir GilchristOlivia LuccardiA young woman is followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter.Sep 9
Wonderfully unique concept for a horror film! I'd love to see this as a TV series or at least a sequel. Everything about the followers and the concept that goes along with them was well thought out and well executed. I don't know that I would say its predictable but the ending was exactly what I thought of at the beginning of the film to get rid of the problem. It was odd that, for the most part, there were no parents present and often times inexplicably no parents or even adults around. The score when the followers were coming was nicely creepy. 9/10 - DirectorPhil LordChristopher MillerStarsChris PrattWill FerrellElizabeth BanksAn ordinary LEGO construction worker, thought to be the prophesied as "special", is recruited to join a quest to stop an evil tyrant from gluing the LEGO universe into eternal stasis.Mar 25
Pretty much what I expected from this film, aside from the ending. Definitely a unique animation style, though I didnt find it consistent enough with everything looking like it was built from lego. Fun dialogue and story that made it interesting even for an adult. I would have liked to see a more extensive use of the licensed characters. The last 20 mins or so really bumped it up a notch. 8/10 - DirectorTheodore MelfiStarsBill MurrayMelissa McCarthyNaomi WattsA young boy whose parents have just divorced finds an unlikely friend and mentor in the misanthropic, bawdy, hedonistic war veteran who lives next door.Sep 6
Fav tiff movie so far this year. Everyone's performance was great! Touching and emotional film. The characters were charming enough to carry the film even without the strong story. With all of it together it was a great film. 8/10 - DirectorWes AndersonStarsRalph FiennesF. Murray AbrahamMathieu AmalricA writer encounters the owner of an aging high-class hotel, who tells him of his early years serving as a lobby boy in the hotel's glorious years under an exceptional concierge.Mar 28
Another beautifully shot Wes Anderson film. The sets and the cinematography are enough to make this film good. On top of that it has a top notch cast and an interesting story. The inconsistent pacing is what lost it some points for me. If it could keep up the frenetic pacing it had in parts it would be great. 8/10 - DirectorJason ReitmanStarsKaitlyn DeverRosemarie DeWittAnsel ElgortA group of high school teenagers and their parents attempt to navigate the many ways the Internet has changed their relationships, their communications, their self-images, and their love lives.Sep 7
This film was similar, in theme and style, to Disconnect. Much like that film, it shows us the dark side of the internet because of how easy it makes it to communicate in ways and with people that we wouldn't otherwise feel comfortable doing. Reitmans ability to transform his actors into the characters seamlessly is evident once again. The beautiful performances really make the film. 8/10 - DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsChris EvansSamuel L. JacksonScarlett JohanssonAs Steve Rogers struggles to embrace his role in the modern world, he teams up with a fellow Avenger and S.H.I.E.L.D agent, Black Widow, to battle a new threat from history: an assassin known as the Winter Soldier.Apr 8
After the relative letdown that the first film was, this was a very nice surprise. Of all the superhero movies, this was one of, if not the best plotlines. All of the supporting characters were strong, and managed to steal alot of the scenes from the titular character. For me it couldnt surpass the Avengers or Iron Man for best superhero film just based on Captain America not being my fav. He did move up alot in my book after this film though. My only big complaint about this film was the extensive and unnecessary use of handheld camera work. This resulted in blurry action in some parts and distracting camera movement during simple conversations. Its pretty sad when the addition of a $20 tripod could improve a high budget superhero action movie. 8/10 - DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartIan McKellenHugh JackmanThe X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.June 3
Very pleased to see that this matched up nicely to First Class. I'd even say that this one is the best of the bunch. The time travel bit was handled nicely and all the performances were good. I was left wanting more Quicksilver. I found Mystique annoying whenever she was blue. First of all she looks awful like that and 2ndly it never makes sense for her to look like that when she can look any way she wants. She kept changing back when anyone could see her even though she should still have been undercover. Aside from that minor complaint I liked all the characters. It was a nice surprise seeing Peter Dinklage. After a 2nd viewing, I could see this moving to a 9. 8/10 - DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsMiles TellerJ.K. SimmonsMelissa BenoistA promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.Sep 8
Very much the typical musician/athlete/artist/whatever trying to make it big storyline. The performances of the 2 leads is what sets it apart. I especially enjoyed the scenes where the music teacher was screaming at the students and hurling hilarious insults at them. The director did such a good job with the intense feel good ending that it had me thinking 9/10 after the film. Now already only a few hours later I've settled in on an 8. I'll be surprised if this isn't nominated for some oscars and I'd say it has a good chance at the TIFF people's choice award. 8/10 - DirectorJuanfer AndrésEsteban RoelStarsMacarena GómezNadia de SantiagoHugo Silva1950s Madrid: The agoraphobic Montse raised her now 18 y.o. kid sister. The upstairs neighbor falls down the stairs and breaks a leg. The crazy Montse takes him in.Sep 5
With the plot description calling this a Misery like thriller there was a good chance for disappointment. Thankfully it didn't disappoint in the least. Much like Misery it has a small cast of strong characters with a story that builds and build as as it goes. There are countless similarities to Misery. Certainly a film I'll gladly watch again. 8/10 - DirectorJosh BooneStarsShailene WoodleyAnsel ElgortNat WolffHazel and Gus are teenagers who meet at a cancer support group and fall in love. They both share the same acerbic wit and a love of books, especially "An Imperial Affliction", so they embark on a journey to visit an author in Amsterdam.July 1
I wouldn't have been very likely to watch this if not for the combination of the good reviews and free tickets. I'm really glad I did see it though. It was well written, surprisingly well acted and highly emotional. The humour mixed in was a nice addition to lighten things up and to get the audience even closer to the characters which served to heighten the emotion felt for them as well. 8/10 - DirectorSeth MacFarlaneStarsSeth MacFarlaneCharlize TheronLiam NeesonAs a cowardly farmer begins to fall for the mysterious new woman in town, he must put his newly found courage to the test when her husband, a notorious gun-slinger, announces his arrival.June 17
I'm not sure why this is reviewing so poorly. It is laugh out loud funny plenty of times. The choice to give it a full proper story does make it a bit lengthy but also keeps it from being simply a dumb comedy. Don't get me wrong...it is still 95% dumb comedy, but the story does elevate it a bit. There were several good cameos, but by far the best was Christopher Lloyd! That pretty much made the whole movie! 8/10 - DirectorFrank MillerRobert RodriguezStarsMickey RourkeJessica AlbaJosh BrolinSome of Sin City's most hard-boiled citizens cross paths with a few of its more reviled inhabitants.Aug 26
Stylistically just as good or better than the first film. If you like that style you are sure to like this film. Eva Green was good and had so much nudity it was almost tiring...almost. Juno Temple and Christopher Lloyd were nice surprises as I had no idea they would be in the film. My only complaint is that it felt a little long with Jessica Alba's part. Her story was the weakest and I could have done without her altogether. She looks good but her dancing (which is throughout the entire film) is mostly unsexy and goofy. 8/10 - DirectorSteve JamesStarsRoger EbertChaz EbertGene SiskelThe life and career of the renowned film critic and social commentator, Roger Ebert.Aug 17
I was not prepared for how emotional this doc was. I knew that Ebery had lost his ability to speak towards the end of his life but I didn't realize how he looked! That is a shocking image to see. I especially enjoyed the parts about him and Siskel fighting. 8/10 - DirectorMatt ReevesStarsGary OldmanKeri RussellAndy SerkisThe fragile peace between apes and humans is threatened as mistrust and betrayal threaten to plunge both tribes into a war for dominance over the Earth.July 24
You can't go wrong with Apes riding horses! Going into this movie you know a war is going to happen. The problem is that I was enjoying the lead up so much that the war felt like it was just an interruption to the already interesting enough film. After leaving the theatre I thought this movie was good but that I'd never want to see it again. A few days later I've already changed my mind. 8/10 - DirectorBennett MillerStarsSteve CarellChanning TatumMark RuffaloU.S. Olympic wrestling champions and brothers Mark Schultz and Dave Schultz join "Team Foxcatcher", led by eccentric multi-millionaire John du Pont, as they train for the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, but John's self-destructive behavior threatens to consume them all.Sep 9
There has been a lot of buzz around this film as an early lock for a best pic nom, along with other noms I'm sure. Strong performances all around, Tatum and Carrell especially. Interesting, though not entirely outside the box, story that sell itself strong in the end. Overall, it didn't live up to the hype for me. It was a really good sports film but not a great film. The style of the film was quiet and thoughtful rather than the all out excitement of a typical sports film. While that difference is not a bad thing, it did serve to take away from the intensity that could have made it great. I'm sure it will gain a best pic nom but it didn't immediately stand out as a must nominate film for me. 8/10 - DirectorKriv StendersStarsSimon PeggTeresa PalmerAlice BragaProfessional hit-man Charlie Wolfe finds himself in three tales of murder, blackmail and revenge after a botched contract assignment.Sep 6
Over the past several years I've seen several good Aussie thrillers. This belongs on that list but it also added in some good comedy. Even without the comedy this would have been good but with it it was even better. There were some good bloody bits, some over the top twists and turns and Simon Pegg in a very different role from normal. Can't go wrong with all that. 8/10 - DirectorAntoine FuquaStarsDenzel WashingtonMarton CsokasChloë Grace MoretzA man who believes he has put his mysterious past behind him cannot stand idly by when he meets a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters.Sep 8
Pretty standard action/thriller. As with most films in that genre, it is very enjoyable as long as you can ignore all the ways that the bad guy could easily have killed the good guy. Denzel was great as the indestructible hero. Moretz was perfect in her role as well. I wish there was even more of the bloody and brutal killings. 8/10 - DirectorDaniel BarnzStarsJennifer AnistonAdriana BarrazaAnna KendrickThe acerbic, hilarious Claire Bennett becomes fascinated by the suicide of a woman in her chronic pain support group. As she uncovers the details of Nina's suicide and develops a poignant relationship with Nina's husband, she also grapples with her own, very raw personal tragedy.Sep 9
Surprisingly emotional drama about loss and new beginnings. Really good performances from most. Surprisingly Kendrick's small role were my least favourite parts. I hope to see Aniston in more dramatic roles. It suits her just as well as comedy does. 8/10 - DirectorLuc BessonStarsScarlett JohanssonMorgan FreemanChoi Min-sikA woman, accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.July 29
A welcome return to sci-fi for Besson. I really enjoyed the story, but I felt like there was much more that could have been done with it. I kept waiting for a big choreographed action scene and it never came. Considering she even made mention that she could hear the music in everything, I would have loved to see a big action scene choreographed perfectly to the music. This was done well in the Fifth Element so could have been even better here. As is it was a good film, but could have been great. 8/10 - DirectorDoug LimanStarsTom CruiseEmily BluntBill PaxtonA soldier fighting aliens gets to relive the same day over and over again, the day restarting every time he dies.June 10
Sci-fi Groundhog Day. Very unique and inventive story. The action scenes could have been much better if not for the 3D and the shaky cam. The aliens were nicely designed, but that was really hard to tell because of the shaky cam in most of their scenes. I was surprised/pleased at the comedy that came along with the Groundhog Day element of it. Steady camera work would have made it a 9, but as is it was still pretty great. 8/10
