All-Time "IMDb 250" Films [1996–2014]
660 ranked "IMDB 250" Films [1996–2014]; this list objectively ranks all films that have been included in an "IMDB 250" ranking, from 1996–2014 [using an expanded formula 'based on IMDB's formula for calculating the Top Rated 250 Titles that provides a true Bayesian estimate' that essentially focuses on year-to-year rankings].
2014 saw a whopping 11 new [and a couple not so new!] films join the All-time 'IMDb 250'. Only 1997 [12] and 1999 [24] have debuted more films since the initial 250 of 1996.
Some observations and thoughts...
In the All-time Top 5, status quo...
In the All-time Top 10, 'One Flew Over...' [8] overtook 'Casablanca' [9], and 'Pulp Fiction' [10] nudged out 'Inception' [11].
In the All-time Top 25, room had to be made for 'Interstellar', debuting at 15, which means most films under it had to fall, with the notable exceptions of '12 Angry Men' [16], 'Two Towers' [20], and 'The Good, the Bad & the Ugly' [21] which rose 1 spot each [keep in mind this is for '1996-2014', not just '2014'!], and ultimately dropping 'Pycho' out of the Top 25 at 26.
Of note in the All-time Top 50, 'City of God' & 'Taxi Driver' climbed three spots to 34 & 38 respectively, 'Amelie' & 'Third Man' fell three spots to 35 & 49 respectively, with 'Alien' dropping one spot and falling out of the Top 50 at 51 [incidentally, 'Aliens' improved one spot to 65].
Of note in the All-time Top 100, 'Raging Bull' had a five spot drop to 67, 'Maltese Falcon' had a nine spot drop to 72, 'Wizard of Oz' fell eight spots to 90, 'Fargo' dropped seven spots to 91, & 'Touch of Evil' with the largest drop, by ten spots to 97 [with the exception of 'Gravity', which debuted in 2013 at 89, but fell completely out of the Top 250 in 2014!]. Falling out of the Top 100 were 'Pan's Labyrinth', falling five spots to 101, and 'Downfall' falling six spots to 103. 'The Green Mile' rose six spots to 85, 'City Lights' rose five spots to 94, 'Forrest Gump' improved six spots to 92, and 'The Great Dictator' joined the Top 100 at 99 by moving up two spots.
Of the 2014 predictions [see below] for films to improve, 9 of 11 proved accurate, with only 'Paths of Glory' holding steady at 57, and 'The Shining' dropping one spot to 77. Notable is the +65 spots of improvement by 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind' at 471.
Of the 2014 predictions [see below] for films to fall, 11 of 11 proved accurate, with 'District 9' making the biggest fall, dropping 14 spots to 198. Also of note, was the correct prediction of 'Pulp Fiction' overtaking 'Inception' in the overall rankings...

Additionally in 2014, 'Before Sunset' made a return to the yearly Top 250 after a seven year absence at 250, and thereby reducing its annual slide by only 13 spots [296].
And, as mentioned previously, three films saw their first yearly Top 250 action after missing the cut in previous years: 2012's 'Gangs of Wasseypur', debuting at 196 in 2014, and 339 all-time; 2004's 'Swades: We the People', debuting at 239 in 2014, and 615 all-time; and, even more impressively, 2001's 'Do Your Thing', debuting at 165 in 2014, and 485 overall.
'Interstellar'['s] debut at 15 is also impressive, but not as much so as '...Fellowship of the Rings' debut at 1 in 2001, 'American Beauty'['s] debut at 2 in 1999, '...Return of the King'['s] debut at 4 in 2003, 'Dark Knight'['s] debut at 4 in 2008, 'Inception'['s] debut at 6 in 2010, or '...Two Towers' debut at 11 in 2002.
The highest rated all-time 'IMDb 250' film to miss the cut in 2014 is 'Manchurian Candidate' [120]. 'Big Sleep' [142] & 'Hustler' [204] appear poised to compete to do the same in 2015... Other notables to have done the same over the years include: 'Duck Soup', 'African Queen', 'Crouching Tiger...', 'Glory', 'Slumdog Millionaire' [155; also in 2014], 'Black Swan', 'Run, Lola, Run', & 'Toy Story 2'...
Years 1994 & 1999 placed the most films in the Top 100 All-time, with 4 each; 1950, 1957, 1980, 1995, 2001, 2002, & 2006 all placed 3 each in the Top 100 All-time...
The oldest film to place on the 'IMDb 250' is 1920's 'The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari'...
The only year since 1920 to not place a film in the 'IMDb 250' is 1932...
Years 1993-1999 all rank as years with the most films placed in the 'IMDb 250'; '93 [20], '94 [18], '95 [28], '97 [19], '98 [21], '99 [21]; however, the year to place the most films on the 'IMDb 250' is [not surprisingly] 1996 [31], the seminal year for the 'IMDb 250' list...
Also not surprisingly, 2014 is the year with the most films [6] that have been voted in the 'IMDb 250' every eligible year [they're new, so couldn't have missed any other year, yet]; however, 1999 has five such films ['Fight Club', 'Matrix', 'American Beauty', Green Mile', & 'Sixth Sense'], and 1994 & 1995 each have four such films [27 years, from 1920-1970, have none]...
PREDICTIONS FOR 2015:
Likely to rise:
'Pulp Fiction', '...Two Towers', 'Goodfellas', 'Matrix', 'Green Mile' [85, +6], 'Star Wars: Episode VI...', 'Intouchables' [102, +18], 'The Hunt'/'Jagten' [176, +33], 'For a Few Dollars More' [194, +10], 'Grave of the Fireflies' [211, +11], 'Lion King' [206, +17], 'Like Stars On Earth' [246, +34], '3 Idiots' [260, +70], 'Howl's Moving Castle' [292, +31], 'Incendies' [297, +88], 'My Neighbor Totoro' [299, +33], 'A Beautiful Mind' [313, +32], 'Rang De Basanti' [319, +80], 'Hachi: A Dog's Tale' [351, +105], 'Infernal Affairs' [358, +23], 'Ip Man' [360, +24], 'Shutter Island' [365, +88], 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind' [471, +65], 'Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India' [514, +46], 'The Help' [535, +98].
Likely to fall:
'Casablanca', 'Dr. Strangelove...', 'Citizen Kane', 'Psycho', 'Maltese Falcon' [72, -9], 'Inglorious Basterds', 'Ran', 'Touch of Evil' [97, -10], 'Black Swan' [166, -21], 'Gravity' [177, -88], 'Wrestler' [195, -13], 'District 9' [198, -14], 'Avatar' [201, -16], 'Kill Bill: Vol.2' [215, -14], 'Star Trek (2009)' [251, -22], 'Curious Case of Benjamin Button' [273, -23], 'Argo' [334, -47], 'Before Midnight' [393, -91], 'Perks of Being a Wallflower' [373, -50], 'Artist' [362, -37], 'Prisoners' [401, -64], 'Hugo' [383, -46], 'Milk' [397, -25], 'True Grit (2010)' [409, -34], & 'Elite Squad: The Enemy Within' [518, -37].
