- DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsMichael KeatonZach GalifianakisEdward NortonA washed-up superhero actor attempts to revive his fading career by writing, directing, and starring in a Broadway production.Wonderful performances around the board, not a single actor is wasted in this 2 hour masterpiece of film-making. The film is made to look like one continuous shot and its effect works perfectly and helps to entrance every viewer and keep your attention on the ever entertaining story presented in front of you. An interesting commentary on cinema today, the story is brilliant and the film overall is wonderful
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsMiles TellerJ.K. SimmonsMelissa BenoistA promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential. In my opinion the best film of the year, the film is extremely intense and its story is presented masterfully and acted out with incredible talent. Each character is great in their own right, but its JK Simmons who manages to steal every single scene he's in, and is in my opinion, one of the most intimidating characters in movie history.
- DirectorDan GilroyStarsJake GyllenhaalRene RussoBill PaxtonA petty thief desperate for work muscles into the world of crime journalism and becomes the star of his own story as he blurs the line between observer and participant. An interesting character study of a man who is nearly detached from humanity, Nightcrawler is easily the darkest film on this list and it's done nearly perfectly. Jake Gyllenhaal proves himself as one of the best actors in Hollywood with this standout performance and the director behind him pulls no punches, showing each crime as a raw event that seems to have no effect on Gyllenhaals character other than to interest him even further.
- DirectorChristopher NolanStarsMatthew McConaugheyAnne HathawayJessica ChastainWhen Earth becomes uninhabitable in the future, a farmer and ex-NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, is tasked to pilot a spacecraft, along with a team of researchers, to find a new planet for humans.A visual masterpiece with a very entertaining story, this 169 minute picture presents a believable story that is by no means perfect, but the film is a very fun epic experience that shouldn't be missed.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsBen AffleckRosamund PikeNeil Patrick HarrisThe husband of a missing woman becomes the chief suspect in her disappearance. One of David Finchers finest works, Gone Girl presents an incredibly suspenseful story that is as dark as it is fascinating. Great performances across the board (Even from a one Tyler Perry), each character is very interesting and serves their purpose, and they all connect to tell a beautifully twisted story.
- DirectorRichard LinklaterStarsEllar ColtranePatricia ArquetteEthan HawkeThe life of Mason, from early childhood to his arrival at college. An amazing achievement in film making, Boyhood is a story filmed over 12 years following the childhood of a boy named Mason. His life isn't extraordinary, but its the realism that generates most of the interest, as the actual story isn't the greatest. Its serviceable, but it seems like it could have done even more. For what it is though, it is a great film with convincing performances and a realistic story that is worth at least one viewing.
- DirectorJames GunnStarsChris PrattVin DieselBradley CooperA group of intergalactic criminals must pull together to stop a fanatical warrior with plans to purge the universe.Nearly every other film on this list is a serious drama filled with emotion and intensity, however Guardians Of The Galaxy is a fun 2 hour ride that manages to entertain and amaze all viewers. Truly one of the best new sci-fi films in a long time, this is an incredibly fun film that deserves mention as one of the best in a year of greats.
- DirectorBong Joon HoStarsChris EvansJamie BellTilda SwintonIn a future where a failed climate change experiment has killed all life except for the survivors who boarded the Snowpiercer (a train that travels around the globe), a new class system emerges. This film tells a very original and unique story that features great acting, a very cool style, and excellent action to go along with a thought provoking idea. A well done film that went from a sleeper hit to a pretty well known film, Snowpiercer is truly a great film.
- DirectorWes AndersonStarsRalph FiennesF. Murray AbrahamMathieu AmalricA writer encounters the owner of an aging high-class hotel, who tells him of his early years serving as a lobby boy in the hotel's glorious years under an exceptional concierge. One of the most unique films of the year, The Grand Budapest Hotel is a colorful, quirky, and fun film that manages to combine hilarious humor with a silly but good premise that is perfectly paced and never feels forced. Truly more than a simple comedy, this is a well made film with tons of thought and effort put into it that will undoubtedly be appreciated for a long time.
- DirectorMorten TyldumStarsBenedict CumberbatchKeira KnightleyMatthew GoodeDuring World War II, the English mathematical genius Alan Turing tries to crack the German Enigma code with help from fellow mathematicians while attempting to come to terms with his troubled private life.Managing to find its way into the top ten is a film I was greatly looking forward to: "The Imitation Game"
