Nigerian Directors to Watch Out For
I've, of recent, being a Nigerian, who loves movies, and Hollywood productions (a lot) (who doesn't, really?), come to smile at specific movies out of the Nollywood industry (either stand-alones, or collaborations, or affiliations), and dare I notice recycled names whenever the credits show "Directed By". So, I've made a list of these names here. They bring hope to a movie industry that I was quickly, very quickly, writing off....and you may (WILL!) buy into this hope once you're done going through the list (especially if you're Nigerian). <ignore the excessive use of parentheses> Here Goes...

Biyi Bandele was born on 13 October 1967 in Kafanchan, Nigeria. He was a director and writer, known for Half of a Yellow Sun (2013), Fifty (2015) and Elesin Oba: The King's Horseman (2022). One of a new generation of Nigerian film Directors taking the magic of ‘Nollywood’ to the wider world. With his multi-disciplinary approach to film-making, his relentless creative drive and an uncanny sense of artistic style, Obi has also marked himself out as one of UK's contemporary directors.
He was at the final stages of being enrolled as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales when he abandoned legal practice to pursue his first love: film. However, he brings his stature as a lawyer and the attendant pragmatism to the chaotic world of film and productions.
Obi's debut novel, 'The Mirror Boy' is being published.
He lives in Notting Hill, London with his wife Amaka and their two children; D'Kachy and D'Richy.

Lonzo Nzekwe is a Nigerian/Canadian acclaimed film director and producer based in Toronto, Canada. He is the CEO of IronFlix Inc., a film production and online movie streaming platform with special focus on movies from Africa and the African diaspora.
Lonzo's debut feature film, Anchor Baby won 13 international awards including Best Film and Best Actress at the 2010 Harlem International Film Festival. The film later became an independent commercial success after its theatrical releases in Canada, UK, Nigeria and Ghana. Anchor Baby is streaming to a global audience on Netflix. His second film, Meet The Parents won the Best Short Film award at the 2016 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA). The film is streaming on IronFlix.com.
Lonzo is a self-taught filmmaker who learned the act of filmmaking by studying Behind The Scene videos of Hollywood films, and watching movies by renowned film directors. Prior to directing his first film, Lonzo studied the "2 Day Film School" by DOV Simmens and developed his editing skills by enrolling at Witz Training Institute in Toronto. Lonzo is also an acclaimed screenwriter and consultant in the film and television industry.
In 2013, Lonzo co-founded the first black-owned 24-hour Canadian television network, FEVA TV. After serving as FEVA's CEO from its inception, Lonzo resigned from the network in 2015 to focus his talent on his first love, film production. In April 2015, Lonzo founded IronFlix Inc., a film production and distribution company based in Ajax, Ontario, Canada.
In September 2023, Lonzo's latest feature film, Orah, was selected to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), in the Industry Selects program. Kenneth Gyang has gained international recognition as one of a younger generation of savvy Nigerian filmmakers. His works have appeared at the New York African Film Festival, the Pan African Film Festival, Carthage Film Festival, Cascade Festival of African Films and the Africa International Film Festival.
He received a grant from the Hubert Bals Fund to produce the postmodernist low-budget dark comedy Confusion Na Wa, winning the Jury Prize at the Pan African Festival in LA and Best Film at the African Movie Academy Awards. The Lost Cafe, his second feature, won the Golden Palm Award for Narrative Feature at the Mexico International Film Festival. The film was also the Audience Prize winner at Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) in Nigeria.
Apart from making independent cinema, Kenneth has worked in the continent's mainstream, directing some of the most successful Netflix Originals from Nigeria. Oloture, his third feature, premiered at Carthage Film Festival before becoming Nigeria's first breakout film on Netflix followed by the more successful series Blood Sisters, and recently Far From Home. His latest features THIS IS LAGOS and Mojisola were Official Selections at the 2023 Africa International Film Festival and the 2024 Pan African Film Festival. Both features were produced with Nigerian independent company Cinema Kpatakpata, a Film Collective he co-founded.
Kenneth has worked with the BBC and was an AFS Fellow at University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts. He has been selected for the Berlinale Talent Campus, Durban FilmMart and Rotterdam Film Lab. His current project, El Dorado Road, has undergone development at Ouaga Film Lab and EAVE Producers Workshop.

Tunde Kelani holds a Diploma in the Art and Technique of Filmmaking from the London International Film School, London. After many years in the Nigerian Film Industry as a Cinematographer, he now manages Mainframe Film & Television Productions, an outfit formed to document Nigeria's rich culture.
Tunde Kelani has worked on most feature films produced in the country in his capacity as a Cinematographer. Some of 16mm feature films include: Anikura; Ogun Ajaye; Iya Ni Wura; Taxi Driver; Iwa and Fopomoyo. In the area of video productions, he has to his credit award-winning feature videos: Ti Oluwa Nile; Ayo Ni Mo Fe; Koseegbe and Oleku.
An advocate of 'Alternative Technology' in motion picture production in Africa, Tunde Kelani has successfully produced and directed two digital features,Saworoide, Thunderbolt. He also completed work one of his latest digital films 'Agogo-eewo' shot on widescreen digitally on Dvcam. In addition to the M-net short features films, 'Twins of the Rainforest','A Place Called Home' and 'Barber's Wisdom' (35MM) , he also photographed, produced and directed a short feature in 16mm 'The White Handkerchief' in the same series. He has since added The Campus Queen' Abeni and The Narrow Path, the first set of works to probe further the possibilities of advanced digital filmmaking.
He recently added a new film Arugba which has just concluded free, open-air community screenings in 57 local government and development council areas of Lagos State in Nigeria. Tunde Kelani uses the Mobile Cinema Project, designed to take information and entertainment to the grassroot.

In a career spanning more than four decades, TK specializes in producing movies that promote Nigeria's rich cultural heritage and have a root in documentation, archiving, education, entertainment and promotion of the culture.
He is also known for his love of adaptation of literary material into movies as most of his works have followed that style of filmmaking including Ko se Gbe, Oleku, Thunder Bolt, The Narrow Path, White handkerchief, Maami and Dazzling Mirage.
At an early age, he was sent to Abeokuta to live with his grandparents. The rich Yoruba culture and tradition he experienced in his early years, coupled with the experience he garnered at the London Film School where he studied the art of filmmaking, prepared him for what he is doing today.
