My Favorite 70s Horror Movies, Part One (1970-74)
A list of my personal favorite horror movies of the 70s, Part One, in chronological, alphabetized order! (Please note: the release years are IMDB's and may vary according to other sources.) I also added comments throughout, so let me know what you think- or if you think I should have included something that isn't here! (Update: Starting with #116, I added many other selections as recommended by a variety of readers. So as to not interrupt the flow of my main list, I simply tacked them on at the end, in no particular order, as suggestions came in.) Look for Part 2 (75-79) in the next few weeks!

Kier isn't so sure, in this take on the witch trials of the Salem era, but set in Austria. Rated "V" for violence, according to the ads!

Give this sapphic vamp tale a shot. It's from Hammer studios and directed by the great Roy Ward Baker ("Asylum," "The Vault of Horror"). It stars horror great Peter Cushing, and super sexy Ingrid Pitt and Madeline Smith. One of my all-time fave vampire flicks, by far. Would make for a great double bill with "Blood and Roses." (Both were inspired by the short story "Carmilla.")

Keep an eye out for a cameo from horror icon Caroline Munro ("Maniac").
- निर्देशक Mario Bava स्टार्स Claudine AugerLuigi PistilliClaudio CamasoThe murder of a wealthy countess triggers a chain reaction of brutal killings in the surrounding bay area as several unscrupulous characters try to seize her large estate.Aka "Twitch of the Death Nerve," this fear flick from Italian maestro Mario Bava is oft-cited as an inspiration for the first two "Friday the 13th" flicks, which copy some of the kills here. (There are, of course, thirteen kills in all.) The ending is completely bonkers, and it has that inimitable Bava style to spare. If you're a slasher movie fan, you owe it to yourself to see this for completion's sake, as it sets the template for much to come.

Beautiful film.

Grahame plays the sadistic woman in charge of an orphanage a teen is sent to, who has potetentially bigger problems from a stalker who killed her mother.

Only one problem -- soon cats develop a taste for human flesh, and tabbies are tearing out throats all over town.Speaking of cats, this inept midnight movie fave from cult fave Ted V. Mikels (of "Blood Orgy of the She-Devils" and proto-"Charlie's Angels" flick "The Doll Squad" fame) is about a cat food company who decide to keep production costs down by using a secret ingredient: dead bodies from the local graveyard! One problem: it causes local kitties to become bloodthirsty beasts out for human flesh! Definitely of the "so bad it's good" MST3000 variety.

Keep an eye out for a young Lesley-Anne Down, then-future soap royalty.

Feminist writer Camille Paglia was a big fan!

Hammer regular Ralph Bates does the honors as the Dr, with two-time Bond girl, the sexy Martine Bestwicke (see also "Prehistoric Women" and "One Million Years BC") as lady Hyde. this is primo thesis material in-the-making for all you college students out there!

What more do you need to know? Typically found on DVD with the perfect double feature, "The Thing with Two Heads," in which a black man's head is grafted onto a racist white man's body, because why not? Needless to say, lots of silly fun ensues.

If that doesn't make you want to watch, I'm not sure what will.
- निर्देशक Jimmy Sangster स्टार्स Barbara JeffordRalph BatesSuzanna LeighIn 1830, forty years to the day since the last manifestation of their dreaded vampirism, the Karnstein heirs use the blood of an innocent to bring forth the evil that is the beautiful Mircalla - or as she was in 1710, Carmilla.The second film in the so-called Karnstein Trilogy after the aforementioned "Vampire Lovers" (#9), this was also inspired somewhat by "Carmilla," but is campier than its predecessor, so if you prefer your Hammer horror a little sillier, then this is for you. Sexy Yutte Stensgaard ("Scream and Scream Again") plays the vamp here, with the also aforementioned Ralph Bates in the second male lead.
