TV-Shows About Food, Take-Aways, Restaurants, Cooking Recipes and the Supply Chain
As I watched BBC's "Billion Dollar Chicken Shop," I wondered if there were other similar TV-series. As per usual Google wasn't helpful so I will attempt to make a list in this category. Will keep updating as I find more titles. (This is besides what you can find on youtube or Gordon Ramsay stuff, Christ!).

- StarsGeorge MotzTodd McIlweeSef GonzalezHamburger expert George Motz travels the country in search of the greatest hamburgers in the United States.I don't usually like American tv-series about food. The moment I hear loud music and see advert-style fast images, I just sigh as I am not a child who needs to be dazzled anymore. "Burger Land" was quite respectful in that they didn't over do it. George Motz (the presenter) is a very decent guy and knows his stuff (he made "Hamburger America" documentary back in 2004). Would be good if Motz came to Europe for a sequel.
- StarRalf LittleA look behind the scenes at popular fast food restaurant chain KFC.Very strange to see this on BBC as people like me might construe that as advertising for a private company which BBC is not supposed to do, as it is funded by public money (so no advertising). That aside, it's a really good 3 part tv-series. Loved it to bits, especially the Denton Rock KFC staff, Beth, who is so full of life. You also get to see how they prepare the chicken, surprise inspections, hiring and expanding the empire. Sadly they don't tell you what the secret recipe is!
- StarVas BlackwoodNina Roe a young fourteen year old girl, with a mother who's crazy about religion, and eleven siblings. Nina is absolutely obsessed with fried chicken. With the help of her friends from squirrel mafia they open the fried chicken shop. Along the way she learns valuable lessons such as "fried chicken is the secret of life".I remember watching Big Brother on Channel4 and then they stopped doing it due to funding issues I guess. This "Fried Chicken Shop" series was sort of a mini replacement i.e. filming real people (no scripts) in a live environment. I think they did a good job capturing that London life, including the locals, a transvestite and a bit of drama too. The shop itself is a real one, Rooster's Spot (140, Clapham High Street, London). I asked Channel4 if they'd do an update but it's not in the books.
- 30 years Domino's Pizza has been in the UK. Documentary style is done similar to "super factory".A very fun to watch Channel4 documentary on chain pizza shop Dominos. Besides showing you the life of its workers, you get to see a few elite pizza makers compete for fastest pizza maker in the UK.
- StarsSandi ToksvigDeborah Sugg RyanChris NorthFour-part series on businesses that have boomed despite tough economic times. The first episode of a 5 episode TV-series is entitled "Coffee Shop Hot Spots." It explores the giants of the coffee business (Starbucks, Costa, Nero), how they came to the UK, sourcing, making the perfect cuppa pricing and the expansion of the empire.
- An East End boozer has been rigged with cameras to see what men say when women aren't around and they're not on their best behaviour, for this fresh, funny documentary about pub cultureIt's a stinker which is weird for something commissioned by UK's famous Channel4. The docu just shows you drunk men in their pubs. A lot of gibberish. :-(
- DirectorErik Greenberg AnjouStarsSteve AuerbachAdam CaslowAlan DershowitzA look at the history of delicatessens in the United States.Jewish delis in New-York. A full hour and a half on this traditional American delicatessen industry - a bit like coming to the UK and expecting a "Fish N Chip" shop or "Cornish Pasty" shop.
- DirectorGeorge MotzStarsJohn BrandcampPaul DuberekBonnie EckreA look at the richness of America's hamburger tapestry. The documentary which preceded the tv-series "Burger Land." There is no George Motz voice and the burger shop owners do all the talking. Very textural as you get so many diverse accents and their burger-style changes all the time.
- 2003– 43mTV-PGTV Episode7.3 (12)StarTyler MathisenCNBC cameras go behind the scenes at your local big box market, Whole Foods, and fading mom-and-pop stores to find out what the supermarket industry knows about you -- and what you don't know about them.I love a good supermarket/grocery documentary. It is very relateable.
- StarAdam RichmanAmazing eats is a tv series of a proffesional food eater that goes around the united states and eats at the most famous places that the locals eat at. Each episode have its own themeMuch better than Man Vs Food. It is packed with energy and enthusiasm. I love this presenter. Marry me!
- StarsAnthony BourdainTom VitaleDavid Scott HollowayAnthony Bourdain visits countries, delving into their political issues as well as indigenous food and culture.I have a 50/50 liking to this CNN-backed series but Anthony did his best to focus on the people and their food, rather than politics. But CNN forced it on him towards last 2 series, when Trump was elected. Nevertheless, RIP Anthony Bourdain.
- StarsAndrew ZimmernTim MikeskaBill EsparzaHost Andrew Zimmern explores various cultures through their cuisines. Not to my liking.
- StarsAdam RichmanCasey WebbGladys KnightHost Adam Richman (and subsequently Casey Webb) travels around the U.S., taking on a variety of local eating challenges involving meal size, spiciness and other daunting factors. Not to my liking.
- StarsAntonio CarluccioGennaro ContaldoExcellently produced BBC food travel documentary. Please watch in HD. Very fun to watch the two hosts argue because one comes from rich part of Italy (Antonio Carluccio) and the second comes from a poorer/difficult background (Gennaro Contaldo... "Why am cooking sooo goood!").
Trip across Italy, a very beautiful country with very beautiful people. Sadly, RIP Antonio Carluccio. - StarsKate QuiltonMatt TebbuttJimmy DohertyThe team explore food myths from a neutral point of view, culminating in a summary based on scientific research.Everything you wanted to know about your favourite food items - where they come from, how they are made, are they safe and sustainable... Jim Doherty is a really good presenter. He has a farming background.
- StarsMassimo BotturaFrancis MallmannMagnus NilssonChef's Table goes inside the lives and kitchens of six of the world's most renowned international chefs. Each episode focuses on a single chef and their unique look at their lives, talents and passion from their piece of culinary heaven. Was good at start but now Netflix wants to inject feminism in everything. So you have more female chefs with excruciatingly boring life stories. Also chefs who are people of colour. Lots of skipable content in 2019. It is forced on the viewer because of current times. It is not natural (i.e. something we asked for). I predict failure.
- StarsLatif NasserSonny NguyenCasey CoxRotten dives deep into the food production underworld to expose the corruption, waste and real dangers behind your everyday eating habits.Great Netflix series on how popular food items have a dark & rotten supply chain. Sometimes helped by Obama government policies such as catch-sharing in fisheries or helped by Chinese government, such as using free prison labour to peel garlic sold in the US.
- StarsDavid ChangPeter MeehanAziz AnsariChef David Chang travels around the world tasting food from different cultures. It is very watchable Netflix series on popular types of cuisines (fried chicken, roast meat, ...). However towards the end they invite a pompous, disgusting, Korean female comedian and it ruins the last episodes. SJWs from Munchies/ZPZ have managed to ruin this Netflix foody show by injecting foul language and race into it. I can imagine if BBC did the same series, they would cut out the disgusting parts which ruffle feathers.
- StarMichael PollanAs he tries his hand at baking, brewing and braising, acclaimed food writer Michael Pollan explores how cooking transforms food and shapes our world.Netflix continues to cash in on making visually spectacular food series. Only 4 episodes and which I had to watch twice over to get the point. I was getting too distracted the first time watching. Series explores cooking methods around the world: using fire, water, air and earth.
- DirectorsAndy HeathcoteHeike BachelierStarStephen HookOfficial Selection of Sundance Film Festival. A heart warming, tearjerker of a movie about the incredible bonds between man, animal and countryside.Quiet docu-movie of a man who loves to rear cattle. Please sit back, relax and enjoy.
- DirectorFranck RibièreStarsJacques AbbatucciMario de Beni ArrigoniMarcos BassiGourmet road trip looking for the best steak in the world. Breeders, farmers, butchers, cooks, historians and business men all around the world (France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Belgium, UK,USA, Canada, Japan, Argentina, Brazil) help us understand the (r)evolution taking place right now and the challenges ahead. It is ok. I am not into cooking beef but I can see many who would want to know the supply chain of this food item.
- DirectorMatthew NicholsonStarsMatthew McNultyJohn BanzhafMark BorkowskiThe documentary traced the fast food company's journey from Route 66 diner to planet-conquering giant.Posssibly a response to the well-made KFC 3-part documentary, "Billion Dollar Chicken Shop" or the series on Domino's Pizza. It is ok. I love fast-food, not that I eat there but there is the appeal. If you come out of a night club and have the munchies, you know it's there.
- DirectorsDarius G LawsNick WoolgarStarsCharles HeathDarius G LawsGavin LeeksIn the run up to the Annual Flower & Produce Show in Capel St Mary, some of the most passionate growers around prepare their crops to see just who can grow the biggest pumpkin. Digging for Victory is the charming story of a Suffolk village allotment and the dedicated growers, enthusiasts and contenders who tend to their fruit and vegetables. With a diverse cast of characters and a quirky yet affectionate style, this feature length documentary debut by Suffolk-born filmmakers Darius G Laws & Nick Woolgar is a warm and nostalgic look at this most British of past-times. A feel-good film guaranteed to entertain and inspire.Competitive vegetable growing.
- StarsHeston BlumenthalKyle ConnaughtonChris YoungThree star Michelin award winning chef Heston Blumenthal is chef/owner of the Fat Duck Restaurant in Bray, England. The restaurant was given the distinction of best restaurant in the world in 2005. He uses whatever he can at his disposal to make the best food he can, often using what most would consider molecular gastronomy to achieve his goal. He tries to create what he considers the perfect version of several classic dishes that are favorites within Britain with the aim of having the home British cook be able to re-create these dishes.Amazing! Amazing! Anything by Heston Blumenthal is a great watch but this is first series of his that I watched so it has this special moment status. I was told that he did something before "Search for Perfection" but it was too boringly academic. So he changed.
- StarsHeston BlumenthalJames 'Jocky' PetrieKyle ConnaughtonMichelin three-star chef Heston Blumenthal reinvents historical cuisine with modern sensibilities, crafting inventive, memorable feasts for guests who are unaware of what dining experience awaits them. This is more than Heston Blumenthal casting his magic on a bunch of celebrity diners. It is a travel through time and him giving his own twist on ancient classics. I watch this series every Winter (November/Decemebr) because it has become a classic in my life. Much like watching Home Alone and Die Hard 2 at xmas.
