Noirish Horror or Horror Noir : Film Noir Horror or Neo Noir Horror Movies

The combination of suspense/thriller plot, with the supernatural element of the Satanist cult, and the visual style, and the production factors of the film (cheap B-picture filmed in the studio, relying on shadows over budget, etc.), and the pessimistic and cynical mood of the film... "The Seventh Victim" is probably the purest horror-noir cross-over I have found so far. This movie is from Producer Val Lewton, who is a master of this genre, there are multiple films of his on our list.

Called by many to be the First Film Noir. This movie inspired many in both the genres, i.e. Noir and Horror. This is one of the finest use of Dream horror in a noir movie.

The photography by Nicholas Musuraca was beautiful moment by moment. He photographed Cat People, The Spiral Staircase, Out of the Past and The Jack Benny Show! The dream sequences were vivid and entertaining.

With Silence of the Lambs comes some much needed recognition for the horror(or horror noir) genre. It is a first-rate production all around. It boasts a witty and suspenseful script based on the Thomas Harris novel, full of great lines. It has marvelous direction from Demme. Demme creates suspense very well throughout and uses some great directorial shots such as the twin frames of Clarice ringing a doorbell and the FBI men breaking into a home. The two lead actors won oscars for their performances...each deserved.

A Very atmospheric horror thriller! A man movies into the ancestral mansion where his father and grandfather had been murdered years earlier. Soon he hers the cries of a ghost woman who seems intent on his death!

Bees Saal Baad is very reminiscent of Universal's 1930s horror film or perhaps Val Lewton's moody horrors of the 1940s. Filmed in black and white the whole film has an effectively eerie quality.

After suffering a head injury during the Blitz, an actor comes to believe himself to be the Brighton Strangler, the murderer he was playing onstage.

Paranoia of the unseen is a powerful way to tell a horror story without ever giving away any shock cuts or showing the boogeyman. While it becomes abundantly clear early on that this is a story of witchcraft of the worst kind, the only time some of it makes its way in front of the camera is in the extremely stylized ritual/rape scene, and even then, since Rosemary is having what might be the worst nightmare of her life, one isn't quite sure of what is happening, and of course, in the end, when all is revealed in a comic yet horrific way.

"Son of Dracula" succeeds on many counts, (no pun intended) by virtue of its absolutely serious approach towards its material. Unlike other Universal horrors of this period, with their unfunny comedy relief antics, (bumbling, pop eyed police inspectors, burgomasters etc.) director Siodmak wisely eschews such sch-tick, and foreshadows the tragic ending of the story, with an increasingly oppressive sense of doom. In other words, unity of mood.

Noirish? Very Noirish.

The real driving force that makes Jacob's Ladder such a success is its eeriness. This is a horror film after all, both on psychological and more apparent supernatural levels. Lyne continually and disconcertingly pulls the rug from beneath not only Jacob, but the audience as well, yet manages to never make a viewer feel lost, instead producing an eagerness to solve the "mystery" while you root for Jacob.

This noir may not be the best remembered film from the era, but it features a great mystery plot, the common noir atmosphere and some good performances from its lesser known cast members. Robert Siodmak, the talented director behind the mystery/horror classic 'The Spiral Staircase' directed this film two years earlier than the aforementioned film, and shows a real flair for creating a dark and brooding atmosphere as well as creating a plot that both intrigues and fascinates the viewer.

Rain Phobia?

While it fails to be as engaging or as scary as it should, this appears to have been a very influential movie ... it takes the genre of the gritty cop thriller and combines it with horror and science fiction elements to create an atmosphere that was later continued in movies like "Aliens" or "Predator". The pacing and the soundtrack of this movie practically invented a whole new genre that went on throughout the eighties. Even the idea of the distorted POV shots of the 'Wolfen' were used again in "Predator", and "Predator 2" moved the action back to a big city to create a very similar movie to this.

The reason it was so influential was because of the director, Michael Wadleigh, who was certainly extremely talented. It's a damn shame he didn't make more feature films as no doubt they would have been great. Everyone else involved in the movie does a reasonably good job -- Albert Finney gives a laid-back, worn-out performance which is really what the part called for. The best performance probably comes from Edward James Olmos, who appeared a couple of years later in the similarly noir-ish science fiction movie "Blade Runner".

Use of Killer's PointOfView shots in the stalking scenes. Why is it that this film isn't cited as the first movie to use this technique, which became such a staple in horror films after Halloween, which borrowed the technique from Black Christmas (generally cited as the first)???
