The novel's protagonist, who has an unusual interest in learning famous people's last words. He goes to the boarding school Culver Creek in search of his own "Great Perhaps". Tall and skinny, his friends at Culver ironically nickname him "Pudge". He is sexually and emotionally attracted to Alaska Young, who for most of the novel has a mixed relationship, mostly not returning his feelings. He is frequently compared to Holden Caulfield of J.D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye.

Kaya Scodelario as Alaska Young

The wild, moody, unpredictable, beautiful and enigmatic girl who captures Miles' attention and heart. She acts as a confidante to her friends, frequently assisting them in personal matters, as well as dealing in cigarettes and alcohol. Alaska is very mysterious never disclosing too much information about herself, refusing to answer "who, what, when or why questions" when the mood strikes her, often sending Miles into near insanity. A strong feminist, Alaska often lectures the boys on how women should be treated and is very opinionated. Her most treasured possession is her "life library" a collection of books in her bedroom which she has yet to read.

Josh Hutcherson as Chip 'the Colonel' Martin

Five feet tall but "built like Adonis", he is Alaska's best friend and Miles' roommate. His nickname, the Colonel, comes from his being the strategic mastermind behind the schemes that Alaska concocts. Coming from a poor background, he is obsessed with loyalty and honor, especially towards his beloved mother Dolores who lives in a trailer.

Ki Hong Lee as Takumi Hikohito

Takumi is a shy individual and part of the Colonel’s group of friends. Close with the Colonel and Alaska, he's Japanese and a few inches taller than the Colonel suggesting that he is fairly short in stature. Like the Colonel, Takumi understands Alaska and her ever changing mood swings, helping Miles to understand her and to not take it too personally. Takumi aids Alaska and the Colonel in their pranks at the Creek, donning his fox hat whilst doing mischievous things because "no one can catch the *beep* Although he has a playful side, Takumi is a very mysterious character not disclosing much information about himself making him hard to read emotionally.

Hailee Steinfeld as Lara Buterskaya

Lara is a Romanian exchange student and a recent addition to Culver Creek. She has a heavy Romanian accent though it only seems to be apparent when pronouncing certain letters, mainly vowels which Miles notes when speaking to her. Described as "cute" and "beautiful" by Miles, she has lazy brown curls and dark eyes though pales in comparison to Alaska in the eyes of Miles. She is close friends with Alaska, who sights her as "Pudge's future girlfriend" from the outset, something which Alaska attempts to make a reality.

Corbin Bernsen as The Eagle

The Eagle is the dean of students at Culver Creek, he enforces the discipline upon the students and many of the students dislike him as a result of this. Known for "the look of doom" he lives right across Culver Creek and is intimidating to the students who often do a double take when getting into mischief to make sure he isn't around. The Eagle is very strict on rules concerning alcohol and sex being known to tell students to "pack their bags" after catching them doing either offence. He does have a softer side however, having moments where he is shown to be emotive and kind. The Eagle also serves as the judge in the jury, which is where the non-expellable offences are dealt with.

Boyd Holbrook as Jake

Jake is Alaska’s boyfriend who lives in another town, and comes to visit Alaska every once in a while. Jake has blond hair down to his shoulders and dark stubble on his cheeks. According to Miles he looks like a catalog model and is described by Alaska as a "sensational lover". He has a southern accent and is seemingly kind and gentlemanly especially where Alaska is concerned. His girlfriend claims to love him deeply but is always flirting with other guys according to the Colonel, including Miles.

Mason Dye as Kevin

Kevin is a weekday warrior from a wealthy family and is the nemesis of the Colonel, Alaska and Miles. He dresses in preppy fashion though his hair is short blond and spiky with enough gel to make it look permanently wet. Kevin's hair is his "pride and joy" according to Alaska, suggesting his immense vanity. He pulls the initiating prank on Miles when he arrives at Culver Creek beginning the pranking war between the two groups which is believed to have started over the issue of two students Paul and Maya getting expelled.

Nicola Peltz as Sara

Sara is the Colonel’s girlfriend for the first few chapters until they break up after a useless argument. A weekday warrior she is from a good family, often lecturing the Colonel on his dress sense when meeting her parents. She has long, pale blond hair and resembles a movie star according to Miles. The Colonel is shown to truly have deep feelings for Sara, devastated after their breakup, although it is unclear how Sara truly feels about him. Sara is shown to be quite a jealous character despite her beauty however feeling somewhat inferior to the Colonel's best friend Alaska Young.

Marya is one of two students who are not seen exactly in the story, but have a big role to play in the main storyline. They had both been kicked out the semester before Miles came to Culver Creek after being caught together in bed, drinking and smoking which is a major offence at Culver Creek. This story haunts many of the students at the Creek as Paul and Marya came from either faction, Marya a boarder and Paul a weekday warrior. The weekday warrior's, Kevin in particular, are very interested in who exactly snitched on Paul and Marya to get them kicked out of the Creek which is a major plot point of the story.
