When a guzzled prospector stumbles on the treasure of gold coins hidden by Mexican emperor Santa Ana, a myriad of malefactors, both outlaws and outwardly upstanding citizens resort to subterfuge and murder to obtain it.

Upon the disappearance of wealthy Penny Sanderson, stage driver Jack Mahoney is arrested by Sheriff Jeff Clinton for her kidnapping. When Penny cannot be found, Jack is then accused of murder and sentenced to hang. A longtime acquaintance of Penny's, Steve Rollins, whose alter ego is The Durango Kid, comes to Jack's aid. Steve reveals that when Penny was a child, The Durango Kid united her feuding grandfathers and secured the young girl's right to a rich gold mine. In the present, upon further investigation, The Durango Kid learns that Penny's guardians, Emmet and Ella Sanderson, who seem heartbroken by Penny's disappearance have, in reality, made Penny's life with them a misery. The Durango Kid then locates Penny in time to prevent Jack's hanging and learns that she has hidden in fear for her life. Steve and his friend, Smiley Burnette, unravel the Sandersons' plot to kill Penny for her inheritance and Jack is ultimately freed.

When Steve Holden plus his alter ego, the Durango Kid, is reunited with his old Texas Ranger saddlemate Jack Mahoney, he finds his former friend has become greedy and power hungry.

Carson and Drake discover a cave of gold that belongs to the Indians who are unaware of it, so they try to foment a war that will wipe out the Native Americans and claim the yellow metal.

Steve Martin (Charles Starrett) is sent to Wild River to recover stolen gold and finds the town is being terrorized by The Hawk (Clayton Moore) and his outlaw gang. The Hawk attempts to murder Sheriff Jack Mahoney (Jock Mahoney) and is captured and jailed. Steve helps the Hawk break jail and thus makes contact with the bandit gang. He sends a bungling photographer, Smiley Burnette (Smiley Burnette), to warn the sheriff that the gang plan to rob the express office.

The Durango Kid tries to help a man framed for murder and stop a range war between sheepmen and cattlemen.

Utilizing his past as a former outlaw and his secret identity as the Durango Kid, postal inspector Steve Baldwin goes undercover to arrest the three highwayman who murdered lovable old driver Old Henry.

Treasury agent Steve Ransom (Charles Starrett) is given the mission of unmasking Jonathan Cole (Fred Sears), head of a gang of smugglers operating near the Mexico/Texas border which is not within the length of three eastern seaboard states of Amarillo but Columbia title writers were never good at geography. In spite of Steve's warnings, his bumbling pal Smiley (Smiley Burnette) does some lone-wolf sleuthing on the Cole ranch and is taken prisoner just as Steve is getting the evidence he needs against Cole.

Johnny is a young Indian boy who falls heir to thousands of wild horses when his adoptive white father is murdered by henchmen of the town's leading citizen, Grat Hanlon. With the aid of his protector Steve Reynolds, he acquires an Army contract to deliver 300 horses a month to the cavalry. Hanlon, desiring the contract himself, and his men set out to keep the contract from being fulfilled.

A man's pursuit of some wanted criminals is hindered by the interference of a crooked judge.

Hatching a scheme to sell rifles to the Indians as a protection against the white settlers, Jim Haverly (Monte Blue) works both sides against the middle by having his henchmen masquerade as Indians and raid the settlers. With the ranchers preparing for retribution against the Indians, Haverly's plan is working well until Steve Reynolds/The Durango Kid (Charles Starrett) shows up and, with the aid of a young white boy (Tommy Ivo) and his young Indian friend (Don Reynolds), and his bumbling sidekick Smiley (Smiley Burnette), begins the process of uncovering the actual villains.

Steve Drake/The Durango Kid is commissioned by the Army to track down a band of desperado's who have escaped from the stockade at Fort Savage. The gang is led by ex-army Captain Craydon who is embittered as he blames the Army for his young son's death. A pompous young Lieutenant, son of the fort commander Colonel Sutter, is placed in charge of the bandit-chasing group that includes Steve, his pal Smiley and an old scout known as Old Cuss. His conceit and contempt of the civilians nearly leads to disaster.

Steve Forsythe/The Durango Kid (Charles Starrett) is trailing holdup man Sam Barton (Lee Morgan) from Texas, but Barton is found first by hotel owner Ace Conley (Jim Bannon) who has his henchmen kill Barton and hide the 1000 $20 gold pieces he has stolen in an abandoned mine. Before Steve and the local sheriff, Tom Chapman (Peter Thompson), can get together on a plan, Conley has terrorized Pop Willard (Edgar Dearing), a miner, into boasting of his "gold strike" to divert attention from Conley's plan of melting the gold pieces into nuggets which he can bring into town legitimately. He needs a blacksmith to melt the gold and Smiley (Smiley Burnette), the town blacksmith, is kidnapped to handle that chore.

Steve Carson, a former Texas Ranger Captain, shoots a fleeing hold-up bandit and is framed on a murder charge. He escapes with the help of his pal Smiley and they hire out as cowhands on a ranch owned by Toni Eaton. Steve, as the Durango Kid, learns that Buck Prescott has been fleecing the local ranchers by paying low prices for their cattle that have been stampeded by his henchmen. But he has no proof and his alter ego Steve is still wanted on the murder charge.

Luke Atkins and Captain Dan Saunders are ranchers in Piute Valley and are at odds with each other over a dam that Atkins is constructing to help the valley people. Their feud does nothing to help the romance of Saunders' son, Sheriff Ron Saunders and Atkins' daughter, Susan . The opposition to the dam that Saunders has led, makes him the prime suspect when the banker who is going to lend Atkins the money for the project is murdered, and Sheriff Saunders is forced to arrest his father. But Steve Brandon, mostly in his guise as the Durango Kid, does a bit of snooping and begins to suspect that the local storekeeper has an interest in more than just selling groceries.

Steve Lawton, aka The Durango Kid, U.S. Army undercover man, and his assistant Smiley, are sent to Santa Fe by Army investigator Copeland to deliver a gold shipment and check on the strange disappearance of Captain Tanner from Fort Navajo. Copeland is murdered by Forsythe, a fake government agent,who orders Krag Benson and his other henchmen to ambush Steve and Smiley and steal the gold shipment. Steve and Smiley escape the trap and reach Santa Fe, where they learn that Tanner's wife Alice is being held hostage by Forsythe and his gang.

When a rancher, part of whose property is in Indian territory, is murdered and robbed of a silver ring of Indian origin, the new Indian Agent, Steve Blake (Charles Starrett) investigates. He finds that similar murders and robberies have taken place, one victim being the rancher father of Janet Clayton (Kay Buckley). Ex-Indian Agent Randolph (Edgar Dearing), responsible for the killings, frames Steve for one of the killings and he is jailed. His pal, Smiley (Smiley Burnette), a correspondence school detective, trails Dike but is captured. Steve breaks jail and, in his guise as the Durango Kid, begins to bring the villains to justice.

The Durango Kid exposes a gang making attacks on a band of surveyors laying a new railway line.

Steve, Smiley, and the Sheriff come to a ghost town looking for missing gold. In flashback, Steve tells the story of Bill Donner who doublecrossed his partners to get the gold. Donner, now blind and in jail, refuses to tell where the gold is hidden.

Stanton, backed by the citizen's peace patrol making him the only armed man in town but actually the head of a gang of crooks, has Julia Beck elected mayor as an honest front for his activities. Her father, Walt Beck, sends for Steve Drake/The Durango Kid to help fight Stanton, but Stanton has Beck killed and Durango is blamed. The Texas Dynamo, a gunman sent for by Stanton, dies on the trail and Steve rides into town posing as the Texas outlaw. He convinces Julia of Stanton's double-crossing use of the peace patrol, but not before Stanton also frames her brother, Bill Beck, for a robbery.

Steve 'The Durango Kid' Norman is accused of a crime he didn't commit. With the help of his old friend Smiley Burnette Steve breaks jail to find the real culprits. The sneaky Ruth Dorn is Steve's main suspect.

Widow Mahoney, the best cook in town and hotel proprietor , along with her larcenous sons, is trying to take control of the town's water supply so she can acquire the valley ranchland cheaply.

Following the Civil War, the U.S. government sets out to find a gang opposing the construction of telegraph lines in the west. They suspect Braden, who had formed a guerrilla band and destroyed the telegraph service during the war. Government agent Steve Duncan, who also works undercover as The Durango Kid, starts to run down the gang with only a picture of Braden for a clue. Steve is ambushed by an outlaw and left for dead but is rescued by Smiley, who takes him to a trading post ran by a man named Miller. Steve recognizes Miller as Braden, who tells him he is being falsely accused of crimes actually committed by Sloper.

U.S. Marshal Steve Saunders, searching for the killer of a government surveyor, interrupts a gun battle between the feuding Grant and Webster families, who fell out when Chris Grant was killed and the Grants blame the Websters. Ellory Webster, blamed for the killing of Chris, ostensibly perishes when he is trapped in a barn fired by the Grants. Phineas Grant suspects that Ellory is still alive and hiding at the Rocking Moon ranch. Steve, in his guise as the Durango Kid, does some snooping and when the Grants and Websters start another battle, he and his sheriff friend Smiley Burnette take a hand. Steve arrests Duke Webster and Phineas who have conspired to wipe out both of their own families for the oil they have discovered.

Outlaws along the Texas-Mexican border are mysteriously disappearing without a trace, so the Durango Kid adopts a second fake outlaw identity to expose the scheme.
