- 21 titles
- DirectorWalter HillStarsRyan O'NealBruce DernIsabelle AdjaniA getaway driver becomes the latest assignment for a tenacious detective.A favorite of Quentin Tarantino, THE DRIVER was a box office dud and critical punching bag. But, Walter Hill's noir action film has heavily influenced everything from PULP FICTION to DRIVE. Ryan O'Neal, Bruce Dern, and Isabelle Adjani are cool as hell in this movie that literally gives us no names for the characters. If you haven't seen it, THE DRIVER is a cult classic that you should check out.
- DirectorNicolas Winding RefnStarsRyan GoslingCarey MulliganBryan CranstonA mysterious Hollywood action film stuntman gets in trouble with gangsters when he tries to help his neighbor's husband rob a pawn shop while serving as his getaway driver.Nicolas Winding Refn's 2011 indie drama is a magnificent slow burning neo-noir. It may not be the action-packed movie fans of FAST AND FURIOUS were led to believe by the poster and trailer, but this is one of the best films of the last ten years. With a thumping soundtrack and great turns by Albert Brooks, Ron Perlman, and Bryan Cranston, DRIVE is the movie that should be first associated with Ryan Gosling's career.
- DirectorsLouis LeterrierCorey YuenStarsJason StathamShu QiMatt SchulzeFrank Martin, who "transports" packages for unknown clients, is asked to move a package that soon begins moving, and complications arise.and all its sequels
Jason Statham is cool, no doubt about it. After his turns in Guy Ritchie's first few films, the bald Brit headlined this small film from Luc Besson that spawned two sequels, a television series, and now a prequel film. While Ed Skrein has a lot of cool himself, it will be hard to top Statham's opening drive in the first movie. - DirectorCraig LahiffStarsRussell CroweYûki KudôKenji IsomuraAfter a botched bank job, a gang takes hostage a Japanese girl on the run from an arranged marriage, and escapes. Their wheel man saves the girl from them and the two go on the run with cops, the gang and her psycho husband on their tail.It follows the adventures of an Australian getaway driver (Russell Crowe) and a Japanese runaway bride (Youki Kudoh) on a road trip as they are pursued by both criminals and the police.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsAnsel ElgortJon BernthalJon HammCoerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver must face the music when a doomed heist threatens his life, love, and freedom.
- DirectorArthur RipleyStarsRobert MitchumGene BarryJacques AubuchonA veteran comes home from the Korean War to the mountains and takes over the family moonshining business. He has to battle big-city gangsters who are trying to take over the business and the police who are trying to put him in prison. In this classic 1958 noir set in the world of illegal mountain moonshiners, Robert Mitchum plays a young vet working as a transporter — one of “those wild and reckless men, who transport illegal whisky from its source to its point of distribution,” using souped-up cars. This wasn’t a fanciful movie creation; it was an actual subculture. The film may not have the authentic details of those classic car movies that would start to come out a decade or so later, but Mitchum is, and will always be, the coolest cat onscreen. Give him a hot rod, and he’s suddenly cooler.
- DirectorsCharles GuggenheimJohn StixStarsSteve McQueenCrahan DentonDavid ClarkeA gang's plans for a St. Louis bank robbery are complicated when the sister of one of the thieves starts voicing her well-founded suspicions.
- DirectorMichael MannStarsAl PacinoRobert De NiroVal KilmerA group of high-end professional thieves start to feel the heat from the LAPD when they unknowingly leave a verbal clue at their latest heist.Within the stellar cast of Michael Mann's epic crime saga is Dennis Haysbert as the getaway driver hired to join the crew. He may not be the flashiest name on this list but he is definitely skilled behind the wheel and contributes to Robert De Niro's team.
- DirectorTony ScottStarsClive OwenGary OldmanJames BrownDecades ago, the legendary James Brown sold his soul to the devil for fame and fortune. Now he wishes to renegotiate. Hired to take Mr. Brown to a rendezvous with the devil, the driver soon finds himself entangled in fiendish plans. While not a feature film, THE HIRE is a series of short films from filmmakers like John Frankenheimer, Ang Lee, Wong Kar-wai, Guy Ritchie, Alejandro González Iñárritu, John Woo, Joe Carnahan, and Tony Scott. Starring Clive Owen as the nameless Driver, these films heavily influenced THE TRANSPORTER franchise. I would kill to see a full feature film version featuring Owen in the lead. I also defy you to find a better complete series of films out there.
- DirectorJohn FrankenheimerStarsRobert De NiroJean RenoNatascha McElhoneA freelancing former U.S. Intelligence Agent tries to track down a mysterious package that is wanted by the Irish and the Russians.
- DirectorDominic SenaStarsNicolas CageAngelina JolieGiovanni RibisiTo save his brother, ex-thief Memphis must steal 50 luxury cars in 3 days for a crime boss. He reunites his old crew, including his mentor Otto and ex-girlfriend Sway, while police track them.Dominic Sena's remake came right during the heydey of Nicolas Cage's work with Jerry Bruckheimer. The film may not be all that great, but Cage's performance makes this incredibly enjoyable as he and his crew run rampant all over Long Beach. The chase scenes are great but it really is Cage as Randall Raines as he brings his masterful skills out of retirement that make him one of the best drivers on this list.
- DirectorF. Gary GrayStarsDonald SutherlandMark WahlbergEdward NortonAfter being betrayed and left for dead in Italy, Charlie Croker and his team plan an elaborate gold heist against their former ally. One of two entries featuring Jason Statham on this list, the remake of THE ITALIAN JOB is the only film on this list that makes compact cars look badass. Everyone in America wanted a Mini Cooper after seeing this movie and with good reason. Handsome Rob is a cocky sonofabitch and one hell of a skilled motorist.
- DirectorArthur PennStarsWarren BeattyFaye DunawayMichael J. PollardBored waitress Bonnie Parker falls in love with an ex-con named Clyde Barrow and together they start a violent crime spree through the country, stealing cars and robbing banks.Arthur Penn's 1967 film is one of the best movies of all time. Controversial upon it's premiere due to the violence in the movie, BONNIE & CLYDE immortalizes the bank robbing duo while also introducing us to their crew, including driver C.W. Moss. Michael J. Pollard is great in his role as he becomes friends with the title characters and eventually contributes to their downfall.
- DirectorSam PeckinpahStarsSteve McQueenAli MacGrawBen JohnsonA recently-released ex-con and his loyal wife go on the run after a heist goes awry.Sam Peckinpah was a master of big screen violence. Steve McQueen is one of the coolest movie stars of all time. Combine the two with car chases and Ali McGraw and you get one of the best action movies ever. Stay away from the *beep* remake with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger and stick with the Walter Hill-scripted 1972 version.
- DirectorGeorge Tillman Jr.StarsDwayne JohnsonBilly Bob ThorntonMaggie GraceAn ex-con gets on a series of apparently unrelated killings. He gets tracked by a veteran cop with secrets of his own and an egocentric hit man.
- DirectorDon SiegelStarsWalter MatthauJoe Don BakerFelicia FarrA man, his wife and their friend stage a bloody bank robbery without realizing they are stealing from the Mob.
- DirectorsUlu GrosbardDustin HoffmanStarsDustin HoffmanTheresa RussellGary BuseyThe difficulties of a career burglar to reinsert himself after being released on parole.
- DirectorD.J. CarusoStarsVal KilmerVincent D'OnofrioAdam GoldbergAfter a tragic incident, a man drifts into a world populated by thugs and speed junkies.
- DirectorLes MayfieldStarsMartin LawrenceLuke WilsonPeter GreeneA former convict poses as a cop to retrieve a diamond he stole years ago.
- DirectorRaja GosnellStarsAlex D. LinzOlek KrupaRya KihlstedtAlex Pruitt, an 8-year-old boy living in Chicago, must fend off four international criminals who are seeking a top-secret microchip in his toy car.
- DirectorJohn HoughStarsPeter FondaSusan GeorgeAdam RoarkeDown-on-their-luck racers Larry and Deke steal from a supermarket manager to buy a car that will help them advance their racing chances. Their escape does not go as planned when Larry's one-night stand, Mary, tags along for the ride.Peter Fonda and Adam Roarke play two 0-to-100 holdup artists/racers who rob a huge supermarket, only to get saddled with the NASCAR groupie (Susan George) whom Fonda’s character bedded the night before. Speeding away from the cops in, first, a souped-up 68 Chevy Impala, and then a garish Dodge Challenger, the trio bicker and banter relentlessly. Meanwhile, the pissy, frustrated lawman (Kenneth Tobey) trying to coordinate the manhunt has to deal with abject incompetence and mind-boggling bureaucracy, as well as his own desire to relive his youth. There isn’t a single sane person in this movie, but the tremendous stunts, crossed with the film’s surprisingly easygoing atmosphere, have made this a car classic.
