Carroll was born in Manhattan and raised in Forest Hills, a heavily-Jewish community in New York City's borough of Queens. After graduating from high school in 1942, he joined the Merchant Marines and worked on ships in the Atlantic. In 1946, he enrolled at the University of Montana to study English; while there he became interested in theater. During one of the amateur productions, he met Nancy Fields; they married in 1951. He moved to Ireland where he continued his theatrical studies at the National University of Ireland. He was discovered during one of his college productions and was signed to appear at the Dublin Gate Theater. He worked in theater in Europe until 1954, when he returned to New York City. His attempts to land on Broadway failed, and he taught high school until 1958, when he finally landed an Off-Broadway production, "Ulysses in Nighttown". He followed that with a Broadway production that was directed by [[Burgess Meredith]], "God and Kate Murphy", in which he was both an understudy and an assistant stage manager. At the same time, he was getting attention on TV. He worked in a great many character roles throughout the 1960s. A pilot for "Those Were The Days", based on the English hit "Till Death Us Do Part", was first shot in 1968 but was rejected by the networks. In 1971 it was re-cast and re-shot at All in the Family (1971) and the rest is history.- Born in Ohio, Charlene graduated from Youngstown University, in the mid-1960s, where she married her first husband, poet Frank Polite. Following graduation, she acted in regional theater, including the Pittsburgh (PA) Playhouse, where she had a post-graduate scholarship. Later, she moved to San Francisco, CA to work at the American Conservatory Theater, formed by provocative stage director and Tony Award nominee William Ball, whom she met in Pittsburgh.
She divorced her first husband in the late 1960s and remarried, to actor Ramon Bieri (1929-2001). They lived in Northridge, in the San Fernando Valley. Following the end of her film career in 1976, she divorced Bieri, moved to San Diego, with her stepson, and acted again in regional theater.
In the late 1980s, her health declined. She moved back to Youngstown, Ohio, to be near the family of her first husband, where she died from complications of breast cancer.
Variously described as "a true child of the 1960s," "spiritual," "extravagant" and "eccentric" with a great sense of humor, she was a strikingly gorgeous red brunette who gave up her film career to devote her life raising her stepson. - Charles Krauthammer was born on 13 March 1950 in New York City, New York, USA. Best known for his work in slapstick comedy and detective whodunits, character actor Donald MacBride lent his serious, craggy mug and determined professionalism to scores of 30s and 40s crimers. Born in Brooklyn, he first appeared on the vaudeville and Broadway stages as a teenage singer in such shows as "George White's Scandals" and "Room Service." Taking a chance on Hollywood, he appeared in a few silents, then returned full time to films again in the 30s with a variety of interesting parts in over 100 comedies and dramas. These included the movie version of Room Service (1938) with the Marx Brothers, the flustered hotel manager in My Favorite Wife (1940), an ex-con and ringleader in High Sierra (1941) and an Irish politico in The Dark Horse (1946). However, his real prowess was playing by-the-book police inspectors and, while looking slightly less capable when at odds with a Charlie Chan, a Michael Shayne, or the Saint, he came off much more capable on his own in tracking down such hardened criminals as The Creeper. In the 50s he turned to TV as well, until his death in 1957.- Producer
