Every Christmas Carol Movie Ranked

The Muppets Christmas Carol was what introduced me to the story as a kid, and honestly, it's a lot more faithful an adaptation than you would probably expect from the title. To say this is the best adaptation may be stretching it a little too far, but this is the one I love the most, and it's a good introduction for any child, to the classic Dickens' novel!

If you haven't heard of this one, I wouldn't blame you. It may surprise you, however, upon watching it, how well it tells the story, considering that it is a made for TV movie. This might just be the most faithful adaptation, hardly taking away anything from the brilliant novel. I love this movie a lot, and enjoy watching it every year!

Alastair Sim is excellent as Scrooge. It's a great adaptation for any fan of the story!

1984's A Christmas Carol is an incredibly emotional, atmospheric adaptation, with a number of marvelous performances, resulting in a very powerful film.

Scrooge 1970 is very much of the time. It's a little corny at times, but never fails to put a smile on my face. It may just be one of the most heartwarming and upbeat adaptations out there, with a lot of fun songs to go with it.

A TV movie with an impressive budget and set design, this adaptation does things a little differently, reminiscent of a stage production. That works in it's favour, however, with loads of great songs by Alan Menkin. Once you get used to the fact that most of the actions in this movie are done in song, you may find yourself enjoying this quite a lot!

Quite the retelling of the story, this one takes place in present day London. Surprisingly, it works quite well. As well as having all the parts of the story we expect, it includes Scrooge reliving the 24th of December over and over, in between the visists from each spirit. It cleverly shows us his gradual change in character, as he tries to right his wrongs each time.

Overall, this is a pretty good movie, however it's very good at showing us the darker moments of the story, but not at the warm happy moments, leaving it rather unbalanced. It may not be for everyone, but I enjoy it for the elements of the story that it tells very well!

Without doubt the worst adaptation I have ever seen. The animation quality is far too basic, like what you would expect from a 1990s low budget cartoon, and not an actual movie. It also messes up the story, leaving out a lot of what's good about it, and also adding some bazaar things, like Scrooge being nice to a mouse. It begins and ends with live action scenes of Charles Dickens, reading his novel to an audience of people in one of his tours in the US. After the film ends, he remarks "Well, that was different to the way I remember it". What an understatement!
