Hungarian Revolution of 1956

In a small frontier town that is a real cross-section of the dreaded terror of the 1950s. Juli, the daughter of the local ÁVÓ commander, and Robi, the son of an actor who has been deported from the capital, fall in love.

Iván is living in exile from Hungary when he receives word that an old flame is ill. His return to Budapest rekindles old memories and reopens old wounds.

This film is the first one since the political changes in Hungary to deal with the topic of informants. It vividly depicts the atmosphere of Hungarian society in the seventies. The protagonist is Peter, a literary critic, is tasked by the secret police to persuade Social Democratic politician, Anna Kethly, who has been living in exile for decades, to return home. Kethly, once a minister in the government of Imre Nagy, has been fighting since 1956 to preserve the memory of the revolution and to unmask the true nature of the Kadar government. The meeting between Anna and Peter is a duel of minds, summoning up old memories and historic eras, while bringing deeply buried emotions to the surface.

At 15 he and his family became victims of state terror. At 16 he became a freedom fighter to participate in the 1956 Revolution against Soviet oppression. At 17 he is betrayed and arrested by the dreaded Secret Police (AVH). Now he has to spend the remainder of his life in a political prison, called Hell's Hallway, to reach the legal age of 18 before his death penalty can be carried out. Peter Mansfeld was 18 when he was unjustly executed by the totalitarian regime of Hungary. Today he is remembered as one of the national heroes of Hungary.

The prosecutor asks for capital punishment, but the judge opts for a sentence of 15 years in jail, which Béla Kreuzer serves to the last day. When he comes out is 1974 and finds the world is no longer the same.

During the 1956 Hungarian uprising, an American mercenary is hired to smuggle a Hungarian resistance leader out of Soviet-occupied Budapest.

Some of the most symbolic moments of the 1956 Revolution in Hungary were the tooth-and-nail battles fought by the so-called 'Pest Lads' who dared to defy odds by taking on the panzers of one of the world's superpowers. The story begins on October 23rd, 1956 and ends on November 4th of the same year. Juli is Totya's girlfriend but also loves Gábor. Their love triangle will have to endure the trials and tribulations of these stirring times. A group of boys living in the outskirts of the capital are playing football in abandoned lot when Juli, a ticket inspector, brings news of protests breaking out in the city. Only Gábor accompanies her into town and together they become part of this historical event. At dawn, when the boys too come under fire from Soviet forces, they decide to join in the fight. Under Totya's leadership, they grab some guns and build a barricade around a small cinema. With only guns and gasoline at their disposal, they stand their ground against the encroaching Soviet tanks.

During the early 1950's the very existence of the camp for political prisoners at Recsk was one of the Hungarian communist regime's deepest secrets. Escape From Recsk tells the story of the only person who ever managed to escape successfully from Recsk - Hungary's most notorious prison camp. He cherishes his hope by memorizing the names of fellow prisoners. The disclosure of the names of these prisoners in the West revealed the existence of the camp to the world and started the process that eventually led to dismantling the gulag camps in Central East Europe. Escape From Recsk captures the atmosphere of paranoia, humiliation and degradation that prevailed throughout the Stalinist gulag system. Even the guards do not trust each other in this nightmare world where betrayal is the only currency for purchasing small favours, and even life.

Zoltán, the eight year-old hero, is taken by his mother to his grandparents. It is 1955 and the boy's father is in prison and in order to help, the mother's parents agree to bring up their grandson. Zoltan's life changes totally: new surroundings, new experiences, new friends. One day after visiting his father in prison and as a result of its effects on him, he sets out with his grandfather's gun, and his inseparable four-legged friend, the dog Kajla, to free his father. He gets lost in the marsh and catches pneumonia. In his nightmares he plans out his life: he saves an injured stork, he talks to the animals. While the boy fights his illness, the grandfather really finds an injured stork and they cure it together.

'68 covers exactly one year (January 1st through December 31st) in the lives of Zoltan Szabo and his family, Hungarian immigrants, working hard to make a life in San Francisco in 1968. The Szabos tries to adjust to the new country, changing times and each other. The year covered was one of particular cultural change in the US and this interplays with the cultural changes occurring around Zoltan, his wife and his two college-age sons.

The life story of Imre Nagy is one of the defining stories of 20th century Hungarian history. He was the first communist leader to become the symbol of a national revolution, who, in addition, withdrew from the Warsaw Treaty and stood up for democracy based on a pluralist party system. Many argue that the role he assumed in the revolution of 1956 and his continued loyalty to the notion of the revolution, which prevailed until his death, did not clearly follow from his communist convictions and his past experiences in Moscow.
