Wealthy, lecherous Zamindar Thakur Vir Pratap Singh lords over a small region in rural India, mercilessly killing anyone who opposes his rule. He gets the male villagers addicted to gambling and sexually molests the female villagers under false pretenses. When the same happen to Sundariya, which results in her losing her mental balance, her two brothers form a gang which includes three other male members from the village to put an end to the tyrannical rule of the Thakur.

The young Nawab is smitten by Umrao's beauty and her poems, but is finally forced to marry a girl of his mother's choice, leaving behind a heart-broken and devastated Umrao, who seeks solace in the arms of Faiz Ali and finally elopes with him, only to find out that he is a wanted bandit, and is shot down and killed by guards. Umrao re-locates to Kanpur where she establishes herself as a Poet and dancer, but is hunted down by brothel-keepers, Gohar Mirza and Husseini and brought back, where she is told that she must marry Gohar. Watch what Umrao does to escape from being married against her will, and her attempts to try and find her way back to her parents.

Ishwar Acharya lives a wealthy lifestyle with his widowed mom, a sister, brother Kishan and his wife, Janki; and another brother, Prakash who is also married. Janki would like Ishwar to get married to her cousin, but Ishwar loves his childhood sweetheart, Shanti, and wants to marry her. When he is unable to convince his mom and Janki to chance their minds, he marries Shanti at the Registrar's office and brings her home, where they are not welcome and they leave. Ishwar gets a job as an Insurance Investigator, Shanti gets pregnant and gives birth to a boy. Ishwar, who has always lived a wealthy life is unable to adjust to their modest incomes, and becomes angry and bitter. He gets into an accident and is hospitalized for several months. When he is discharged he is shocked to find out that his child has passed away. He physically abuses Shanti and yells at Chachi, who was looking after the ailing child. When Shanti returns home the next day, she finds that Ishwar has left her and gone to his mom's house. With nothing to connect them to their present lives, it looks like this marriage has come to an end, and the couple, who were once so very deeply in love, may never get to see each other again.

Geeta is the second daughter, who is widowed, and is now living with her family. Sangeeta is the only one employed, and carrying the responsibility of this family on her shoulders. When her father returns home, she hopes to resign from her job, and marry her sweetheart, Prem, but alas, the father again leaves them, and Sangeeta returns to her employment. Complications arise when Geeta falls in love with Prem, and Sangeeta decides to get them married. The family rent out a room to a struggling and unemployed young man by the name of Anand Bhatnagar, who is unable to pay any rent, and is secretly in love with Sangeeta. When Anand rescues Kalpana from killing herself, Sangeeta arranges their marriage. Unable to offend Sangeeta, Anand agrees to marry Kalpana. Things turn around for Sangeeta when Ashok finally quits drinking and gets a job as a waiter, and her boss, Kanwal, proposes marriage to her. Sangeeta is all set to resign from her job, get married, and live a comfortable life, not knowing that fate has something else in store for her.

Lakshmi (Reena Roy) and Vijay Singh (Raj Babbar) fall in love, but Vijay's father Thakur (Om Shivpuri) at first is not ready to wed his son with a petty postmaster's daughter but then agrees. Vijay and Lakshmi both get married. But soon Vijay has to go London for further studies. Lakshmi gives birth to a boy, on Vijay's return his father has a party, and on the same night he has to go quite far to attend someone ill and on his return to the party while driving very fast vijay meets with a car accident and dies. His in-laws call their daughter in-law unlucky and throw her out, but she again becomes pregnant. Lakshmi while running away from goons arrives at a courtesan's parlour. Tamanchabai (Nadira) takes her in and there she gives birth to a girl. Lakshmi never sells her body, just her dance. Years later she happens to kill Moti Seth (Bharat Kapoor) as he wanted a one night affair with Lakshmi's niw young daughter. Her son Ajay (Raj Babbar) who she calls Pappu in childhood is now a lawyer, he fights against her in court but once he knows that Lakshmi is his mum, he asks the court for her forgiveness but she still gets life imprisonment. But outside court after embracing her son and daughter she dies.

After an unsuccessful marriage, Niloufer gets married to Haider, an editor, and eventually falls in love with him. However, soon her marriage bliss ends when her ex-husband Wasim returns in her life.

It takes a debilitating disease like cancer to reunite brother (Raj Babbar) and sister (Nutan).

As far as he can remember Harinarain Singh alias Hariya has no knowledge of his birth, parents nor of a family home. During a skirmish with some of Thakur Balram Singh's hoodlums, he lies unconscious at the entrance of a temple with the Poojary in attendance, and an elderly unhinged woman praying to God for his sake. When Balraj returns home he accepts this land from his uncle and decides to oppose Hariya with all his might, especially when he finds out that the love of his life, Sharda, is living with Hariya.

A journalist, Mehta, on the run from Jagmohan's men, leaves an envelope with singer, Ramprasad Singh, and asks him to deliver it to Inspector J.S. Sharma at Bandra (Bomay) Police Station. Subsequently, Mehta is killed. Ramprasad turns over the envelope to Inspector Sharma, and Jagmohan is arrested and sentenced to two years in prison. Then Ramprasad starts receiving threats and threatening phone calls, and asks Sharma for protection. Ramprasad, his wife, Rajni, and son, are enrolled in the Witness Protection Program, and given a new identity. After sometime Jagmohan finds out their whereabouts, and Sharma gets them newer names, this time Catholic names. When Jagmohan gets their whereabouts again, Sharma gets the family Muslim names. Fed up of running for their lives, changing their religion and their location, Ramprasad decides to take on his original name, and return home to Bombay. Once there, Ramprasad devises his very own scheme of getting even with Jagmohan, initially by creating misunderstandings between his men, and getting them to kill each other, and lastly kidnapping Jagmohan's daughter, Komal, and injecting her with cocaine, bringing him into conflict with his own family, and the law.

Kalpana pranks on everyone by lying even after getting frequent warnings from her brother Inspector Kamal who has warned her that someday she might land in trouble.Kalpana plays vital part in getting Kamal and her neighbor Seema close who love each other Alpana's marriage gets fixed with Seema's brother Dr Anil but Alpana is in love with Rasik.Kalpana lies to her mother that Anil is not of good character and breaks the marriage but ends up falling in love with him.

Aarti Verma (Smita Patil) is an educated girl living with her young brother Sanjay Verma (Alankar Joshi) and her mother. She joins as the personal secretary to Jolly (Shakti Kapoor). Meanwhile, Vijay (Raj Babbar) develops a desire that he should marry Aarti, although he does not propose to her directly. One day Vijay finds that Aarti's brother is a drug addict and promptly informs Aarti. She convinces her brother to join the army so that he becomes a disciplined person in his life. After a few days Jolly tries to rape Aarti and Vijay comes to the rescue.
