- DirectorSean BakerStarsBrooklynn PrinceBria VinaiteWillem DafoeSet over one summer, the film follows precocious six-year-old Moonee as she courts mischief and adventure with her ragtag playmates and bonds with her rebellious but caring mother, all while living in the shadows of Walt Disney World.10/10
A deeply realistic look at how poverty affects [and doesn't affect] adults and children alike. It's a little bit Do the Right Thing meets Good Morning, but it definitely is also its' own thing. I found it all to be extremely unique and quite extraordinary -- from the cinematography, to the dialogue and acting, to how much it gets right without seeming to be preachy or overly dramatic (compared to a film such as Moonlight). I can't think of a single thing wrong with this film. See it. - DirectorYorgos LanthimosStarsBarry G. BernsonHerb CaillouetBill CampSteven, a charismatic surgeon, is forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart, when the behavior of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing turns sinister.9/10
Feels good when someone's unique vision is fully realized on screen. The acting, the Kubrickian cinematography, and especially the score were all superb. The music is hypnotic, and is probably my favorite aspect of the film. The story is completely original and holds your attention throughout. Can't wait to watch it again. - DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsVicky KriepsDaniel Day-LewisLesley ManvilleSet in 1950s London, Reynolds Woodcock is a renowned dressmaker whose fastidious life is disrupted by a young, strong-willed woman, Alma, who becomes his muse and lover.9/10
I can't stop thinking about this film. It's one that I wanted to watch again immediately as the credits rolled. The acting is pure perfection, and DDL gives one of the most perfect performances of the year. Krieps is equally as good, which is almost insane to say. The cinematography is beautifully grainy and detailed. The score -- my god the score. It elevates this film a couple of notches. It reminded me of the score for The Conversation, which is one of my all-time favorites. It is the director's best film since There Will Be Blood, and it might have even topped that for me.
It's a film only PTA could have made, and that's the biggest complement I could give an artist. - DirectorChris PeckoverStarsOlivia DeJongeLevi MillerEd OxenbouldOn a quiet suburban street, a babysitter must defend a twelve-year-old boy from intruders, only to discover it's far from a normal home invasion.10/10
This movie is as perfect as they come. The way it seamlessly blends horror, comedy, thrills and the Christmas atmosphere had me in awe. Acting is top-notch from these young actors. Run time is brisk and increases replayability. Characters are memorable and relatable. Perfect amount of gore mixed in with suspense, and a great twist (don't watch the trailers). There is one single continuity issue in the film, and considering how elaborate the film is, it's something that is forgiven. Better Watch Out might be the best mixture of horror and Christmas I have ever seen (followed closely by Black Christmas). Where films, such as the highly disappointing Krampus, use the holidays as a useless aesthetic, this film actually feels like a Christmas movie and that combination with horror is wonderful. - DirectorChristopher NolanStarsFionn WhiteheadBarry KeoghanMark RylanceAllied soldiers from Belgium, the British Commonwealth and Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II.10/10
I've never seen a war film that prioritizes tension and the horrors of war on such a massive scale. Usually the more massive the scale, the bigger the action, but not in this case. The score is brilliant and really ups the ante. Cinematography is wonderful and makes this massive scale journey more personal and confined. You truly feel that you are a part of this battle, and while the characters aren't introduced in a grandiose way, you still feel attached to every one of them. Simply put, Dunkirk is Nolan's finest work. - DirectorSean ByrneStarsEthan EmbryShiri ApplebyPruitt Taylor VinceA struggling painter's possessed by dark forces after he and his young family move into their dream home in rural Texas, in this creepy haunted-house tale.9/10
Technically this is a 2015 film, but it didn't really go past festivals and get its wide release until this year. This is the best horror film I've seen since The Witch. It has a hypnotic ambiance that's difficult to pull off unless the director really knows that they're doing. It's beautifully paced at 75 minutes, and hits all the right emotions. Strongly-written characters and fantastic acting. I absolutely loved it. - DirectorMatt ReevesStarsAndy SerkisWoody HarrelsonSteve ZahnAfter the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and begins his own mythic quest to avenge his kind.10/10
This jaw-dropping sequel to Rise and Dawn is not only the best film in the new trilogy, but the best Planet of the Apes film of all time. Certain scenes will take your breath away. The score is wonderful and properly themed. The acting is tremendous throughout, and the 2 hours 20 minutes honestly felt like 90 minutes. I didn't want it to end. If you were a bit disappointed with Dawn like I was, don't worry. This is pure cinematic bliss. War is the perfect ending to what might be my favorite blockbuster film trilogy of all time. - DirectorJulia DucournauStarsGarance MarillierElla RumpfRabah Nait OufellaA young woman, studying to be a vet, develops a craving for human flesh.9/10
Simply nothing else like it. This might be the best foreign horror film since Let the Right One in. - DirectorCraig GillespieStarsMargot RobbieSebastian StanAllison JanneyCompetitive ice skater Tonya Harding rises amongst the ranks at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, but her future in the activity is thrown into doubt when her ex-husband intervenes.8/10
The Fighter on ice. I really enjoyed this one. I thought it was well-structured and featured some outstanding performances. Just when you thought we've seen every kind of sports film there could be, this one comes out and challenges that belief. You believe these characters, their intentions, and their flaws. Very well shot and directed. - DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaMark HamillRey develops her abilities with the help of Luke Skywalker, as the Resistance prepares for battle against the First Order.9/10
Looking solely at this movie, it's the most enjoyable Star Wars film of all time. The 150 minutes felt like 90, and I didn't want it to end. I don't consider myself the most hardcore Star Wars fan, but I love the movies. But they are just that: movies. The people that put them on a pedestal might be disappointed. But screw those nerds. This movie was absolutely hilarious. What makes Star Wars so great is that ALL of the films are flawed, yet those flaws bring a fun and care-free personality to the films that make them more accessible to the audience. Why the nerds decided to pick this one apart is beyond me.
I loved the acting, character arcs for Rey and Finn, and Luke absolutely stole the show. The dynamic between Kylo Ren and Rey was fascinating to watch. The score, like always, hits all the necessary emotional points. Is it perfect? No. There are some story elements that didn't make much sense, it basically rendered most of TFA and its anticipations useless, and The New Order is pretty stupid, but the film is so damn enjoyable that it doesn't matter. I loved this movie, and it is in the top 3 Star Wars films for sure.
It goes against audience expectations. That's why half the fan base hates it. A deep film with touching themes and great action and humor. Sometimes you have to burn down a forest to let something new and beautiful grow. Star Wars is changing--like it or not. There are many things that took me by surprise, even shocked me. While doing all of this, it still manages to raise questions that I hope will be answered in the final film. Your move, Abrams. - DirectorS. Craig ZahlerStarsVince VaughnJennifer CarpenterDon JohnsonA former boxer-turned-drug runner lands in a prison battleground after a deal gets deadly.8/10
A completely unique and original vision. For me, Vaughn gives the best performance of the year. It's unfortunate he doesn't take on more serious roles. He has such a mighty presence on screen, one where he's powerful yet stone-faced, which make the emotional punch of an ending all the more impactful. A couple of questionable decision-making aside, this has cult classic written all over it, and I personally look forward to giving it a second watch. - DirectorLee UnkrichAdrian MolinaStarsAnthony GonzalezGael García BernalBenjamin BrattAspiring musician Miguel, confronted with his family's ancestral ban on music, enters the Land of the Dead to find his great-great-grandfather, a legendary singer.8/10
I'd give the first act an 8, the second act, which kind of dragged, a 6, and the final act an easy 10. This film has a lot of heart and imagination. It might be the least kid-friendly Pixar film to date, which I imagine is why they stuck a Frozen short at the start. I loved the theme of the film, and at a distance, it feels like they got it right. The visuals and music are also top notch. Visually, this might be the second best looking Pixar film to date. Emotionally, it packs the biggest punch since Up. It remains to be seen if this will be a Pixar classic, but at an initial viewing, it's wonderful. - DirectorMartin McDonaghStarsFrances McDormandWoody HarrelsonSam RockwellA mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter's murder when they fail to catch the culprit.8/10
Frances Mcdormand is the female equivalent of DDL. She doesn't do many films, but when she does, she's terrific. She embodies this character so well, and has such a large-but-subtle screen presence, that it makes this film flow better than it should have. The structure and the way the story is told is unique, but at the same time it felt a bit lazy as events are unrealistically connected together. This doesn't take away from the acting or entertainment factor. I honestly believe this is McDonagh's best film to date, one that's original and unafraid to take risks. - DirectorGreta GerwigStarsSaoirse RonanLaurie MetcalfTracy LettsIn 2002, an artistically inclined 17-year-old girl comes of age in Sacramento, California.8/10
Immaculate acting and cinematography make for an emotionally rich experience. It captures growing up so well; the difficulty of choosing between life and family. It's also a unique twist on the typical high school movie.
I didn't particularly like the dynamic between the mother and daughter; one seemingly more selfish than the other, it was difficult to root for either. But that, after all, is the point of the movie. There's no real beginning and end here. There's no payoff that the audience is waiting for. You are watching a period in this girl's life with no promise of a resolution, no questions to answer. This can either enhance of hinder the film, and it does a little bit of both here.
While the film felt 2003, a lot of the ideas and opinions are obviously current. You could tell some things were shoe-horned in there, and that might be my biggest gripe. You mix these totally interesting characters, all seemingly different and the same in their own way, and they all happen to be going through something at the exact same time, and this goes back to my point of the story being somewhat paper-thin. You need as much interesting material so that the audience stays engaged. They pulled this off, but at the expense of some realism. For example, one of the characters is found to be gay, and not a couple scenes later a much older character comes out. It just felt unnecessary and somewhat unrealistic.
The editing is very fast-paced, and it maintains that style throughout. Sometimes the cuts felt awkwardly placed, in moments where there was no comedy.
This is an interesting little film. It feels personal, yet at the same time the writing is artificial; I couldn't touch it throughout the entirety of the film. There are moments where I could connect to the story, and others that had my eyes rolling. Those divides in the story decreased the impact this film could have had on me, compared to a film like Room, that maintained it throughout. There's a level of dishonesty in the story that I couldn't shake, but if 20% of the film made me feel this way, the other 80% had me riveted. I'm fine with that. - DirectorDenis VilleneuveStarsHarrison FordRyan GoslingAna de ArmasYoung Blade Runner K's discovery of a long-buried secret leads him to track down former Blade Runner Rick Deckard, who's been missing for thirty years.8/10
From a visual and music standpoint, this is pure cinematic art. Blade Runner is one of the greatest films ever in my opinion. The way it blends a futuristic atmosphere, film noir characters and a simple science fiction story was something that hadn't been seen at the time. It will forever be considered a classic, and is an inspiration to many filmmakers working today. Do I feel the same way about 2049? Maybe not. The story isn't as refined as it could be, with certain characters not fleshed out and elements that seemed lazily pasted together to make the story move forward. With that said, I will say that I enjoyed the hell out of 2049, think that it is an amazing work of art, and is an unnecessary but nevertheless worthy addition to the Blade Runner lore. - DirectorTrey Edward ShultsStarsJoel EdgertonChristopher AbbottCarmen EjogoSecure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, a man has established a tenuous domestic order with his wife and son. Then a desperate young family arrives seeking refuge.9/10
This is a difficult one to rank, because I feel it's flawed but ambitious, enjoyable yet dissatisfying. It's understandable that some absolutely hate this film because of its deceiving promotional work, because it's really not a horror film. It's more of a psychological thriller. It bares a plot often seen in straight-to-DVD horror films, but the differentiating factor is its' execution, and that is what makes this film so memorable.
I'll be quick to say, I love this movie. It completely grew on me, and I can't wait to see it again. It manages to elicit as much tension as classic Hitchcock films such as Rear Window. The characters are unique and the mystery behind each one of them is intriguing and makes them potentially dangerous. The ending works because, not only does it trim down the runtime to make this film easily re-watchable, it also works because the story ends and it's pretty clear what's going to happen next. I have a very strong feeling this director, who's only 28 and coming off Krisha, has played The Last of Us. There are many similarities, and there's nothing wrong with that because that's one of the best narratives in video games. - DirectorJordan PeeleStarsDaniel KaluuyaAllison WilliamsBradley WhitfordA young African-American visits his white girlfriend's parents for the weekend, where his simmering uneasiness about their reception of him eventually reaches a boiling point.8/10
A truly entertaining thrill ride. There wasn't one element that stuck out. The entire package is well-written, well-directed, and well-acted. The story is a mixture of generic horror tropes but flipped on their heads. I was surprised at some of the imagery in the film, and a couple of scenes will be difficult to forget. With that said, it's not perfect. There was one story element that I didn't like, the "twists" are rather obvious, and I don't think this film has much replayability unless you're showing it to someone for their reaction. Other than that, this is must-watch if you enjoy horror comedies. - DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsJennifer LawrenceJavier BardemEd HarrisA couple's relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.8/10
This review doesn't matter one bit, because this is a film open to many interpretations that will undoubtedly impact your response to it. It's art house for a wide audience, similar to Black Swan, and whether it's a story about one's dedication to his craft, or an allegory on religion and society today, it has something for everyone. But again, those that are deceived by the advertisements may walk away disappointed. As for actual flaws in the film, I would say that the 3rd act has so much chaos going on, that it gets a little tiresome and wish it could go back to how eerie the first two acts are. Another point is debatable, but Lawrence may have been miscast in this role, as she is so subtle and quiet, that it is almost jarring at times. I didn't get lost in her performance, and noticed an actor on screen, but that may play right to certain people's interpretation of the story and her as a character. - DirectorEdgar WrightStarsAnsel ElgortJon BernthalJon HammAfter being coerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail.8/10
Probably the most entertaining and re-watchable film of the year. After it was over, I immediately wanted to see it again. That's what great action, a fast pace and a killer soundtrack gets you. It's not perfect; the 3rd act is somewhat of a mess, some character actions are suspect, and the best chase in the film is unfortunately found at the beginning, but it moves at such a rhythm that it all combines into one special package. - DirectorTaylor SheridanStarsElizabeth OlsenJeremy RennerGraham GreeneA wildlife officer, who is haunted by a tragedy that happened because of him, teams up with an FBI agent in solving a murder of a young woman on a Wyoming Native American reservation and hopes to get redemption from his past regrets.7/10
A procedural with a great sense of atmosphere, and incredibly strong and well-written characters. I loved the dynamic of the two leads. They both have a different set of skills, and while Renner's character is shown to be more useful in this environment, Olsen portrays her character with confidence and strength. One thing I did not like is the volume of the dialogue was at times low compared to the music, a decision probably made so the audience pays more attention to what is being said and is more alert. I think that's a cheap tactic. Some other story elements seemed unrealistic to wrap the story up, but overall this is an interesting and unique thriller. - DirectorRidley ScottStarsMichelle WilliamsChristopher PlummerMark WahlbergThe story of the kidnapping of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III and the desperate attempt by his devoted mother to convince his billionaire grandfather Jean Paul Getty to pay the ransom.7/10
Ironically, the one thing that didn't feel rushed was the inclusion of Christopher Plummer. Although the story seemed a little pasted together at time, and it was told in a way that I don't necessarily love (constant text on screen explaining everything), I did enjoy this one. It's unique for a basic kidnapping story to have such grand scale. The performances were top notch and I really enjoyed this one. - DirectorJoe WrightStarsGary OldmanLily JamesKristin Scott ThomasIn May 1940, the fate of World War II hangs on Winston Churchill, who must decide whether to negotiate with Adolf Hitler, or fight on knowing that it could mean the end of the British Empire.8/10
A great companion piece to Dunkirk. I found it to be similar to Lincoln, with more creative freedom and it's more entertaining as well. Oldman is terrific, and I think he's long overdue for an Oscar. An overall great film. - DirectorJames FrancoStarsJames FrancoDave FrancoAri GraynorWhen aspiring actor Greg Sestero meets the weird and mysterious Tommy Wiseau in an acting class, they form a unique friendship and travel to Hollywood to make their dreams come true.7/10
I really liked this movie. It's extremely well-done and is a great companion piece to The Room. I just have two major gripes, only one of which actually pertains to the film itself. Simply put, the trailers ruin a large part the movie. What is the point of this movie, to see someone recreate an easily recreatable movie in The Room, or to see the inside story of how the film was made? Unfortunately the trailers show off the majority of the latter, including most if not all the jokes. My second gripe is the ending after the ending. I felt it was completely unnecessary, and would have preferred it as a special feature or after the credits. With these two things aside, Disaster Artist is a unique little film about another unique little film that has become a surprising success story over the years. They don't laugh at, but rather laugh with, and no one is degraded or made fun of, and I appreciated that. Art is subjective, after all. - DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsTaron EgertonColin FirthMark StrongAfter the Kingsman's headquarters is destroyed and the world is held hostage, an allied spy organization in the United States is discovered. These two elite secret agencies must band together to defeat a common enemy.8/10
Is it perfect? No. But people are overreacting about this one, blowing up every little flaw because of summer blockbuster fatigue. I liked this just as much as the first film. It's raunchy fun, and while the pacing isn't as tight as the first film, I was thoroughly entertained through most of this film. It pulls off those shocking scenes without distaste. - DirectorDavid LoweryStarsCasey AffleckRooney MaraMcColm Cephas Jr.In this singular exploration of legacy, love, loss, and the enormity of existence, a recently deceased, white-sheeted ghost returns to his suburban home to try to reconnect with his bereft wife.8/10
Although sometimes monotonous, this film will take a hold of you by the end. It's experimental filmmaking at its finest and another gem added to A24's catalog. This is not for everyone, but if you want a deep, intriguing and unique story, look no further. My biggest criticism is sometimes I wish it didn't show the obvious, and it felt somewhat dumbed down for the audience. Other than that, it's very good. - DirectorMichael ShowalterStarsKumail NanjianiZoe KazanHolly HunterPakistan-born comedian Kumail Nanjiani and grad student Emily Gardner fall in love but struggle as their cultures clash. When Emily contracts a mysterious illness, Kumail finds himself forced to face her feisty parents, his family's expectations, and his true feelings.7/10
This film manages to pull itself out of an atrocious first act. My biggest gripe with this film is that I didn't believe the romance on the screen, but as the film goes on it kind of manages to become more credible. My second biggest gripe is how some writers Americanize other cultures. I realize they don't want subtitles, but that comes at the sake of realism. A certain part of it becomes lost in translation.
With that said, this film is very enjoyable most of the time. I loved the dynamic between the two families, and Romano and Hunter give immaculate performances (and save the film, in my opinion). The humor is rather dry, with the same exact quirky tone over and over. But by the end, I was won over. I liked it. - DirectorCate ShortlandStarsTeresa PalmerMax RiemeltMatthias HabichA passionate holiday romance leads to an obsessive relationship when an Australian photojournalist awakens in a Berlin apartment one morning and is unable to leave.7/10

A great little story. It's slow but entertaining. I was very impressed with the various long takes throughout the film. A stylish thriller with an interesting score and fast pace. Some of the decision making with the story was a little bit far-fetched, and at times it was all over the place in terms of tone, but this is an otherwise very good film with a memorable story. - DirectorStephen ChboskyStarsJacob TremblayOwen WilsonIzabela VidovicBased on the New York Times bestseller, this movie tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman, a boy with facial differences who enters the fifth grade, attending a mainstream elementary school for the first time.7/10
A good film with a lot of heart. It circles Lifetime movie territory, but it excels with great writing and wonderful acting by the entire cast. If Matilda and Elephant Man had a baby, this would be it. - DirectorGuillermo del ToroStarsSally HawkinsOctavia SpencerMichael ShannonAt a top secret research facility in the 1960s, a lonely janitor forms a unique relationship with an amphibious creature that is being held in captivity.6/10
A beautiful mess. It seems Del Toro is going through a phase where he's making genre films, or his take on classic fables, and that's fine. I miss him as an auteur because that brought out his best qualities as a storyteller. What you get with this film is a truly unique romance, and a captivating performance from Sally Hawkins. What disappoints me most is the constant decisions Del Toro takes with the story. It seemed like every 20 minutes there was something that pulled me out of the experience -- be it a pointless homage, a scene that didn't fit, or forced character actions.
The 3rd act is very predictable. The villain of the film is a cartoon and his constant monologues at the end felt tacked-on. Certain characters do things that completely go against their beliefs in order to move the story along, and that felt lazy.
Should you see The Shape of Water? Absolutely. It's beautiful, and the central romance will likely shoot this up to classic status. But it's far from perfect, and left me very disappointed at the idea of "what could have been." - DirectorTaika WaititiStarsChris HemsworthTom HiddlestonCate BlanchettImprisoned on the planet Sakaar, Thor must race against time to return to Asgard and stop Ragnarök, the destruction of his world, at the hands of the powerful and ruthless villain Hela.7/10
I was a bit disappointed. Most of the events in the story were spoiled by the trailers, commercials, and posters. I loved Blanchett as the villain. It's a fun movie, with good but underwhelming music. It fails to be as funny as the Guardians movies, and as dire as the Avengers, so it's sort of in the middle in terms of what it wants to be. Still a fun watch, but could've been better. - DirectorJohannes RobertsStarsMandy MooreClaire HoltMatthew ModineTwo sisters vacationing in Mexico are trapped in a shark cage at the bottom of the ocean. Delivers exactly what you expect. It's entertaining, thrilling, and has a few surprises in there. Very well directed. I sometimes wonder why people love to watch films they know they will hate. This is a B-movie. No, the acting won't be perfect. But to honestly go into a film with this premise and say it was poorly done or boring, give me a break. Filmmakers succeeded in what they set out to do. I personally liked the ending; it added some creativity to otherwise standard storytelling. - DirectorKathryn BigelowStarsJohn BoyegaAnthony MackieAlgee SmithFact-based drama set during the 1967 Detroit riots in which a group of rogue police officers respond to a complaint with retribution rather than justice on their minds.7/10
I wouldn't call it enjoyable, but it's a well executed film about an important event in Detroit history. The dialogue is sometimes poorly written, the 3rd act is a mess and rather unnecessary, and some of the casting choices are difficult to comprehend. With that said, it's great to see such a small event during an important period in our history to get exposure this many years later.
A missed opportunity to not have it filmed in Detroit. - DirectorChristopher LandonStarsJessica RotheIsrael BroussardRuby ModineA college student must relive the day of her murder over and over again, in a loop that will end only when she discovers her killer's identity.7/10
A well-made little horror film with, yes, an unoriginal concept. Groundhog Day, Source Code, Edge of Tomorrow, and now Happy Death Day. Know what all of those have in common? All are good films. This reminds me of last year's Unfriended. A gimmicky horror film people expect to suck, but come out of pleasantly surprised. They succeeded in what they set out to do, and it doesn't feel rushed or a plain cash-grab. It was made with care and is a fun time at the theater. - DirectorPatty JenkinsStarsGal GadotChris PineRobin WrightWhen a pilot crashes and tells of conflict in the outside world, Diana, an Amazonian warrior in training, leaves home to fight a war, discovering her full powers and true destiny.7/10
A well-told origin story. Gadot's acting is.... uneven. Some of her dialogue is terribly acted, but she embodies Wonder Woman beautifully. The score is impressive and the action sequences are directed with great care. The middle dragged a bit. As many others have said, this is by far the best film in DC's new universe and I hope they can keep this going. - DirectorAndy MuschiettiStarsBill SkarsgårdJaeden MartellFinn WolfhardIn the summer of 1989, a group of bullied kids band together to destroy a shape-shifting monster, which disguises itself as a clown and preys on the children of Derry, their small Maine town.7/10
I began loving it and it ended up losing steam by the two hour mark. Acting, for the most part, is fantastic. Only one of the kids' acting was bad, noticeably so (Jewish character). The pacing is great but the story did get repetitive the farther it went along. Finally, it felt like a sequel was shoehorned in there at the end as the studio realized what a success this film was going to turn out. Overall, this is an epic horror film that is rarely seen today. - DirectorLuis PrietoStarsHalle BerrySage CorreaChris McGinnA mother stops at nothing to recover her kidnapped son.7/10
Similar to The Call, critics will crap all over it but audiences will get exactly what they wanted. This is a genre film. If you want to be entertained, while looking at Halle Berry for 80 minutes, this is your film. It has its fair share of problems in terms of story, but I'm not giving it a 10, now am I?
PS: If you watched this online, you watched an inferior version. The theatrical release cuts about 10 minutes, which takes out some weird and unnecessary scenes. I would give that version a 5/10. - DirectorJon WattsStarsTom HollandMichael KeatonRobert Downey Jr.Peter Parker balances his life as an ordinary high school student in Queens with his superhero alter-ego Spider-Man, and finds himself on the trail of a new menace prowling the skies of New York City.7/10
A very enjoyable Spidey story and probably the 3rd best after Raimi's first two films. The humor is sometimes hit-or-miss, and the thing I absolutely hated is all of the Marvel Cinematic Universe thrown in there. Spider-Man is my favorite super hero and I wish this was his own movie. I didn't like his ass being saved all the time by Iron Man. Tony Stark wasn't in the film much, sure, but his impact on the story line is more than any other origin story in the MCU. It felt like Marvel wanted to put as much of their universe in there just to differentiate itself from Sony. I understand the reasons, though, financially and based on Peter Parker's age, but a super hero who is always an inch away from death only to be saved by something random/another hero isn't very appealing to me. The final battle felt a bit anti-climactic, which was a let down because the events leading up to suggested something grander. With that said, the action is outstanding, as are the production values; Keaton was absolutely incredible as Vulture and I loved Holland as Spider-Man. - DirectorMalcolm D. This film is at its best when it's raunchy. The first two acts are fantastic. It's like a party you don't want to end. The third act is more generic and predictable, but it all ties up nicely. A very unique little project. Probably the best Shymalalamalnaalnan movie in over a decade. Great acting all around, and memorable as well. Nice ending. It's not going to amaze you, it's pretty much a standard kidnap flick with a major twist that plays out close to what you'd expect, but you have to admire the effort and storytelling nonetheless. - DirectorDaniel EspinosaStarsJake GyllenhaalRebecca FergusonRyan ReynoldsA team of scientists aboard the International Space Station discover a rapidly evolving life form that caused extinction on Mars and now threatens all life on Earth.7/10
A fair sci-fi epic with some puzzling decision-making along the way. It has plenty of flaws that hold it back from greatness, such as atrocious dialogue and a sense of "been there, done that." Overall, it's an enjoyable time and contains a few jaw-dropping scenes. - DirectorJordan Vogt-RobertsStarsTom HiddlestonSamuel L. I think those going into this expecting a serious Kong film, like the original and remake, will be disappointed. This is a popcorn flick with Kong. It is the silly, so-bad-it's-good classic Kong films with a big budget. It has its dull moments, but when the action gets going, it's a total blast. The last 20 minutes are spectacular. I enjoyed it.

I think Cars gets a bad rap. I really enjoy the first Cars, and think this is just as good if maybe slightly worse. Cars 2 was atrocious, and I'm glad it is never mentioned in this film. It has its ups and downs, and honestly it does feel a bit rushed, but by the end I ended up really liking it. If they decide to end it here, it would be a nice send-off to the trilogy. - DirectorPatrick HughesStarsRyan ReynoldsSamuel L. The production value on this is insane. What that means is, the pacing can be awful while the action sequences are stunning. It has great, if repetitive, comedic timing. Reminds me of early 2000 action comedies, which we don't see much anymore. Not the greatest movie ever, but it's dumb fun that you'll probably forget about a day later. - DirectorRidley ScottStarsMichael FassbenderKatherine WaterstonBilly CrudupThe crew of a colony ship, bound for a remote planet, discover an uncharted paradise with a threat beyond their imagination, and must attempt a harrowing escape.7/10
My favorite thing about this film is the fact that it doesn't completely kill the chance of a Prometheus 2. It's also a sequel to Prometheus, despite what some people have said. I thought it was a good film, and gives Alien fans exactly what they want. It's not amazing, and aside from looking pretty, it's rather generic and predictable. Fassbender elevates this film and gives it more credibility than it should have. It's not as good as Alien, Aliens, or even Prometheus (which I quite enjoyed), but it's serviceable and does add to the Alien lore. - DirectorBertrand BonelloStarsFinnegan OldfieldVincent RottiersHamza MezianiSome young folks, tired of the society they're living in, plan a bomb attack over Paris before taking shelter for a night in a shopping center.7/10
This could've been a lot better. The first half is a little jumbled, and only the ones that are truly invested in this filmmaker will care enough to draw the lines. The second half is a bit more interesting, but with every character feeling one-note, it's not as interesting as it could have been. With that said, it's still original and worth a watch. - DirectorPatrick BriceStarsKaran SoniMark DuplassDesiree AkhavanA video artist looking for work drives to a remote house in the forest to meet a man claiming to be a serial killer. A big improvement on the overrated first film. Whereas I felt the first film fell into all of the found footage cliches, but got a pass due to it's extremely small budget, this sequel feels more fresh and unique. I had a blast with this. The story is memorable and overall it's an entertaining 80 minutes. - DirectorJake KasdanStarsDwayne JohnsonKaren GillanKevin HartFour teenagers are sucked into a magical video game, and the only way they can escape is to work together to finish the game.6/10

You can tell directing is not Sorkin's forte. There's a safeness to the entire film, an unwillingness to take risks, and an lack of attention to detail that at times hurts the continuity of transitions. The dialogue is well-written, but a bit repetitive. The acting is probably the best aspect of the film, with Elba giving an outstanding performance and Chastain doing her best to make this film work. It's not a particularly great film; the main character isn't very likable and it's way too voice over heavy. This one works best as a book, as I don't think it transitioned very well to the big screen. - DirectorDavid F. To preface this review, I have not seen Annabelle or The Conjuring 2. I have, however, seen The Conjuring, and this falls into the same problem of writing scare scenes before the actual story. The story here is nothing special, and the best parts are the obvious scare scenes that feel out of place considering how well they are done. Everything else, from the characters, story, and dialogue, all feel second-rate. This makes the film feel more like Final Destination, one that's easily forgettable. - DirectorGreg McLeanStarsJohn Gallagher Jr.Tony GoldwynAdria ArjonaIn a twisted social experiment, eighty Americans are locked in their high-rise corporate office in Bogotá, Colombia, and ordered by an unknown voice coming from the company's intercom system to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed.6/10
Say what you will, but it delivers exactly what is expected based on the plot. It's not the greatest movie in the world, but at the same time it's hard to fault it. I would say after the first half, the humor and pace starts to become tiresome. It's so energetic and vibrant, that adults may want some downtime in there. For kids, though, they will love it. I remember reading the first book as a kid, in fact I still own that book, and it's definitely true to the source material. This film has its moments, specifically where it subtly pays homage to classic horror films, but the main plot wasn't executed as well as it could have been. It makes a lot of fun of the newer generations and technology, but it does so against the main characters. It feels like the storytellers are making fun of the very same characters that we are supposed to root for. It just doesn't work, and it also makes the film quite annoying. We all know why this film was made and fast-tracked to production. To my surprise, it wasn't preachy and agenda-filled until the very end. It has its Spielberg quirky moments, which I thought meshed very well with the serious tone of the film. The acting is rather silly in my opinion -- it's pretty over-the-top. The overall film is quite boring, and the story definitely needed more time before committing it on screen. Overall it was... educational, but it won't exceed your expectations or surprise you. More or less an elaborate story line to jump-start a new set of films. I admired the attempt at a coherent story. The games themselves aren't all hits, but there are a couple of memorable ones. I imagine the sequels will have much better traps, while telling less of a story. Aside from the amount of homage it plays to past films, and a few great jokes, this is a massive disappointment. I thought Curse of Chucky was an awesome revival, one that had a lot of hard work and effort put into its story and effects. This is a complete 180. The story, the acting, and effects (or lack thereof) are all hugely disappointing. A tone-deaf remake that offers absolutely nothing. The direction has an uneven tone and doesn't know what it wants to be. The dialogue is laughable at times. I loathed most of the characters, some of who at times act like complete idiots. The ending was rather terrible. The only positives I can bestow upon this film are that Nicole Kidman does a decent job, and that it is entertaining enough to pass the time. Sophia Coppola definitely missed the mark here, and I would much prefer if she made a more original film with her unique style of storytelling. Predictable, takes no risks, and absolutely pointless. It's very unfortunate that they rushed this sequel out. I loved Bad Moms, and this just feels like a quick rehash. The jokes aren't as good and the story is very underwhelming. I still love these characters, and in that respect it is still entertaining, but I feel they deserve a proper sequel. Certain story elements feel forced in order to either achieve cliche moments, or similarities to the first film. After all, since the first one was a success, audiences must want the exact same thing, right? That type of logic is just.. bad. - DirectorMcGStarsJudah LewisSamara WeavingRobbie AmellWhen Cole stays up past his bedtime, he discovers that his hot baby sitter belongs to a satanic cult that will stop at nothing to keep him quiet.5/10
This movie was a complete disappointment, especially after seeing the much superior Better Watch Out. The only positives are that there were 2-3 funny moments, and it has a pretty good soundtrack/sound mixing. Literally every one of these characters were beyond annoying. The dialogue felt so deliberate and written that it just didn't feel realistic. The story was predictable mostly due to the direction and writing. For example, the camera would shoot on a characters face where they say one line, and it's obvious that line will come back later in the film. My biggest issue was with the tone, my god what the hell was McG thinking? It felt like I watched 5 different films in one. It wants to be a lot of things but is mediocre at every one of them, leaving no one in the audience happy. The gimmicky screen texts came out of nowhere, most of the comedy fell flat (though admittedly there were a couple of funny moments), and overall it just didn't work whatsoever. To top it off, we get a Grindhouse-esque title at the end. For me, the romance between these two characters did not work. The older male character felt predatory, making slight, suggestive advances early in the film to this 17-year-old kid. The direction of these scenes are so up close and in your face, that it came across as dumbed down for the audience more than an aesthetic choice.
As the romance progresses, it all feels quite pedestrian. It feels like two pre-teen lovers, rather than a grown man and a child. The kid shows affection this way because he's inexperienced and curious, and Hammer's character seems to play along until the very end.
At a certain point, I asked myself -- is this the point? To brilliantly show the effect a grown man can have on a child? To show audience hypocrisy when it comes to these issues? Will Hammer's character gradually become a "villain"? Nope. If it was, then it had piss-poor execution. I noticed the audience smiling at what was going on, as if it was romantic or cute.
I'll say that the cinematography is beautiful, the acting is great, and the music fits certain scenes perfectly. But when the central romance in... a romance... doesn't work for you, it's impossible for the film to succeed. - DirectorJoe LynchStarsSteven YeunSamara WeavingSteven BrandA virus spreads through an office complex causing white-collar workers to act out their worst impulses.4/10

A dull, pointless and, frankly, pathetic imitation job. There's not a single enjoyable moment in the entire film. I just don't see the point. These directors made one of my favorite horror films with "Inside," but it seems like they simply don't understand what made the original film so great. This goes for most of these remakes/reboots/whatever you want to call them. What those had, though, is something called entertainment, which this film severely lacks. Nearly all of these characters are complete garbage human beings, which eliminates the "I care about these characters" factor that should be in every horror film. From a story standpoint, certain things made absolutely no sense. It's lazy. It's not even clear who Leatherface is until the end. His backstory, which I will soon forget even exists, is pretty damn anticlimactic.
The original is my favorite horror film, and I'm not one of those people that says "this ruined it for me." Remember, it's not like Tobe Hooper wrote this. It's just some random ignoramus. Forget it exists and move on.
