- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsMichael J. FoxChristopher LloydLea ThompsonMarty McFly, a 17-year-old high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his close friend, the maverick scientist Doc Brown.Time travel masterpiece. What a great movie - the writing, the editing, the acting, the writing, Alan Silvestri's score*, the effects, the writing...I've yet to see a better film overall.
*When the first mysterious notes of the score begin at 14 minutes in, it's as if the film gains a new dimension one could be forgiven for not even realizing was missing - not unlike Wizard of Oz's surprise introduction of color - as both we and Marty are filled with wonder and intrigue. - DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsJames StewartKim NovakBarbara Bel GeddesA former San Francisco police detective juggles wrestling with his personal demons and becoming obsessed with the hauntingly beautiful woman he has been hired to trail, who may be deeply disturbed.Alluring noir-ish mystery/romance, great performances, wonderful haunting score by Bernard Herrmann, with a main character I could identify with almost too well.
I first watched Vertigo late 2012, a month or two after it dethroned Citizen Kane as Sight & Sound's best film of all time. It certainly affected me emotionally much more than the latter.
This was the first film I saw with Kim Novak, and crushed on her even before the film ended. I really empathize with Scotty, falling in love with someone enigmatic and forbidden... - DirectorRichard DonnerStarsSean AstinJosh BrolinJeff CohenA group of young misfits called The Goonies discover an ancient map and set out on an adventure to find a legendary pirate's long-lost treasure.Quintessential early-mid teenage adventure! A definite childhood favorite, I remember fantasizing that I too was a Goonie, along on the quest.
- DirectorIrvin KershnerStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherAfter the Rebel Alliance are overpowered by the Empire, Luke Skywalker begins his Jedi training with Yoda, while his friends are pursued across the galaxy by Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett.My (and most people's) favorite Star Wars film.
Yet it was the last of the original trilogy I saw - for some reason in the mid 80's this seemed to be broadcast on TV a lot less frequently than Return of the Jedi (or Star Wars). Watching them out of order had several consequences, for instance Leia kissing Luke struck me as...a bit titillating and taboo (the characters didn't yet know they were siblings, but I did), and I found the Big Reveal anti-climactic... in fact Luke's arm getting cut off was the bigger shock to me.
Before I saw it, I had heard (courtesy of one of my dad's friends) that Vader dismembered Luke, and I refused to believe it - clearly in Jedi you could see he had two hands, so how could it have been cut off? I called him a liar, he insisted, and after a heated discussion and futile attempts to support my argument with 6-year-old logic I eventually stormed off in tears, sat in a chair and looked out our front door until my dad came to console me and gently suggest to trouble myself no more until I could watch it.
Anyway, once I saw it, it established itself in my mind as the pinnacle of Star Wars - romance, tragedy, mystery, danger, the menace of Vader and the dark side, the wonderful musical themes, character development... the asteroid field chase that impressed the hell out of me... Empire made (and makes) me feel more than any of the others. Well done Irvin Kershner. - DirectorGeorge LucasStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherLuke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader.Whether you consider it sci-fi, space opera, or even historical fiction (after all it was "a long time ago"), Star Wars was an epic game changer. This is the first film I can actually recall watching.
I was 6 or 7, had scoured the TV Guide for weeks in hopes it would play, and finally there it was - at 6 in the morning. Oh I made damn sure was there - I scooted the rocking chair up to within inches of the big console TV (to approximate a cinematic experience, no doubt), and I can clearly remember fantasizing that Luke was on one side of me and Leia was on the other, as I could finally watch the film in its entirety without interruption. - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordSean ConneryAlison DoodyIn 1938, after his father goes missing while pursuing the Holy Grail, Indiana Jones finds himself up against the Nazis again to stop them from obtaining its powers.Probably my favorite Indy flick.
I remember seeing just a tiny bit at the drive-in, which was playing on the other screen as we were leaving early (due to rain), and wishing we'd have seen that instead.
I also remember gawking at how long River Phoenix's hair was (long enough to cover his face in a scene). Years later, I grew my own hair out, thanks in part to that influence. - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordKaren AllenPaul FreemanIn 1936, archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones is hired by the U.S. government to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis can obtain its awesome powers.High adventure! Dashing, debonair hero! Strong, independent female lead! Romance! Ancient treasures! Spooky sets filled with creepy-crawlies! Booby traps! Death-defying stunts! Supernatural religious horror!
What a great movie.
I remember one day when I was fairly young, I was with my mom while she was out shopping, and I noticed this Read-Along Adventure book & cassette on one of those rotating wire retail book racks. The prominently styled title caught my eye, and, having never seen the movie, the map room scene below stirred my imagination, evoking adventure and a sense of mystery. I recall desperately pleading to buy it. Though I never got the book & cassette, I did eventually get to see the movie, and I was not disappointed.
I crush on Harrison Ford to this day. - DirectorNicholas MeyerStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyWith the assistance of the Enterprise crew, Admiral Kirk must stop an old nemesis, Khan Noonien Singh, from using the life-generating Genesis Device as the ultimate weapon.Following the most boring Trek, this is the best. Moby Dick in space.
Great score. Earliest textured CG shot in a motion picture (by the folks who would later go on to start Pixar).
Started a mini-crush on Kirstie Alley. - DirectorJonathan FrakesStarsPatrick StewartJonathan FrakesBrent SpinerThe Borg travel back in time intent on preventing Earth's first contact with an alien species. Captain Picard and his crew pursue them to ensure that Zefram Cochrane makes his maiden flight reaching warp speed. The best of the Next Generation films. Yes it features the overused sci-fi crutch of time travel, but it's done well. Imperfect Picard. Drunk senior officers. Data. The beginning.
- DirectorLeonard NimoyStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyTo save Earth from an alien probe, Admiral James T. Kirk and his fugitive crew go back in time to San Francisco in 1986 to retrieve the only beings who can communicate with it: humpback whales.Love this. It's total ridiculous fan-service, but love it.
- DirectorNicholas MeyerStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyOn the eve of retirement, Kirk and McCoy are charged with assassinating the Klingon High Chancellor and imprisoned. The Enterprise crew must help them escape to thwart a conspiracy aimed at sabotaging the last best hope for peace. The first Trek film I saw in a theater, and (until Star Wars: The Force Awakens) the only opening night showing I've gone to. The audience was simply alive that night, costumed, cheering...oh it was glorious. Love the action and the subject matter.
- DirectorDavid CarsonStarsPatrick StewartWilliam ShatnerMalcolm McDowellWith the help of long presumed dead Captain Kirk, Captain Picard must stop a deranged scientist willing to murder on a planetary scale in order to enter a space matrix.Old school meets new. Very cool effects, and I found Soran a satisfyingly relatable villain. To what lengths would you go, to return to paradise?
- DirectorRichard MarquandStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherAfter rescuing Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, the Rebel Alliance attempt to destroy the second Death Star, while Luke struggles to help Darth Vader back from the dark side. Many feel this is the weakest of the original trilogy, but to a young me who felt the "latest" is inherently the greatest, it was my favorite - until I saw Empire of course (yes I saw them out of order - see my notes on Empire for more). The flight into and out of the Death Star was particularly riveting.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordKate CapshawKe Huy QuanIn 1935, Indiana Jones is tasked by Indian villagers with reclaiming a rock stolen from them by a secret cult beneath the catacombs of an ancient palace.More heart-stopping high adventure! (See what I did there?) Much darker than Raiders. One of the films that directly led to creation of PG-13.
In hindsight the film is tainted by problematic stereotypes. But to pre-teen me, it was just an amazing adventure. Even at that age, I had caught on that cinema - especially this kind of movie - was replete with artistic license, cherry-picking, and exaggeration, all in service of the spectacle. At no point did I believe that was what Indians ate or that was how they worshipped, or what-have-you. It wasn't claiming to be a documentary. Still, even Spielberg has disowned it.
It is what it is, but I still manage to enjoy the film. It had amazing effects and stunts, and they did a good job of making the bad guys truly despicable.
My memory is hazy but I believe I saw this before I ever saw Raiders of the Lost Ark. I remember recording this to the second half of a VHS tape, immediately following Buckaroo Banzai. - DirectorJohn GlenStarsRoger MooreChristopher WalkenTanya RobertsThe recovery of a microchip from the body of a fellow British secret agent leads James Bond to a mad industrialist scheming to cause massive destruction.Spies, cool spy gear, evil plots, lewd double entendres, Duran Duran, Christopher Walken. The first Bond I saw in its entirety, so is naturally a favorite.
Try to imagine what must have been going through the mind of a prepubescent boy as he witnessed, during the customary theme song, scantily clad - no, wait...apparently nude?! - women, the naughty bits teasingly shadowed or strategically (frustratingly) covered, but definitely glimpsed if only fleetingly...and this was apparently ok to show on TV?! Oh I love the movies!
(Also try to imagine what must have been going through said mind at witnessing interracial...relations for the first time. As if that weren't mind-blowing enough, this obvious spy waltzes into Zorin's domain, basically steals his woman's attention away...and Zorin is apparently ok with this?!)
This film (along with The Beastmaster) was directly responsible for a crush on Tanya Roberts. - DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenOrlando BloomA meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.Awesome, loving treatment of the revered fantasy novel. Brilliant score by Howard Shore. Filmmaking doesn't come much more satisfying and rewarding than this.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenViggo MortensenWhile Frodo and Sam edge closer to Mordor with the help of the shifty Gollum, the divided fellowship makes a stand against Sauron's new ally, Saruman, and his hordes of Isengard. One of my favorite musical moments is the beginning of Gollum's Song, which starts at the end of the film, as the camera pans up toward Mount Doom far in the distance, such a foreboding, chilling cue as we are reminded just how much farther we have yet to go. The song itself is utterly forlorn and poignantly beautiful.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodViggo MortensenIan McKellenGandalf and Aragorn lead the World of Men against Sauron's army to draw his gaze from Frodo and Sam as they approach Mount Doom with the One Ring.A bit too long...and loved every minute of it.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsNatalie PortmanMila KunisVincent CasselNina is a talented but unstable ballerina on the verge of stardom. Pushed to the breaking point by her artistic director and a seductive rival, Nina's grip on reality slips, plunging her into a waking nightmare.Having been a fan of Swan Lake (and of Tchaikovsky generally) since high school, I really enjoyed this thriller.
Plus that one particular erotic scene was a delightful titillation. - DirectorMatthew RobbinsStarsPeter MacNicolCaitlin ClarkeRalph RichardsonA young wizarding apprentice is sent to kill a dragon which has been devouring girls from a nearby kingdom.Very cool film, surprising subject matter coming from Disney.
- DirectorDesmond DavisStarsLaurence OlivierHarry HamlinClaire BloomPerseus must battle Medusa and the Kraken to save the Princess Andromeda. It only amounts to about 8 seconds of screen time (and focusing on that rather than the rest of this great epic may seem a bit..er...creepy)...but I can't help but wish that nudity in film could be so tastefully handled, naturally presented as it was in this, completely decoupled from sexuality. What happened to our moral compass, these days when a breast is considered more dangerous (and causes much more of an uproar) than violence...
- DirectorJim HensonStarsDavid BowieJennifer ConnellyToby FroudSixteen-year-old Sarah must solve a labyrinth to rescue her baby brother when he is taken by the Goblin King.David Bowie. Muppets. Fantasy.
The start of a lingering crush on Jennifer Connelly. Yes I know she was only 14 during filming; I was 9 when this was released, so cut me some slack. - DirectorRobert EggersStarsAnya Taylor-JoyRalph InesonKate DickieA family in 1630s New England is torn apart by the forces of witchcraft, black magic and possession.Such an awesomely creepy, atmospheric movie.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but the ending felt almost... empowering in a way.
Wouldst thou like to live deliciously? - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordCate BlanchettShia LaBeoufIndiana Jones becomes entangled in a Soviet plot to uncover the secret behind mysterious artifacts known as the Crystal Skulls.I appreciate what they tried to achieve here, and while it's my least favorite of the 4 (so far) Indy movies, I think it's a bit underrated and doesn't deserve the hate it got due to falling short of the unrealistic hype.
Except perhaps for the ridiculous scene with Shia swinging through the trees with monkeys. That was bad. - DirectorLeonard NimoyStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyAdmiral Kirk and his bridge crew risk their careers stealing the decommissioned U.S.S. Enterprise to return to the restricted Genesis Planet to recover Spock's body.I think this is the first film I encountered where a character featured in multiple films (Saavik in this case) is played by a different actor. That always messes with my suspension of disbelief - much better to just introduce a new character in my opinion. Especially in this case - there was no significant reason why it had to be the same Vulcan as in Khan.
But overall I enjoyed this one. - DirectorWilliam ShatnerStarsWilliam ShatnerLeonard NimoyDeForest KelleyCaptain Kirk and his crew must deal with Mr. Spock's long-lost half-brother who hijacks the Enterprise for an obsessive search for God at the center of the galaxy.I like this more than most Trek fans. It really revealed a bit more of the beloved characters. I think it dealt with the God issue in a way that anyone (religious or non) could relate to. The power and influence a person who could relieve such pain would have...
- DirectorJonathan FrakesStarsPatrick StewartJonathan FrakesBrent SpinerWhen the crew of the Enterprise learn of a Federation conspiracy against the inhabitants of a unique planet, Captain Picard begins an open rebellion. It was alright, it had some fun moments, some idyllic settings and way of life (hearkens back to the season 1 episode Justice almost)...but it just seemed to miss the mark, especially following First Contact.
- DirectorStuart BairdStarsPatrick StewartJonathan FrakesBrent SpinerThe Enterprise is diverted to the Romulan homeworld Romulus, supposedly because they want to negotiate a peace treaty. Captain Picard and his crew discover a serious threat to the Federation once Praetor Shinzon plans to attack Earth. This was very ambitious...loved the ship (both of them) and the effects, but ultimately the plot felt too similar to Khan. I didn't like how they handled Data, and essentially ignored Wesley (yeah he's there - seated at a table on the extreme far left side of a shot or two at the party in the beginning of the film).
Would have preferred more of a Romulan presence. - DirectorStanley KubrickStarsTom CruiseNicole KidmanTodd FieldA Manhattan doctor embarks on a bizarre, night-long odyssey after his wife's admission of unfulfilled longing. This really hit home, as far as the guy's sense of unfulfillment in life and yearning for something more, something sensual and forbidden...
Some lump this with 50 Shades of Grey as being misleading or harmful to the public's perception of BDSM. That's unfortunate and a bit unfair, as not only is this is a far better film, but it was never presented as having anything to do with BDSM - in fact the scene in question is such a minor part, it's more a metaphor, a vehicle to take the main character through temptation of the exotic and the shock at what he discovers than an attempt to depict any kind of typical adult party setting. - DirectorRidley ScottStarsTom CruiseMia SaraTim CurryA young man must stop the Lord of Darkness from destroying daylight and marrying the woman he loves.Very cool - loved the woodland ambience, especially the transition parts when he dives for the ring...Tim Curry was just awesome. Though I must say I prefer the theatrical version over the director’s cut (sorry Ridley and Jerry!).
- DirectorDon CoscarelliStarsMarc SingerTanya RobertsRip TornA sword-and-sorcery fantasy about a young man's search for revenge. Armed with supernatural powers, the handsome hero and his animal allies wage war against marauding forces.Conan knock-off...but I enjoyed it a lot as a kid (especially since I could never find Conan on TV, yet Beastmaster was on TBS practically every week). Many years later when I got the DVD, I liked it even better when I finally got to see the (PG!) nudity that had always been edited out of the broadcast version.
This film (along with A View to a Kill) was directly responsible for a crush on Tanya Roberts. - DirectorHarry WinerStarsKate CapshawLea ThompsonKelly PrestonThe young attendees of a space camp find themselves in space for real when their shuttle is accidentally launched into orbit.Fun, if unrealistic. It seemed real enough when I was 9 - the first time I watched it, I remember thinking, "they really sent kids to space to film a movie?!"
- DirectorAlex ProyasStarsBrandon LeeMichael WincottRochelle DavisA man brutally murdered comes back to life as an undead avenger of his and his fiancée's murder.Edgy neo-noir, very dark - and not just visually - with a great dark and gritty soundtrack to match. RIP Brandon.
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaOscar IsaacAs a new threat to the galaxy rises, Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace. Some plot holes (how were the remnants of the empire even allowed to reorganize?), and a bit too derivative of Episode IV. Rey's character development - at least with regard to her Force powers - seemed a bit... *forced*. Still, I found this more enjoyable than the prequels.
- DirectorGeorge LucasStarsEwan McGregorLiam NeesonNatalie PortmanTwo Jedi escape a hostile blockade to find allies and come across a young boy who may bring balance to the Force, but the long dormant Sith resurface to claim their original glory.I really wanted to love this. The trailer really promised a lot. I don't think it's a complete failure, but it included too many unnecessary distractions - the overdone comic relief (Jar Jar and even the Trade Federation...things, especially their voices), the unsolicited "science" behind the Force (midichlorians), the ridiculous immaculate conception, the too-long pod racing scene, the odd refusal of the Jedi Council to train the boy (and the odder defiance of Qui-Gon Jinn to do it anyway [and the oddest capitulation of the Council after Jinn's death to allow the boy to be trained after all])...and Jake Lloyd's speaking scenes. I can't hold that entirely against him; he was just a kid after all, but it could have been better - perhaps with more liberal editing or more varied takes. A lot of the dialog overall could have been a bit more inspired. And then there's the (Sidius's) plot, which seems a bit...confused.
In the end there was probably no way it could have lived up to everyone's expectations - it was the first Star Wars film in 16 years, and anything less than perfection was doomed. Overall it does feel like Star Wars to me. Just not...good Star Wars. - DirectorGeorge LucasStarsHayden ChristensenNatalie PortmanEwan McGregorTen years after initially meeting, Anakin Skywalker shares a forbidden romance with Padmé Amidala, while Obi-Wan Kenobi discovers a secret clone army crafted for the Jedi.Where to start...flat dialog, Anakin's erratic emotions (granted he's a teen but it could have been handled a bit more convincingly), a romance that feels forced (haha), i.e. Padme's rapid transition from creeped-out to "I love you" (damn wish I had that effect) despite Anakin's childish genocidal outburst, plot holes (really it's been years and you're suddenly now going back to find your mom?), toilet-humor names (Dooku? really?), surprise George-service (jet-equipped R2?), still overdone comic relief (C-3PO's foundry antics), ridiculous Yodacrobatics, a clone army with no apparent reason (why bother with clones since you already have droids? if droids suck, why bother with them you already have clones in the oven? and who's paying for all this?), the Jedi Council's baffling flippant acceptance of said clone army without explanation and not a small amount of sinister circumstances...
At least Ewan McGregor was coherent. Kamino was kinda cool. Those (initially) silent space bombs were novel.
George, this was supposed to redeem Star Wars after the disappointment that was Phantom Menace. Maybe you need less yes-men around you. - DirectorGeorge LucasStarsHayden ChristensenNatalie PortmanEwan McGregorThree years into the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi pursues a new threat, while Anakin Skywalker is lured by Chancellor Palpatine into a sinister plot to rule the galaxy.I suppose I found this one the least disappointing of the prequels. The only things that bothered me were the too-late introduction of what was supposed to be a rather significant character (General Grievous - ugh more names an 8 year old might have concocted) which felt entirely unnecessary as a result, Anakin's baffling shrug-and-surrender to the dark side, Palpatine's ridiculous bassed-out voice right afterward...
Anakin's dark side seduction was really the most disappointing - I was hoping for a delicately, carefully constructed treatment, one in which I might actually be encouraged to empathize with the guy, the tragic fallen hero, where changing to an evil bastard might somehow feel justified - after all, everyone is the hero of their own story - nope, we basically got "dang, I just chopped a Jedi Master's arms off - oh well, might as well not half-ass it - let's go kill children and stuff and save my wife that I'll instantly hate in a few minutes!"
Order 66 was kind of cool. The inevitable showdown fans had been anticipating since the announcement of Episode I was decently epic...Vader suit and James Earl Jones was fun fan-service...
"Lost the will to live"? Oh for crying out loud. - DirectorWillard HuyckStarsLea ThompsonJeffrey JonesTim RobbinsA sarcastic humanoid duck is pulled from his homeworld to Earth where he must stop an alien invasion with the help of a nerdy scientist and a struggling female rock singer. To this day I don't think Beverly was leading Howard on...I firmly believe she would totally have done duck.
- DirectorRon HowardStarsVal KilmerJoanne WhalleyWarwick DavisA young farmer is chosen to undertake a perilous journey in order to protect a special baby from an evil queen.Meh, was alright.
- DirectorJim HensonFrank OzStarsJim HensonKathryn MullenFrank OzOn another planet in the distant past, a Gelfling embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of a magical crystal, and to restore order to his world. One of the earliest films I can remember that induced strange feelings toward girls...a smidgeon of jealousy that girls were different (and arguably superior - she had wings and he didn't); a tender grief and chivalrous outrage at her torture and assault...
Anyway this film left a lasting impression on a young mind. - DirectorJohn BoormanStarsNigel TerryHelen MirrenNicholas ClayMerlin the magician helps Arthur Pendragon unite the Britons around the Round Table of Camelot, even as dark forces conspire to tear it apart.Awesome Arthurian portrayal; full of complexities of human emotion, taboo love...
- DirectorRob ReinerStarsCary ElwesMandy PatinkinRobin WrightA bedridden boy's grandfather reads him the story of a farmboy-turned-pirate who encounters numerous obstacles, enemies and allies in his quest to be reunited with his true love.Eminently quotable, delightful and hilarious!
- DirectorByron HowardRich MooreJared BushStarsGinnifer GoodwinJason BatemanIdris ElbaIn a city of anthropomorphic animals, a rookie bunny cop and a cynical con artist fox must work together to uncover a conspiracy.
- DirectorTim MillerStarsRyan ReynoldsMorena BaccarinT.J. MillerA wisecracking mercenary gets experimented on and becomes immortal yet hideously scarred, and sets out to track down the man who ruined his looks.
- DirectorSam Taylor-JohnsonStarsDakota JohnsonJamie DornanJennifer EhleLiterature student Anastasia Steele's life changes forever when she meets handsome, yet tormented, billionaire Christian Grey.Titillating, but it’s unfortunate that BDSM is so often portrayed in a rather unhealthy and unrealistic way.
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsChanning TatumAlex PettyferOlivia MunnA male stripper teaches a younger performer how to party, pick up women, and make easy money.Yeah these guys are hot. I’m at once jealous... and aroused.
- DirectorGregory JacobsStarsChanning TatumJoe ManganielloMatt BomerThree years after Mike bowed out of the stripper life at the top of his game, he and the remaining Kings of Tampa hit the road to Myrtle Beach to put on one last blow-out performance.Especially enjoyed Channing and Joe. Those moves, just... dayam.
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsJoBeth WilliamsHeather O'RourkeCraig T. NelsonA family's home is haunted by a host of demonic ghosts. This really messed with me when I first saw it as a kid, probably around the same age as the boy. Certainly made some unforgettable memories.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn HurtThe crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin.Unfamiliar. Unsettling. Scary as hell.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny LloydA family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.
- DirectorRuben FleischerStarsJesse EisenbergEmma StoneWoody HarrelsonA shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, a gun-toting bruiser in search of the last Twinkie and a pair of sisters striving to get to an amusement park join forces in a trek across a zombie-filled America.Woody, coconut texture, Bill Murray, Wichita, cardio, doubletap. Love it all!
- DirectorTim BurtonStarsJohnny DeppChristina RicciMiranda RichardsonIchabod Crane is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the decapitations of three people; the culprit is legendary apparition The Headless Horseman.I love Tim Burton’s aesthetic, the cast, the positive portrayal of witchcraft, a screen kiss for the ages...

- DirectorDaniel MyrickEduardo SánchezStarsHeather DonahueMichael C. - DirectorWes CravenStarsHeather LangenkampJohnny DeppRobert EnglundTeenager Nancy Thompson must uncover the dark truth concealed by her parents after she and her friends become targets of the spirit of a serial killer with a bladed glove in their dreams, in which if they die, it kills them in real life.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsHal HolbrookLeslie NielsenAdrienne Barbeau"Creepshow" is a 1982 movie that tells five grisly tales from a children's comic book: a murdered father rising from his grave, a bizarre meteor, a vengeful husband, a mysterious crate's occupant, and a plague of cockroaches.Saw this as a kid, it kept me up at night. Especially The Crate.
- DirectorJoe AlvesStarsDennis QuaidBess ArmstrongSimon MacCorkindaleA giant thirty-five-foot shark becomes trapped in a SeaWorld theme park and it's up to the sons of police chief Brody to rescue everyone.
- DirectorFred DekkerStarsAndre GowerRobby KigerStephen MachtA group of young monster fanatics attempts to save their hometown from Count Dracula and his monsters.I loved this one as a kid; it was like The Goonies meets horror. Upon recently rewatching though, I had to rescore it as I realized how just plain derivative it is of that prior (and superior) title, and I'm rather more averse to the homophobia and sexism and body shaming (even Horace's friends address him as Fat Kid), even if these are presented as adolescent immaturities. It's a shame this fun romp is marred by these issues. See ya later, band-aid breath!
- DirectorBrian GibsonStarsJoBeth WilliamsCraig T. NelsonHeather O'RourkeThe Freeling family have a new house, but their troubles with supernatural forces don't seem to be over. Not quite as good as the original, but still pretty freaky

- DirectorJohn Carl BuechlerStarsMichael MoriartyShelley HackNoah HathawayA wicked troll king in search of a mystical ring that will transform him to human form invades a San Francisco apartment complex where a powerful witch lives.I liked this one. The troll just wants a forest to live in, what's wrong with that? Sonny Bono, Noah Hathaway (as "Harry Potter" haha). And a good witch.
- DirectorAndrew FlemingStarsRobin TunneyFairuza BalkNeve CampbellA newcomer to a Catholic prep high school falls in with a trio of outcast teenage girls who practice witchcraft, and they all soon conjure up various spells and curses against those who anger them. One of my favorite witchcraft movies. Fairuza rocked this!
- DirectorJan de BontStarsLiam NeesonCatherine Zeta-JonesOwen WilsonDr Marrow enlists Theo, Luke and Nell for a study of sleep disorders at the Hill House. As soon as the terrifying truth about the mansion is revealed, everyone is found fighting for their lives.Creepy - that one door I found particularly disturbing and grotesque.
The first time I can remember seeing an overtly bisexual character in a film (played by Catherine Zeta-Jones no less). - DirectorFrank MarshallStarsJeff DanielsJulian SandsJohn GoodmanA new species of South American killer spider hitches a lift to a small California town in a coffin and starts to breed, leaving a trail of deaths that puzzle and terrify the young doctor newly arrived in town with his family.Such a creepy spider movie (but didn't do spider-human relations any favors - it probably resulted in even more fear of spiders among the populace). I must admit to having a bit of this, but I manage to keep it pretty well suppressed.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsChristopher ReeveKirstie AlleyLinda KozlowskiA small town's women give birth to unfriendly alien children posing as humans.
- DirectorAnne GoursaudStarsMartin KempRebecca FerrattiAlyssa MilanoAn 18-year-old college freshman is seduced by a handsome vampire lover who introduces her to a dark world of carnal desires. Some quite hot scenes. Made me crush on Alyssa Milano.
- DirectorTobe HooperStarsRobert EnglundTed LevineDaniel MatmorA laundry-folding machine has been possessed by a demon, causing it to develop homicidal tendencies.More suspense than horror - with one death scene I found particularly squicky. It got a bit ludicrous toward the end.
- DirectorSteve BeckStarsTony ShalhoubShannon ElizabethEmbeth DavidtzWhen Cyrus Kriticos, a very rich collector of unique things, dies, he leaves his house, fortune, and his prized collection of ghosts.Cool sets, genuinely scary at times, and characters making idiotic choices.
- DirectorRob MinkoffStarsEddie MurphyMarsha ThomasonJennifer TillyA realtor and his wife and children are summoned to a mansion, which they soon discover is haunted, and while they attempt to escape, he learns an important lesson about the family he has neglected.Cheesy, but I kinda like it. Terence Stamp is great as always, and Marsha Thomason is simply gorgeous
- DirectorJoe BerlingerStarsJeffrey DonovanStephen Barker TurnerErica LeerhsenA group of tourists arrives in Burkittsville, Maryland after seeing The Blair Witch Project (1999) to explore the mythology and phenomenon, only to come face to face with their own neuroses and possibly the witch herself.Interesting, but lacked the found footage visceralness of the original.
I remember being excited for this, in part because one of the characters was Wiccan, which generated quite a buzz within the online pagan community - Peg Aloi at Witchvox even did a little web interview discussing that right around the time of its release.
