Director: Gary Jones | Stars: Amber Connor, Joe Estevez, Dan Haggerty, Thomas Downey

Votes: 1,311 | Gross: $0.00M

A group of young offenders on a court-ordered hiking trip get hunted down and murdered by the literal Paul Bunyan. And as much as I hate to admit it, they actually make that ridiculous concept work. Unfortunately, there is something of an overuse of average to bad CG effects. Like, obviously they needed to use compositing to make Paul Bunyan giant, but the CG gore ends up looking like the characters are paper cutouts.

16. Creature from Cannibal Creek (2019)

80 min | Horror

Nature spawns a creature driven by vengeance to destroy a group of cold-blooded cannibals.

Director: John Migliore | Stars: Deborah Jayne Reilly Smith, Simon Wheeldon, Jim Ordolis, Lena Montecalvo

Votes: 151

A movie that combines a cannibal caper and creature feature to creature something that doesn't work as either. There's a lot of time spent with people chained up waiting to be killed and eaten, but there is literally no weight to those scenes as the characters are just kinda surely and bitchy about the situation instead of expressing any kind of genuine fear. As for the creature, one of the victims escapes and gets turned into a monster for no particular reason. It seems like it's supposed to be for vengeance, but then the monster then just kills indiscriminately. Overall it's just like, two different movies happening at the same time, and neither of them are very good. Also they do that thing very common in lower-end horror where they keep referencing much better movies—Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, Friday the 13th Part VII, Creepshow, etc—which just reminds you of much better movies.

3/10

22. Dolls (1986)

R | 77 min | Horror

55 Metascore

Director: Stuart Gordon | Stars: Ian Patrick Williams, Carolyn Purdy-Gordon, Carrie Lorraine, Guy Rolfe

Votes: 12,853

Good killer doll movie overall. However, some of the themes, and especially the ending, make it feel a bit like an R-rated Goosebumps story. Not saying that's a bad thing, just that that’s vibe I get from the movie.

7/10

23. Dolly Dearest (1991)

R | 93 min | Comedy, Drama, Horror

A toy manufacturer buys the 'Dolly Dearest' factory in Mexico, where the malevolent spirit of Sanzia, a devil child, has taken refuge in one of the porcelain dolls, and eventually takes control of his daughter.

Director: Maria Lease | Stars: Denise Crosby, Sam Bottoms, Rip Torn, Chris Demetral

Votes: 3,454

A movie that combines the killer doll and possession genres, in a way that adds something to the standard possession story, but takes a bit away from the killer doll angle. The influence of Child's Play is more than a little obvious, and while they do a very good job with the doll effects, but when compared to something like Child's Play there's just a substantial lack in the story. The doll is just evil because it's possessed by an evil spirit, which is evil because it's just evil. There isn't any real identity there or motivation behind its actions, other than being evil.

5/10

24. Evil Bong (2006)

Not Rated | 86 min | Comedy, Horror

A group of friends acquire a "Bong" that is possessed by a terrifying demon, but they don't realize it until they start smoking it and begin to imagine things - or maybe it's true everything that is happening?

Director: Charles Band | Stars: David Weidoff, John Patrick Jordan, Mitch Eakins, Brian Lloyd

Votes: 3,444

One of those movies that you watch expecting it to be funny, only to learn that the “humor” is based entirely around the fact that it references marijuana, and the start of the saddest chapter of Charles Band's career. Devoid of any value for anyone who wouldn't stare at a blank screen for 90 minutes if told that a pot leaf might appear on it.

And just in case you had any hope for the current state of horror, this movie has six sequels, and the crossover Gingerdead Man vs Evil Bong.

Director: John Gulager | Stars: Navi Rawat, Krista Allen, Balthazar Getty, Judah Friedlander

Votes: 33,867 | Gross: $0.05M

Big scary monsters This movie is everything Slither (2006) was advertised to be. (4/5)

28. Frogs (1972)

PG | 91 min | Horror, Mystery, Sci-Fi

51 Metascore

A group of helpless victims celebrate a birthday on an island estate crawling with killer amphibians, birds, insects, and reptiles.

Director: George McCowan | Stars: Ray Milland, Sam Elliott, Joan Van Ark, Adam Roarke

Votes: 7,655 | Gross: $0.48M

With a title like Frogs, you could be forgiven for assuming this movie was about killer frogs. Whereas in reality, the frogs don't really do much killing, leaving that to the snakes, gators, and other swamp critters while they just hand back and offer moral support. Kinda fun, but still average at best; unless you happen to really like swamp critters.

5/10

29. Gargoyles (1972 TV Movie)

Not Rated | 74 min | Horror

An anthropologist/paleontologist and his daughter, while travelling through the southwestern U.S., stumble upon a colony of living, breathing gargoyles.

Director: Bill Norton | Stars: Cornel Wilde, Jennifer Salt, Grayson Hall, Bernie Casey

Votes: 3,773

A 70s made-for-TV monster movie with some degree of charm. The creature effects look pretty good, and there is an interesting concept behind it, depicting gargoyles as a demonic antithesis to humans who rise and attempt to conquer the earth every 600 years. Unfortunately, it barely ever even mentions that narrative, and not knowing it wouldn't really even change the plot. Overall, it's just another movie that just kinda takes you from the beginning to the end without making much impact.

5/10

30. Ghoulies (1984)

PG-13 | 81 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror

26 Metascore

A young man and his girlfriend move into an old mansion home, where he becomes possessed by a desire to control ancient demons.

Director: Luca Bercovici | Stars: Peter Liapis, Lisa Pelikan, Michael Des Barres, Jack Nance

Votes: 10,391 | Gross: $35.00M

A fairly standard Gremlins knockoff. While they look neat, the titular ghoulies don't really do much other than stand around. And when they actually do something, it's fairly unimpressive with their very limited movement. (5/10)

31. Ghoulies II (1987)

PG-13 | 89 min | Comedy, Horror

The Ghoulies wreak havoc at an amusement park, disposing of those who mistake them for mere fairground attractions.

Director: Albert Band | Stars: Damon Martin, Royal Dano, Phil Fondacaro, J. Downing

Votes: 5,586

Focuses much more heavily on the ghoulies than its predecessor. The puppets have been improved quite a bit in both appearance and functionality, but the overall tone is inconsistently wacky. (6/10)

32. Ghoulies Go to College (1990 Video)

R | 94 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror

A college teacher brings the little creatures back to his campus, where they proceed to terrorize the faculty and students.

Director: John Carl Buechler | Stars: Evan MacKenzie, Kevin McCarthy, Eva LaRue, John R. Johnston

Votes: 2,921

Only three ghoulies this time, and they talk now, but any horror that the previous films had has been dropped in favor of slapstick and one-liners. Also, the first Ghoulies to feature a toilet as a plot element. (5/10)

33. Ghoulies IV (1994 Video)

R | 84 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror

A retired occultist turned police officer must battle a former lover as she attempts to summon forth demonic forces after escaping an asylum.

Director: Jim Wynorski | Stars: Peter Liapis, Barbara Alyn Woods, Stacie Randall, Raquel Krelle

Votes: 2,317

Despite being directly tied to the first, it barely feels like a Ghoulies movie. Instead of the iconic puppets, we have actors in generic-looking costumes. Also, the ghoulies are more or less inconsequential to the plot. (4/10)

34. The Giant Spider Invasion (1975)

PG | 84 min | Horror, Sci-Fi

Giant spiders from another dimension invade Wisconsin.

Director: Bill Rebane | Stars: Steve Brodie, Barbara Hale, Robert Easton, Leslie Parrish

Votes: 4,599 | Gross: $0.29M

GiantThis movie may have the worst giant spider ever committed to film. However, there is a weird quality to it where it's so fake that it's actually endearing. Other than that, it's 1950s quality in the 1970s. (4/10)

35. The Gingerdead Man (2005)

Not Rated | 70 min | Comedy, Fantasy, Horror

An evil yet adorable Gingerbread man comes to life with the soul of a convicted killer - this real life cookie monster wreaks havoc on the girl who sent the killer to the electric chair.

Directors: Joe Dante, Chuck Jones | Stars: Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, Howie Mandel, Tony Randall

Votes: 112,912 | Gross: $41.48M

As in the first movie, but this time with wacky variations

40. Grizzly (1976)

PG | 91 min | Adventure, Horror, Thriller

25 Metascore

An eighteen-foot-tall grizzly bear terrorizes a state park, leaving it up to a Park Ranger to save the day.

Director: William Girdler | Stars: Christopher George, Andrew Prine, Richard Jaeckel, Joan McCall

Votes: 5,958

In theory, a movie about a giant bear sounds great, bears are objectively terrifying. But the actual bear used—while literally being the largest bear in captivity at the time—was never really given any scale to highlight its size, and the props used in the attack scenes just looked bad. Overall, just a very "trying to be Jaws on land" feeling.

5/10

41. Grizzly II: Revenge (1983)

Not Rated | 74 min | Horror, Music, Thriller

7 Metascore

All hell breaks loose when a giant Grizzly, reacting to the slaughter of Grizzlies by poachers, attacks at a massive big-band rock concert in the National Park.

Director: André Szöts | Stars: George Clooney, Laura Dern, Charlie Sheen, Louise Fletcher

Votes: 1,682

A movie that sat on the shelf for 37 years, and was not worth the wait. It seems like they were just shy of enough footage for a complete movie, leading to a substantial about of its short run time being taken up with excessive padding footage. Seriously, there are so many extended shots of the concert and sweeping drone shots of the forest. At least they actually had a properly giant bear prop this time.

4/10

42. Hobgoblins (1988)

Not Rated | 88 min | Comedy, Horror, Sci-Fi

A young security guard must track down diminutive aliens who kill people even as they make their fantasies come true.

Director: Jeffery Scott Lando | Stars: Meghan Heffern, Rhonda Dent, Travis Watters, Shawn Bachynski

Votes: 744

A giant killer bug movie that was unfortunately made in 2005. Which of course means, discount CGI insects—and arachnids, you know how these movies like to call everything "Bugs." There are some practical effects used, which are pretty good, but incredibly minimal. For the most part, it's just the okayest CGI the filmmakers could afford swinging wildly at actresses very much looking like they're trying to react to something that isn't there.

3/10

45. Jaws (1975)

PG | 124 min | Adventure, Mystery, Thriller

87 Metascore

Director: Jerry London | Stars: Clint Walker, Robert Urich, Carl Betz, Neville Brand

Votes: 1,991

The movie about a killer bulldozer. And one that's quite a bit better than a movie about a killer bulldozer has any right to be. It's not the most entertaining film ever made, but it definitely goes beyond the bare minimum. (5/10)

49. The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra (2001)

A very solid and very British film—it even features popular Doctor Who Tom Baker. However, it does suffer a bit from having two stories, neither of which feel s like it's being fully explored.

Sharksploitation is a very hit-or-miss genre. Usually, miss... as it is here. I think the shark was supposed to be Satan, I'm honestly not sure. I also think the plot was supposed to be coherent, once again, not sure though. (2/10)

Another... let's just say "Interesting" offering from Wave Video, a company best known for producing films that seem like they might be illegal, but probably aren't. Which also makes some of their catalog rare enough to make that a noteworthy feature. As is the case with The Painting of Horror, a movie only released as a "B film" on an incredibly obscure double feature VHS tape. It's the sort of thing where the experience of finding the movie is much more exciting than actually watching it.

As for the actual movie, it opens with a woman dressing, undressing, showering, and then dressing again, all without any nudity. Mostly it's a bunch of nothing occasionally cutting away to a woman dancing on a table in what looks like—and probably is—someone's garage. The painting does kill someone, but the scene drags out in a very specific way that makes it obvious that it was intended for someone who gets off of women being suffocated. And normally I wouldn't recommend watching something this devoid of content, but like, it's only 20 minutes, so you might as well just for the experience of it.

A movie that on its own would have been fine, but unfortunately does not live up to the expectations set by having the name Clive Barker attacked to it. Overall it is your standard monster movie: monster shows up, kills some people, get's a little bit of backstory, then at the last minute some weakness is discovered and exploited to defeat them. As I said, if you just want to watch a thing kill some people, it's good for that. However, this specific thing, is just kinda unremarkable, both in appearance and backstory. And quite a far cry from the penis-headed horror that Clive Barker had envisioned.

This is a movie about an evil shark that acquires Christmas-themed powers from eating an evil Santa, who is brought to life from comic book with a magic pen. Do they explain any of this? No. Do they need to explain any of this? Also no. This movie is unashamedly stupid and never pretends to be anything else. It is absolutely lovely.

Good for what it is. If you want a movie about giant wasps, this is that thing. As with most movies of this type, the whole setup leading to giant wasps is kinda forgettable, and almost immediately becomes inconsequential. But when you do get to the wasps, it's a fun monster movie with a slight zombie-esqe twist to it. The practical wasps look great, but the CGI ones look a little floaty and plasticy, especially in daylight, like something from a mid-2000s Sci-Fi Pictures original.

I was not expecting a movie about giant ticks starring Seth Green to be good, and in a rare turn of events, I was wrong. It's not great, but it is an entertaining watch with good effects and just enough comedy to make it fun, without making it stupid.
