Best weird/horror movies on free streaming
There is a lot of poop out there on free streaming sites, but a there are also a few really great movies that are thought provoking, unsettling, and awesome. Typically, my tastes run toward the strange. On this list, I'm trying to stay away from well-known movies or directors like David Lynch or John Carpenter.
Feel free to message me if you have a recommendation. I primarily use Netflix & Amazon Prime for movie streaming (or Youtube). There may be movies on Hulu, Redbox, etc that should appear on this list. Feel free to comment or make recommendations!

- DirectorRichard RaaphorstStarsRobert GwilymHon Ping TangAlexander TerentyevIn the dying days of WWII, a battalion of Russian soldiers is lured into the secret lab of a deranged scientist and forced to face off against an army of horrific flesh-and-metal war machines.Don't let the found footage approach deter you from checking this one out. This isn't a Blair Witch clone or in the same vein as The Frankenstein Theory (which sucked). It's almost like a first-person shooter video game in movie form. If nothing else, watch the movie for Karel Roden's performance as the Doc.
- DirectorPanos CosmatosStarsEva BourneMichael J RogersScott HylandsDespite being under heavy sedation, a young woman tries to make her way out of the Arboria Institute, a secluded, quasifuturistic commune.Probably not for everyone. Give it a try if you like 2001 or Solaris. It's got an amazing soundtrack that really feeds into the sterile 80s sci-fi vibe.
- DirectorQuentin DupieuxStarsStephen SpinellaRoxane MesquidaWings HauserA homicidal car tire, discovering it has destructive psionic power, sets its sights on a desert town once a mysterious woman becomes its obsession. There are so many levels to this film. Surreal, funny, and well-made. Rubber is the closest thing I've seen to a Bunuel movie in years. The Netflix description makes it sound stupid, but it's a true hidden gem.
- DirectorMatthew AvantStarsDave PotterJed HimelMatthew AvantTwo documentary filmmakers accidentally uncover the greatest moon secret the world has never known, and the powerful organization determined to keep it that way.I wish more movies like this would get better promotion. A true sci-fi skewer of Scientology. It can be a very dense film, so make sure you in the mood for a movie that requires a lot of attention when you watch it.
- DirectorsJustin BensonAaron MoorheadStarsPeter CilellaVinny CurranEmily MontagueA man imprisons his estranged junkie friend in an isolated cabin in the boonies of San Diego to force him through a week of sobriety, but the events of that week are being mysteriously manipulated. This will probably be hit and miss with a lot of people. It's not really a horror movie, but it's not sci-fi either. Both main characters give good performances that drive Resolution forward to an interesting conclusion.
- DirectorEli CraigStarsTyler LabineAlan TudykKatrina BowdenAffable hillbillies Tucker and Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are mistaken for murderers by a group of preppy college students.Solid horror/comedy. Really fun movie with lots of gore. Recommended for fans of Evil Dead 2 and 3 (and who isn't).
- DirectorTommy WirkolaStarsJeppe Beck LaursenCharlotte FrognerJenny SkavlanA ski vacation turns horrific for a group of medical students, as they find themselves confronted by an unimaginable menace: Nazi zombies. Not your average zombie movie. I've recommended this film to a few of my fellow horror fans and no one has been disappointed. There is humor and gore in equal servings.
- DirectorJason BankerStarsJames DavidsonSara Anne JonesWhitleigh HigueraA portrait of contemporary youth culture, where the lines between reality and fiction are blurred with often frightening results.Toad Road is everything I love about the indie movie scene. It's a drama that could have been made by a slightly less nihilistic Harmony Korine. If you are put off by the first 20 minutes or so, stick with it. There is a pretty good character drama that takes over in act 2. Also, after you see it, I highly recommend checking out the tragic story of the main actress, Sara Anne Jones.
- DirectorPeter StricklandStarsToby JonesAntonio MancinoGuido AdorniA sound engineer's work for an Italian horror studio becomes a terrifying case of life imitating art.Eminently weird movie. The story is a puzzle that seems straightforward until the last 30 minutes takes a hard left turn. The best part about BSS is that it rewards repeat viewings with a multilayered story that plays with reality. If you are a fan of Italian horror or giallo, this is a lot of fun.
- DirectorsJen SoskaSylvia SoskaStarsKatharine IsabelleAntonio CupoTristan RiskThe allure of easy money sends Mary Mason, a medical student, into the world of underground surgeries which ends up leaving more marks on her than her so-called "freakish" clients.American Mary has built a reputation for itself of being disturbing with it's grounding in the hard core body modification community. If you can handle Se7en, American Mary is no sweat. Katharine Isabelle plays the titular Mary perfectly with enough substance to balance the style. Hidden gem cult film in the making.
- DirectorGiulio ParadisiStarsMel FerrerGlenn FordLance HenriksenThe soul of a young girl with telekinetic powers and her mother become the prize in a battle between good ETs and evil ETs.You can find this one on Amazon Prime. Abought as cult a movie as one can want. This is the kind of stuff that they only made in the 70s and early 80s.
- DirectorBen WheatleyStarsJulian BarrattPeter FerdinandoRichard GloverAmid the Civil War in 17th-century England, a group of deserters flee from battle through an overgrown field. Captured by an alchemist, the men are forced to help him search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field.Amazon Prime. Equal parts beautiful and weird, highly recommended for fans of Lynch or Bunuel. If you've ever seen "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," same kind of feel here. The story is never really fully explained, giving it that dream logic kind of flow. I'd recommend reading synopses before watching the film because it gives context for some of the faery legends that aren't commonly known in the US.
- DirectorsWillard HuyckGloria KatzStarsMichael GreerMarianna HillJoy BangA young woman goes searching for her missing artist father. Her journey takes her to a strange Californian seaside town governed by a mysterious undead cult.Amazon Prime again. Dreamy horror movie with a troubled past of cuts and re-edits. The end result is a movie that barely makes sense...in a good way. Messiah of Evil is very successful at creating a creepy atmosphere that follows its own rules that give logic the finger.
- DirectorGraham ReznickStarsBenjamin DickinsonDuncan SkilesChristopher FordThree young ad-men enter the woods for a photo shoot, but a girlfriend's mysterious disappearance sparks a harrowing descent into unreality.I found this on Amazon Prime, but might be on other services. The writeup makes it sound really generic, but it's anything but. Like Toad Road and Black Rainbow, this hallucinatory film follows its own nightmare logic. Definitely a slow burner. Stick with it because it's deliberately paced to pull the rug out from under you, just like Lynch's Mulholland Drive.
