Mai Qiang is a 30-year old bachelor, withdrawn, with little in his life besides his job at an isolated signal station along the Yangtze River and his ink drawings he uses as toilet paper. Chen Qing is a hotel clerk, a widow with a young child and an undemanding relationship with her boss Lao Mo. Lao believes she has been raped, so he reports the crime to Wu Gang, the neighborhood cop. Wu investigates, but Chen is uncooperative. Lao then identifies Mai, who is detained and questioned. After Wu gets to the truth of the incident, Mai tries to break out of his loneliness and connect to Chen.

SUWISAL is a successful, middle-aged company director, but he has a melancholic personality and is very forgetful. His beautiful young fiancée finds herself having to remind him of daily appointments, special occasions and routine things. Suwisal is a reluctant husband-to-be. He has casual relationships with other women and appears to be troubled by something deep in his psyche- something he tries to forget in order to maintain emotional stability. This stability is suddenly upset when he is called to serve on a jury at a murder trial. The defendant is a young sex-worker accused of murdering a client. Suwisal recognizes her as PIYUM, the young servant from his aunt's house, whom he knew twenty five years ago. He had a sexual encounter with her and made her pregnant, but refuse to see her again and help her through the difficulties. Suwisal is not sure if Piyum recognizes him, She says nothing. He is advised to remain in the jury and he votes with the majority to find her guilty as charged. she is sentenced to ten years imprisonment. But we see that it is Suwisal who has been sentenced to lifetime of guilt, remorse and despair. He now feels he should share some responsibility for the life Piyum was forced to lead. He tries to lodge an appeal of her behalf but he is advised against this because of the adverse consequences if his past becomes public knowledge. Suwisal gets angry. Nobody seems to understand his need to rectify the wrongdoing of twenty five years ago. He is accused of acting like a child, and of only wanting to satisfy his conscience because he can never change what he did. But Suwisal persists. He visits Piyum in prison and offers her help. Did Piyum recognized him at the trail? Does she accept his help? Is Suwisal released from his lifetime of torment? We are given the answer in the last few frames of the film.

Motel Cactus consists of four episodes, all of which take place in Room 407 of Motel Cactus, a love hotel in Seoul: (1.) A girl celebrates her birthday with her boyfriend, because it is the only place she feels entirely secure with him. (2.) A student has rented room 407 for several hours to shoot a scene with a girl for his video film, a college project. (3.) A salesman meets a woman in a bar. Both very drunk, they arrive in room 407. Afterwards he is back in the room, alone. (4.) He is soon joined by his old love from his college days. Both are vaguely hoping to rekindle their old relationship.

One day Rajat decides to kidnap a child. But before he can work out a proper plan, a mysterious stranger gives him old documents, court transcripts and a partly burned photo from his childhood. This disturbing picture is just what confirms Rajat's determination to carry out his plan. His accomplices are a taxi driver and a sign painter. They set of on a strange journey with the kidnapped child, getting more and more entangled in weired experiences and frightening encounters. Crossing a dark forest they suddenly come upon a ruined house. Here the trio meets Tarak Das, the stubborn housekeeper who firmly belives that he can eventually cure the hopeless condition of his little spastic child. Meanwhile the kidnapped child gets worse and worse. Worry and fear only add to the confusion. But then it becomes clear that the picture on the partly burned photo resembles this child.
