My Top 100 Film Directors

Bernardo Bertolucci is an Italian director whose films (regardless of quality) are uniformly beautiful. The film in which the beauty is most matched by quality is The Last Emperor, where he brings early 20th century China to life.

The German Tom Tykwer first came to the wider world's attention with the ever so slightly mental Run Lola Run, which follows a race against time for the titular Lola to get money for her boyfriend.

He also impresses with Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer, but the highlight of his career (artistically, if not financially) is undoubtedly Cloud Atlas, in which he collaborates with Andy and Lana Wachowski to create one of the most unique movies of the last 20 years.

The Midlands-born director, Shane Meadows' teenage years were spent committing petty crime which inspired his best film so far, This Is England.

A tale of skinhead culture, and its descent into violent nationalism in the 80's through the eyes of an adolescent boy, This Is England has gone on to spawn a franchise of sorts with two TV mini-series following the characters in later years.

Elsewhere, Dead Man's Shoes is a chilling revenge tale.

The son of David Bowie has two movies to his name so far, both of which are imaginitive science fiction.

The two couldn't be much more different though, with Moon being a claustrophobic thriller with a minimal cast, and Source Code being more of an action movie with Groundhog Day-type trappings.

Jones' handling of both bodes well for the Warcraft movie.

Marquand gets into this list entirely on the strength of Return Of The Jedi. The only director on this list to get in there based solely on one movie, but it's such a great movie that it's worth it.

Where's Irvin Kershner you ask? He just didn't make it... I don't think The Empire Strikes Back is as good as most people seem to.
