Best of 2018 - Indian Movies
It’s been an incredible year for Hindi movies. There are at least 5 movies in this list which are better than the best movies of the last couple of years. Between Manto, Andhadun & Tumbbad it’s difficult to say which one is better for they’re all brilliant, almost flawless movies.
Honorable mentions to Sanju, Chekka Chivantha Vaanam, and Bhavesh Joshi. They were all good, but aren’t in a top 10.
Movies I wished I could watch to further improve the list: Galli Guleiyaan, Village Rockstars, Mahanati, Mulk.

Simplistic Storytelling with an elaborate setting, and an epic backstory; Tumbbad was easily one of the most imaginative Indian movies I've ever seen. That coupled with an amazing cinematography, and Soham Shah's impeccable acting, makes it a worthy watch any day!
A very twisty tale of sorts, Andhadhun has a meandering screenplay which never fails to surprise you. An edge of the seat thriller, Andhadhun lives up to the Sriram Raghavan hype in every way.
A mirror to the social climate in today's times, Manto talks about freedom of expression, by taking a chapter out of the India-Pakistan history. It's a powerful concept, masterfully directed by Nandita Das. A couple of issues aside, Manto is a great biopic.
There's just so much energy in Mukkabaaz. It's riveting tale on Indian boxing. The central character is completely relatable, after all we've all been in a situation when it's not our skill but the people around us that become a hindrance to our success. Totally worth watching.
- DirectorShoojit SircarEstrellasVarun DhawanBanita SandhuGitanjali RaoA group of interns are going through the usual grind when suddenly an accident changes their lives. The protagonist can't get let go of it and becomes obsessed with it. What does it all lead to? Is it love or something else? With no dialogues for much of its running time, Shoorjit Sircar stirs a subtle and engaging tale which even manages to extract some humour out of its darkest scenes. It's in a similar vein to last year's Big Sick, but with a slightly different and much darker setting. If you like slow burners, there's shouldn't be anything to stopping you from watching this gem.
- DirectorHansal MehtaEstrellasRajkummar RaoRajesh TailangSatwant KaurUn relato de la historia del infame Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, un terrorista nacido en Reino Unido que secuestró y asesinó a Daniel Peral, reportero del Wall Street Journal, en el año 2002.Almost a documentary on Omar Sheikh, this is an unconventional movie in all regards. The director offers no inclination to nudge the viewer into liking or disliking its central character, and yet manages to show the heinousness of his actions with immense clarity.
- DirectorMeghna GulzarEstrellasAlia BhattVicky KaushalRajit KapoorA Kashmiri woman agrees to marry a Pakistani army officer in order to spy on Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971.The first hour or so of Raazi is more of a primer on spy-thrillers. Spoon feeding everything to the viewer, but what Raazi ultimately becomes is a thoroughly engaging spy thriller that treats its antagonists with just as much respect as its protagonists. Truly a worthy watch, Alia Bhatt delivers a stellar performance.
- DirectorDanis TanovicEstrellasEmraan HashmiGeetanjali ThapaDanny HustonAyan, a pharmaceutical salesman in Pakistan, takes on the multinational health care corporation he works for after he realizes they knowingly marketed a baby formula that's responsible for the death of hundreds of babies everyday.Tigers, a story about a Pakistani whistleblower, who was ready to take on a giant in his field, is a simple story, told with as little melodrama as possible. Tigers has a stellar and dependable ensemble that don't let the movie down.
- DirectorVetrimaaranEstrellasDhanushAmeer SultanRadha RaviA young carrom player in north Chennai becomes a reluctant participant in a war between two warring gangsters.Vetri Maaran's epic tale is stylishly shot, and engaging. A story spanning across 16 years, Vada Chennai has everything you expect from a gangster film. While there can be one too many characters at times, it's still a consistently engaging movie. This could well be Dhanush's best performance to date. Eagerly waiting for the sequel.
Basado en la leyenda urbana de ""Nale Ba"", viral en Karnataka en los años noventa."Teetering on the verge of being a cringy low IQ entertainer, Stree somehow pulls off the Horror Comedy genre with decent writing and Rajkumar Rao and Aparshakti Khuranna's epic comic timing. Casting Pankaj Tripathi was a big win for Stree too. His presence is perfectly timed to balance some of the dull moments in the movie. Stree is like a tightrope walker, it just about manages to be the comedy movie it promises to be.
