Great short stories
A short story is a narrative text with 1,500 up to 10,000 words. By definition, the form requires abruptness, wit or irony in its display of talent. Great short story writers (e.g. Machado de Assis, James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway) demonstrate the extraordinary power of economy and radical condensation. Things typically come to a head in an instant of revelation. But, the methods of those authors have been imitated to the point of rigor mortis. It is hard to choose between understated renditions of glimpsing the abyss and the more popular alternative of murder, suicide, or rape galore. The formula has often been a substitute for imagination. Besides, some of the best short stories have been were plainly massacred by the cinema. Others have been more or less well adapted. Do watch the adaptations, but do read the originals as well.
