A short documentary in Mixtec language exploring precolonial stories as conveyed by Mixtec precolonial pictorial documents. The documentary follows the rise and fall of lord Eight Deer, a precolonial Mixtec ruler. It explores his childhood, his longing for power and also his violent death. The film inter cuts images from the precolonial pictorial documents with images of daily life in the Mixtec area.

It is laid out as a realistic film, with a screenplay based on the stories of hundreds of women that are forced to choose between their children and their mate in order to sustain their families.

Our film looks at Soco Tañu U (the Ocean's Limb in Mixtec language), the fate of water running in two rivers (Rio Verde, Rio La Arena) and a sacred saltwater lagoon system (Alotengo). Climate change, water scarcity and drought pit against each other not just groups of people but different world views. For indigenous Mixtec communities upstream, the fate of water is in the hands of gods and rain goddesses that dwell in caves and mountains. For mestizo farmers and population in urban centers, everything revolves around water scarcity and pollution. For Afro Mexican fishermen downstream, the crucial issue is the abundance of fish and the complex relationship between river runoff and ocean saltwater. Our story attempts to give a voice and a measure of dignity to these differing world views.

Encouraged by the polychrome dreamlike nature of the Ñuiñe land, Desiderio (58), a peasant from southern Mexico, offers the Tupa, the ancient spirit of the hills to which his grandparents used to ask for rain and harvest. At nightfall, while he rests at the foot of a campfire, that mysterious being guides him to the core of an ancestral memory.

The elder couple Erasmo and Esperanza continue to lead a traditional life style in rural Mexico. When one takes a living being for consumption, one has to ask for permission first. That is the way of the ancestors.

Past, present and future engage with each other in a conversation through a seashell found in childhood. A man recalls finding a seashell as a small boy, and remembers how the boy he once was, tried to imagine his future self.

A millennial tree that once birthed Yosonuviko, The village of the clouds, comes back into collective memory to the locals through the ancient language of rain, Sa'an Savi, to remind the of their feeble human condition among nature's immensity. Metaphor of life through time, that reminds us of the importance of coexistence with nature.

Ra Savi is the deity of the Ñuu Saavi Mixtec community, which translates as "the origin of the universe" from the town of San Andrés Huaxpaltepec, Oaxaca. The drought in the region forces the inhabitants year after year, guided by the Tatamandones, the old sages of the community, to make a pilgrimage to the cave of the Yucu Titti hill or the iguana hill, to carry out the ritual of the petition for the rain.
