Longest films ever made? Or best long films ever made?
200+ Minutes is the bar or over 3h20min. Perhaps arbitrary, yet meaningful.
Even Tarantino & Rodriguez double feature Grindhouse (2007) back to back films and previews only amount to a combined running time of 191 min. Spectacular Titanic (1997) came close at 194 min, and Doctor Zhivago (1965) and amazing About Dry Grass (2023) both at 197 min, but which film made you happy to sit through 200 minutes or much more of your life? (comments welcome below)
After extensive research and viewing, I have gathered here the Top 20 in order from best - 10 hours long Japanese masterpiece: The Human Condition in 3 parts (Part I is 208 min) - to excellent and extras. See below...
Important notes and additional info:
1. Recent Oscar-winner 8 hours, 5 parts documentary O.J.: Made in America (2016) at 467 min.
2. Pseudo-documentary director Peter Watkins has two powerful films on this list at 210 and 345 min (see below), but also made four hour and a half Fritänkaren (1994) at 276 min and one of the longest cinematic film Resan (1987) at 873 min.
3. Three of writer Ingmar Bergman's masterpiece mini-series also had theatrical releases including the best: Scenes from a Marriage (1974) which is only 169 min compared to 283 min original 6 parts 1973 series. Fanny and Alexander (1982) feature is 188 min while the original 4 parts total 312 min and is included below. The Best Intentions (1992) is a worthy autobiography directed by Bille August in 1991 in 4 parts total 333 min and also edited down. Mini-series or films, they are all amazing.
4. Filipino writer/director Lav Diaz 250 min superb Norte, the End of History (2013) is complemented by at least 10 other long films

5. Argentinian writer/director Mariano Llinás has two long films, starting with Historias extraordinarias (2008) at 245 min and La flor (2018) in 3 parts at over 13 hours (808 min)
6. 24-hour long UK films The Clock (2010) and 24 Hour Psycho (1993) each last 1440 minutes. I have not seen these and doubt when I can. I had a hard time convincing my brother seing a 12-hour long play called Utopie(s) from Hanna Abd El Nour.
7. For over 24 hours, The Longest Most Meaningless Movie in the World (70) is 48 hours, The Cure for Insomnia (1987) is 87 hours, Beijing 2003 (2004) is 140 hours and Modern Times Forever (2011) is 240 hours.
8. For over a month(!), Ambiancé was released Dec 31, 2020 and last 30 days or over 43 000 minutes. The longest film I could find is Logistics (2012) is 857 hours or 35 days, 17 hours, or 51 420 minutes!
