This is a beautifully made film, and it’s understandable how it can win an Oscar for Best Picture (although my vote would go to another nominee). You can see the editing and set detail and consistent tone of the film all throughout. It’s Guillermo del Toro style if you’ve seen all his other films. And it’s not just a simple straightforward story; it has a couple other (intriguingly, contemporary, that you’d think it was there to make a statement) subplots that work its way well into the movie. Some surprise at the end, which I had an idea when the story started. The script could have used a bit more context and that’s probably the only part this film fell short of. If you’re a film lover then by all means see it in the theater. If not, you can still enjoy this film later in the comfort of your big home tv. NOT a kids movie or sci-fi movie. This is a film for *adults*.

Votes: 201,512 | Gross: $46.87M
This is probably the first serious adult film I’ve seen in a year - something that’s not from a comics or sci-fi or just brash entertainment (Oh, how far have our critical minds slipped). Red Sparrow is an above average spy thriller with an above average script but it’s a JLaw movie and total proof that, man, JLaw is good at her craft, notwithstanding the goofy real life persona. The other cast are well represented, though not sure about the insertion of some comedic respite three-fourths of the way in. This is what we adults went to movies for, some decades ago - get some of those brain cells moving and to see some smart eye candy. The film could have been a little bit more; I guess we expect more after Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. However, JLaw delivers in spades in the somewhat stable directing of Francis Lawrence.
