Historic Film as defined by the film taking place in a historic time. Thus old films about contemporary events that are now historic (like Abel Gance's J'accusse about WW I) are excluded. Essayfilms and Documentaries are also included if they restage the events.
For the purpose of this list I define a historic time as an event or epoche that is longer than 30 years ago when the film was made (which means that a film like The Treasure of Sierra Madre for instance barely misses the mark while Lawrence of Arabia is included). If the story takes place over a longer timeframe, the starting point being longer than 30 years ago is the determining factor, though the film has to actively portray the historic progression in some way and it may not end in the future (like 2001). I made an exception for films like Madame de... & Liebelei because they do an exceptionally good job at portraying a historic society even though these times were only gone for less than 30 years. In essence what counts is if there had to be made an effort (in costumes, sets, etc.) to portray a another time.
