You race against 5 other cars around a race course. All the courses take place in the same location blocking off and opening up different sections for each race route. You start in class 1 and by finishing all races in the class in third place or better, you go up to class 2 etc. The aim is to complete all classes. There are 5 classes to get through giving you access to special classes which are the same as the first 5 classes except that you race the opposite way round each course, and there is a class 6 in special, completing this completes the game. As the player wins races they earn currency which can be used to purchase new cars and upgrades which become available. These are essential to being able to compete in later classes and start from scratch when special class 1 is started. One notable feature of the game is its customising, in which you can choose your race team name, design your team logo and choose the 2 colours painted on each of your cars.

A race car game where you can choose between 4 teams in story mode as you customize your race car. The player has to race against other cars for first place in order to qualify for the final Grand Prix.

As with other titles in the Ridge Racer series, this is arcade racing action, discarding reality in favor of fantasy thrills. There are 14 tracks and 18 cars. You can play a full 'Grand Prix' type season, or play individual tracks against the clock, an opponent or a ghost car. Lighting and reflection effects are built in to the game engine, as is the ability to modify your car's paint job and Replays can be viewed from any angle.

Racers compete in no-rules street races, dodging traffic and running through whatever gets in their way. A mysterious team led by a Japanese Hashiriya master, called "The Unbounded," plays a major role in the races throughout Shatter Bay.
