- DirectorMorten TyldumStarsJennifer LawrenceChris PrattMichael SheenA malfunction in a sleeping pod on a spacecraft traveling to a distant colony planet wakes one passenger 90 years early. The story of two young passengers on a 120 year suspended animated voyage who get woken up 30 years into their voyage.
By sheer quantity of viewings (21 and counting) this is my favourite science fiction movie. Derided by the critics but loved by her fans, this is a pretty much unique space film. No aliens, no evil corporations and no conspiracies, it explores the human condition of loneliness and the ethical dilemma facing a young man who finds himself with the prospect of dying of old age, alone in a ship full of sleeping people. Does he accept his fate or does he wake a companion?
The film is full of sparkling dialogue, bright sets and exciting set pieces. It also boasts the two most charismatic leads in Hollywood. A disaster movie with a incorporating sweet love story with a bite.
It has to be said that Jennifer Lawrence has never looked cuter than in this film.
The final selling point for this film is the haunting score penned by Thomas Newman. - DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJennifer LawrenceJoel EdgertonMatthias SchoenaertsPrima ballerina Dominika Egorova turns dangerous Sparrow.Jennifer Lawrence grows up in an enthralling spy movie that avoids all the usual clichéd tropes. No high octane car chases or implausible stunts. No green screen and definitely no unrealistic fight scenes. What you get is a brutal and sexy espionage thriller that leaves you gasping for more. Unlike the cartoon fights that Black Widow engages in, when Dominika gets hurt, she gets hurt. Ending up in hospital on at least two occasions. A brilliant film.
- DirectorDebra GranikStarsJennifer LawrenceJohn HawkesGarret DillahuntAn unflinching Ozark Mountain girl hacks through dangerous social terrain as she hunts down her drug-dealing father while trying to keep her family intact. The story of Ree Dolly, a young mountain girl and her quest to find her father, who has skipped bail before the family house he put up as security is repossessed, leaving her family homeless.
Jennifer's third full role and her first as a headliner. This film stands out because of the sheer quality of her performance. Jennifer was eighteen years old when the principle filming started on this amazing movie yet her screen presence is one of a veteran. Described by critics as not so much acting as a gathering storm, Jennifer Lawrence gives a performance that many twice her age would kill to have delivered. Many adjectives have been used to describe it but 'Phenomenal' barely covers it. This film cemented Jennifer's reputation as one of the best actors on the scene. - DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsBradley CooperJennifer LawrenceRobert De NiroAfter a stint in a mental institution, former teacher Pat Solitano moves back in with his parents and tries to reconcile with his ex-wife. Things get more challenging when Pat meets Tiffany, a mysterious girl with problems of her own.Pat Solitano, a teacher being treated for bi-polar is attempting to reconnect with his estranged wife Niki (who has a restraining order against him). Into his life comes Tiffany Maxwell a young widow who has gone off the rails and is trying to restore order to her life. She promises to deliver a letter from Pat to Niki in exchange for help in a little project she has going.
It is a measure of the amount of brilliant performances that Jennifer Lawrence has delivered that her Oscar winning film is placed at number four on my list.
At once funny, poignant and very moving this film is the one that finally placed Jennifer Lawrence at the top. Establishing her in my mind as the greatest female actor ever. - DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsJennifer LawrenceRobert De NiroBradley CooperJoy is the story of the title character, who rose to become founder and matriarch of a powerful family business dynasty. The story of 'Joy Mangano' and other inspiration woman.
The first film I watched with Jennifer in a 'non-super' role, that is, as a mere mortal. The film shouldn't work being as it is the story of a housewife who invents a Miracle Mop yet such is the talent of this phenomenal woman that the film is a tour-de-force.
Snubbed at the 2015 Oscars in favour of a lesser, mediocre film Jennifer nevertheless walked away with a well deserved Golden Globe. This film remains my favourite film. - DirectorBryan SingerStarsJames McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer LawrenceIn the 1980s, the X-Men must defeat an ancient all-powerful mutant, En Sabah Nur, who intends to thrive by bringing destruction to the world. The X Men, led by Charles 'Professor X' Xavier try to save the world from the first mutant En Sabar Nur (Apocalypse) a being with almost God-like powers.
Many have derided Jennifer Lawrence's performance as Mystique yet I find her to be far better in the role than the previous incumbent. Jennifer's 'Mystique' was sultry yet not overly sexual whilst her 'Raven' was 'sweet and naïve' , yet she also held a strength that led you to believe that she could take charge.
Certainly her role in this film was as catalyst; it is when her life is threatened and she is dying that Charles, Beast, Magneto and Storm band together to save her thus setting the scene for the final battle. Jennifer makes you believe in this scenario. - DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJennifer LawrenceJosh HutchersonLiam HemsworthKatniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark become targets of the Capitol after their victory in the 74th Hunger Games sparks a rebellion in the Districts of Panem. The second instalment of the Hunger Games Anthology, this is generally accepted to be the best of the four. As dystopian sagas goes, this is one of if not the best of the crop. Helped along by a strong storyline (the creepy Katniss/Peeta relationship notwithstanding) a superior cast and a phenomenal performance by Jennifer Lawrence makes this a standout. In fact it was this saga that catapulted the young actress from stardom to superstardom.
I don't normally like Y/A stories but this one was really good. Not only was the entire cast strong but the dialogue for the most part was sparkling. The soundtrack was also good although it was with Mockingjay PtI that James Newton Howard really hit the high spot. - DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJennifer LawrenceJosh HutchersonLiam HemsworthKatniss Everdeen is in District 13 after she shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta and a nation moved by her courage.
- DirectorFrancis LawrenceStarsJennifer LawrenceJosh HutchersonLiam HemsworthKatniss and a team of rebels from District 13 prepare for the final battle that will decide the fate of Panem.
- DirectorSusanne BierStarsBradley CooperJennifer LawrenceRhys IfansIn Depression-era North Carolina, the future of George Pemberton's timber empire becomes complicated when he marries Serena.Set in Depression-era North Carolina, Failing timber Baron George Pemburton woos and marries Serena Shaw for her money. Professing to love her he has a mistress on the side with a baby. Serena finds out and vows to put that to one side but when an accident at the logging camp causes her to lose her baby and deprives her of the opportunity of conceiving she turns murderous.
Playing the part of the wronged femme-fatale, Jennifer gives a more than convincing performance. Add to that the sweeping soundtrack and the amazing cinematography, this film never really got the recognition it deserved. - DirectorBryan SingerStarsPatrick StewartIan McKellenHugh JackmanThe X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.
- DirectorGary RossStarsJennifer LawrenceJosh HutchersonLiam HemsworthKatniss Everdeen voluntarily takes her younger sister's place in the Hunger Games: a televised competition in which two teenagers from each of the twelve Districts of Panem are chosen at random to fight to the death.
- DirectorMatthew VaughnStarsJames McAvoyMichael FassbenderJennifer LawrenceIn the 1960s, superpowered humans Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr work together to find others like them, but Erik's vengeful pursuit of an ambitious mutant who ruined his life causes a schism to divide them.Set in 1962, during the Cuban missile crisis, this tells the tale of a young telepathic mutant, Charles Xavier and his childhood friend Raven, a blue skinned shape shifting female and how he formed a club of young mutants to help integrate them into the world. Along with Erik Lehnsheer (who went on to become Magneto) Charles (Professor X) and Raven (Mystique) helped the young protégés to form a cohesive fighting group, The X Men.
This film was the first experience I had with Jennifer Lawrence and from the first time she appeared on the screen, I was captivated. Not only by her beauty but by her screen presence. - DirectorJodie FosterStarsMel GibsonJodie FosterAnton YelchinA troubled husband and executive adopts a beaver hand-puppet as his sole means of communication.
- DirectorMark TonderaiStarsJennifer LawrenceElisabeth ShueMax ThieriotAfter moving with her mother to a small town, a teenager finds that an accident happened in the house at the end of the street. Things get more complicated when she befriends a boy. A double murder is not an accident.
- DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsChristian BaleAmy AdamsBradley CooperA con man, Irving Rosenfeld, along with his seductive partner Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild F.B.I. Agent, Richie DiMaso, who pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and the Mafia.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsJennifer LawrenceJavier BardemEd HarrisA couple's relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence.I did not know just where to place this film as it is not a film I enjoyed. I didn't like it but Jennifer's performance in it is another level altogether. I will not describe the film, preferring to leave it up to the individual, but Jennifer deserves an Oscar merely for taking on this movie. As performances go it should be number one as I cannot imagine anyone else pulling it off. Jennifer reportedly injured herself badly on set, requiring oxygen and dislocating a rib, such was the intensity of her performance. Also, she had a 'safe place' set up for her to come down after each scene. I didn't think it was possible for her to get any better but her performance in this vile story is absolutely superb. The film will be regarded as a Masterpiece but don't expect it to be an easy watch.
- DirectorGuillermo ArriagaStarsCharlize TheronJohn CorbettJosé María YazpikA drama with a two-tiered storyline concerning a mother and daughter who try to form a bond after the young woman's difficult childhood.
- DirectorLori PettyStarsJennifer LawrenceJavon JohnsonSophi BairleyA dramatization of Lori Petty's teenage years spent in small town Iowa.Loosely based on the life of Lori Petty, the film focuses on one single day in the life of three abused and neglected sisters, Agnes (age 14) (Jennifer Lawrence), Bee (age 12) (Sophi Bairley), and Cammie (age 8) (Chloë Grace Moretz). Their mother, Sarah (Selma Blair), a woman who has turned to prostitution to support the girls, is forced into alcohol and drug abuse by her pimp, Duval (Bokeem Woodbine). Because of this, Sarah is unable to care for the girls, forcing Agnes into a position of being a mother to her two younger sisters. The three girls live in the mother's whorehouse, the Poker House, where neighborhood pimps and criminals gather to play poker, as well. Agnes believes Duval loves her, as a boyfriend would, despite his abuse towards her mother.
This film is uncomfortable in places as it features a scene where Agnes (Jennifer Lawrence) gets raped. Barely seventeen when the film was made, she nevertheless gives a solid convincing performance.
I can honestly say that although I have seen Jennifer in three or four poor films I have never seen her give a poor performance. In fact, her worst performance would be Oscar-worthy for most other actresses. - DirectorDrake DoremusStarsFelicity JonesAnton YelchinJennifer LawrenceA British college student falls for an American student, only to be separated from him when she's banned from the U.S. after overstaying her visa. This is probably the worst film Jen has appeared in where she had a large role. I understand the budget was a mere $250,000 (including air fair for cast and crew) which would explain the fact it was shot on a stills camera with a movie lens, had no script thus was totally ad-libbed and was shot from so far away that at times only one person was in shot. Yet even allowing for this the film is a total mess. Of all the cast only Jennifer Lawrence sounds convincing (she is, after all, a profoundly professional actor) and Felicity Jones is hopelessly miscast. Her irritating fake English accent grates on the nerves and one can only wonder at the reasoning behind the likeable Jacob (Anton Yelchin) leaving the sweet and sincere Sam (Jennifer Lawrence) for the abrasive Anna (Felicity Jones) in the most brutal fashion not once but twice! The moment when he betrays Sam for the second time and she leaves in tears is the only moment in the film that I felt any emotion.
A thoroughly unconvincing and unsatisfying film. - DirectorJason FreelandStarsErik SmithTierra AbbottVinessa ShawApril (age 15) is running from one bad situation into another, hoping to find an answer that doesn't involve nudity, and falls in with a group of confused kids chasing their dreams. The black widow in the web is the sexy, pot-dealing Sally.
- DirectorJames OakleyStarsRosamund PikeLena OlinDean WintersThe daughter of once famous actress is faced with her mother's dark past.I was warned not to watch this film by several sources but, as it is the first movie with a credited appearance by Jennifer Lawrence, I ignored them and gave it a go.
The exact date of the film is very vague with some reports putting it as far back as 2005 where others say it was 2006/7 but judging by Jennifer’s appearance I would hazard it to be closer to 2005.
Either way, it never got a cinematic release until 2013 (which should tell you a lot) and was most likely only released then to cash in on Jennifer’s rise in popularity and of course, her Oscar win.
To be fair, in the hands of another director, this might not have been too bad.
The Direction is horrible, the script laughable and the dialogue very bland. The chemistry between all the leads is practically non-existent and somewhere along the line Pike and Olin forgot how to act. To cap it all, some very drastic cutting left the running time at a little over 68 minutes. The result is a disjointed mess, very tediously plotted with little or no charm. Even the soundtrack is boring.
I can’t recommend this to anyone, not even die hard Jennifer Lawrence fans as her appearance is limited to a very brief appearance of her, lying on a bed, pouting seductively at her step-father. It really isn’t worth the bother.
