Died of injuries sustained in the suicide bombing attack on the Grand Hyatt Hotel. His daughter Rima also died in the attack, as did seven hotel employees and one suicide bomber. In coordinated attacks on two other hotels, the Radisson SAS and Days Inn, an additional 51 other people, plus two suicide bombers, were killed.

Bludgeoned to death with a log from the fireplace, by Giuseppe Perusi, a schoolteacher who had been living rough in the neighbourhood. Perusi killed himself afterwards, and his body was found in the Thames four days after the murder.

Shot to death by jihadist terrorists, brothers Saïd and Chérif Kouachi, during the attack on newspaper Charlie Hebdo. 11 other people were killed: Cartoonists Cabu, Philippe Honoré, Tignous and Georges Wolinski, newspaper columnists Elsa Cayat and Bernard Maris, police officers Franck Brinsolaro and Ahmed Merabet, copy editor Mustapha Ourrad, travel writer Michel Renaud and building maintenance worker Frédéric Boisseau. 11 other people were injured. The killers were shot and killed by police during a hostage situation a few days later.
