- DirectorRobert H. GardnerStarsMohammad Al-AsadSheila S. BlairJonathan M. BloomIn our post-9/11 world, a greater understanding across cultures is more important than ever before, yet the purpose of this program is not simply to provide political or historical context. Rather it is to explore and celebrate the great richness of Islamic art and architecture throughout the world to peer into extraordinary palaces and mosques, decorated with exquisite gardens, ceramics and paintings, to watch the play of light and space, and to sense the sheen of delicate textiles, of gold and silver work, and of rock crystal and precious gems.
- DirectorAbdul Latif SalazarStarsDariush ArjmandMitra HajjarGhorban NajafiExploring the life and impact of the greatest spiritual and legal philosopher in Islamic history, this film examines Ghazali's existential crisis of faith that arose from his rejection of religious dogmatism, and reveals profound parallels with our own times. Ghazali became known as the Proof of Islam and his path of love and spiritual excellence overcame the pitfalls of the organised religion of his day. His path was largely abandoned by early 20th century Muslim reformers for the more strident and less tolerant school of Ibn Taymiyya. Combining drama with documentary, this film argues that Ghazali's Islam is the antidote for today's terror.

The TV spotlight only shows his eloquent yet sarcastic answers he gives to the callers in a preset scenario, while in the dark and cloudy space around him, bloody struggles for power are raging, struggles he had always tried to avoid. But as Hatem continues his rise, the more he finds temptations and the less he has chances of salvation. Sheikh Hatem finds himself caught in a complex network of conflict, between the partial loss of a son being treated abroad and a wife whose love has grown cold, and security institutions trying to control him and-using his vulnerabilities-exploiting him to serve their interests. Meanwhile, a sovereign entity entangles him in solving a problem for the president, whose son causes the family an embarrassment of such a fragile society can't handle. "I cannot tell the entire truth, but I do my very best to speak nothing else." This is what Sheikh Hatem tries to do. - DirectorTimothy CopestakeStarsBettany HughesAntonio AlmagroMoussa AouniThis program contends that the popular perception of the Muslim occupation of Spain toward the end of the first millennium is largely wrong. The eighth century Muslim invasion of the Iberian Pennisula was largely welcomed by the locals and rejuvenated the area with advanced technology, agriculture and a construction boom. This program describes these innovations. All this changed in the eleventh century when the regional government fragmented. That set the stage for the Christian invasion and the Islamic fundamentalist resistance leading to more of a civil war than a holy war that decimated the region with corruption, destruction and exile.

Last year three million Muslims from over a 125 countries made the annual pilgrimage to Mecca. For fourteen hundred years the Hajj has provided a spiritual destination to millions of men and women around the world. ROADS TO MECCA follows the Muslim and non Muslim members of an international film crew as they attempt to make the first IMAX movie ever made on the Hajj. The film interweaves IMAX footage of the 14th century pilgrimage of the great Moroccan traveler Ibn Battuta, with the filmmakers' four year struggle to film in Saudi Arabia where cinema is banned, and in Mecca where entrance for non-Muslims is strictly forbidden. As Ibn Battuta joyfully reaches Mecca and performs the Hajj, the film portrays the personal journey of several Muslim filmmakers as they too experience the Hajj for the first time. The result is an unique portrait of one of history's most enduring rites. From the deserts of Morocco to the heart of the Islamic world, ROADS TO MECCA presents some of the most spectacular images ever documented of the Hajj and reveals the ultimate meaning of its sacred rituals.
- DirectorsJulia MeltzerLaura NixHouda al-Habash, a conservative Muslim preacher, founded a Qur'an school for girls in Damascus, Syria when she was just 17 years old. Every summer, her female students immerse themselves in a rigorous study of Islam, in addition to their secular schooling. A surprising cultural shift is underway-women are claiming space within the mosque, a place historically dominated by men. Challenging tradition, Houda insists education for women is a form of worship. Using Qur'anic teachings, she encourages her students to pursue higher education, jobs, and public lives, while remaining committed to an interpretation of Islam prioritizing women's role as wives and mothers. In a world rarely seen, The Light In Her Eyes tells the story of a leader who challenges the women of her community to live according to Islam, without giving up their dreams. Shot right before the uprising in Syria erupted, the film is an exclusive look at a social movement thriving in a country controlled by a repressive regime.
