A very good Cold War story.

Daniel Craig as Bond.
Another more 'serious' Bond movie but, from memory, more laughs than Craig's debut in the role (Casino Royale). Notable for the extensive back-story given to the primary villain of the piece, Raoul Silva (played by Oscar winner Javier Bardem). I probably got the most laughs when Raoul introduces himself to Bond...somehow I don't think that Daniel Craig was acting uncomfortable in that scene!
I'm guessing - based on the ending - that the next instalments in this franchise may be straight out remakes of early Bond movies, like "Dr. No" or "On her majesty's secret service". Neither a particularly good nor a particularly bad Bond movie. The fact that more of Bond's backstory is introduced as well as that of the main organisation working against him, makes this movie in a sense "important" to see. Actually a superior Bond story with realistic evil schemes...just spoiled, unfortunately, by incoherent and pretentious cinematography and editing.

Works as an imagined finale to the career of Bond.
Connery's Bond movies never acknowledged the existence of any other actor's stints as Bond...so, this movie is the ideal farewell for Connery's sequence of Bond movies.

Connery finds his feet as Bond in this movie...he would nail the character in his next outing ("Goldfinger").
The Bond formula starts to crystalise in this movie.
One issue that I do have with this movie though is that I saw it again about a month after I saw it for the first time...on second viewing I would have called it a 60% movie. Also saw "Goldfinger" again in a similar time-frame...but that only increased my appreciation of it.
Saw early Bond movies more than once in order to do my formulaic reviews of them here...stopped doing that once I watched the later Bond movies with Moore et. al. (as I had already seen those many years ago, some more than once, especially when rented). It's 'interesting' as far as the henchmen go, but...
Undoubtedly one of the silliest Bond movies in the franchise.
Connery is ill-served by some appalling scenes which render him as a sort of British Bugs Bunny (e.g. the scene where he board's Blofeld's oil rig).

Sean Connery as Bond.
On a first time view, this movie was around 7.5 to 8/10 movie for me. However, watching this movie again about a month later, it really suffered for the very slow pacing of the underwater scenes...it's like a Jacques Cousteau marine travelogue! These scenes just drag on and on and the fight scenes here are just plain confusing...it's hard to tell who the good guys are and who the bad guys are.
"For your eyes only" really is an object lesson in how to shoot underwater scenes which are thrilling and tension filled. That movie only had a few characters underwater...so, less was more in that case.
"Never say never" is in some ways a reboot of "Thunderball". Fortunately, the emphasis on extended underwater scenes is dropped in that latter movie.

Roger Moore as Bond.
Moore played Bond one too many times. By this stage he has lost all control of his facial expressions and comes across as a dirty old man in some scenes.
Principle villain is interesting and the principle henchperson becomes interesting...eventually. It's these two characters which bump up my score by 2.5%
Has some really cheesy, 1970s style US action/comedy scenes in it (like the fire-engine chase scene).
This might be the Bond movie where I actually fell asleep to it, when I rented it on VHS.

Sean Connery as Bond.
Connery's characterisation of Bond changed practically every following movie he made. This, his first attempt at playing Bond, introduces a character we would not recognise as Bond. Bond is rather dry here. He would warm up in the next movie, "From Russia with love" and positively boil in "Goldfinger", before hitting room temperature with the silly "Diamonds are forever".
Not a typical Bond movie...not that that is necessarily a bad thing...it's just that it didn't really work for me in this movie.
