Lenworth George Henry was born on August 29, 1958, in Dudley, West Midlands in England to a family of Jamaican immigrants. He made his TV debut on a talent show called "New Faces" in 1975 at the age of 16. He won and went on to things such as The Fosters (1976) and Tiswas (1974), which was when his career as a comedian took off. In 1989, Lenny Henry made the stand-up comedy movie Lenny Henry: Lenny Live and Unleashed (1989), which caught the eyes of the Walt Disney Company, which gave him the lead role in the American movie True Identity (1991) and a contract to do two other Disney films for about US$1 million. The movie flopped, bringing in less than US$5 million. The contract was canceled, and Lenny got half of what he would have if he had done the three films. Chris Tarrant is regarded by many as the king of popular broadcasting. With his popular breakfast show on Capital Radio and his regular peak-time appearances on ITV he's the biggest personality on UK commercial radio and has done wonders for the popularity of ITV's Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, which is now the world's most successful quiz show.
He was born on the 10th of October, 1946, and attended King's School, Worcester, from 1960 to 1964 where he showed a flair for hockey and cricket. Chris has described this period of his life as an unhappy one, owing to the very-strict nature of King's School, and in typical Tarrant style he described it as a 'modern day Iran'.
He later turned down a place at Oxford University, selecting instead to attend the University of Birmingham to read English. Following graduation, he worked for a while as an English teacher in Brockley, East London. His time as a teacher proved to be eventful, and for six months he had to live in a grey mini van in the grounds of the school after walking out on a girlfriend and having no place to stay.
When his teaching contract came to an end, he decided to pursue his dream of working in television. Tarrant took up work as a truck driver whilst writing a series insolent letters to television companies, claiming he was the face of the 1970s and they should grab the chance to hire him. Incredibly, his bold persistence paid off and he was invited by the Midlands-based ATV for an audition and ended up as a newsreader on the regional bulletins.
Chris reported on ATV's main daytime bulletins, which included light-hearted stories which helped raise his profile. In 1974, ATV wanted to develop a new show and it needed a host. They offered the job to Tarrant. He eagerly accepted and became the host of 'Tiswas', a Saturday morning children's show and his popularity soon soared.
In 1984, Tarrant joined Capital Radio as a presenter, initially presenting the station's lunchtime show, then from 1987 until 2004 he hosted Capital Breakfast. The show was immensely popular, increasing Capital Radio's audience share in London.
On 1 January 1993, when Thames Television dissolved and was replaced by Carlton Television, Tarrant hosted the first programme of the franchise, A Carlton New Year. Also in 1993, Tarrant hosted Lose A Million, in which contestants started off with a million pounds and were required to lose it by aiming to incorrectly answer a set of questions--a game-show that in some ways was a precursor to Who Wants to be a Millionaire. H
Tarrant is also the long-term host of Tarrant on TV, a programme which shows clips featuring a number of unusual television programmes from around the world. He has presented the show since 1990.
He began to host the popular television quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? in 1998, and since then the show has gone on to have series in over 100 other countries, and in 2002, the UK version merged with the Irish version.
In June 2008 it was announced he would return to radio, hosting a weekly Saturday morning show for the GMG Radio network of stations including London's 102.2 Smooth Radio, Real Radio (Scotland) and the North West's Century Radio.
Chris' charity work, for which he received an OBE in 2004 includes: being an ambassador for the homeless charity, Centrepoint; Trustee/Patron of The New School at West Heath for disadvantaged children (the school previously being a private school for girls that Diana, Princess of Wales attended); patron of Milly's Fund, set up in memory of murdered Surrey teenager "Milly" Dowler; patron of the Phoenix Centre for children with special needs. Jeremy Clarkson was born in 1960 in the Yorkshire town of Doncaster in the North of England, an area renowned for its loud shouting and rampant exaggeration. He went to Repton school but didn't really pay attention and then got a job with a local newspaper where he was famed for stories such as 'Literally 50 billion people visit cake sale'. Probably. Fern Britton began her TV career in the South West of England reading local news bulletins for both the BBC and Westward Television's nightly show "Westward Diary". During the mid 1980s, she read the national news on the BBC's Breakfast Time and occasionally presented on the sofa with Frank Bough. This was followed by a move to TVS to co-present the South edition of Coast to Coast with Fred Dinenage. Whilst at TVS Fern co-presented the networked "Airport 90" programmes with Nick Owen, and she teamed up with Fred Dineage again to present the last ever TV programme in the TVS region, "Goodbye to all That", on 31st December 1992.
From TVS, she switched to become entertainment corespondent for London Tonight instead, on the LWT and Carlton regions. This post was short-lived, for Fern shortly moved to GMTV, and then to BBC2 as host of the popular Ready Steady Cook made by Bazal Productions. Since September 1999, she has been presenting This Morning. While Richard and Judy were still in residence, she was the Friday guest host with John Leslie, but the pair became main presenters in 2001 following R+J's departure to Channel Four. Jamie Oliver's cheeky manner, constant use of the word 'pukka', and down to earth personality have won him legions of fans around the world. He has sold millions of cookery books, opened a restaurant, starred in several TV shows and revolutionised UK school dinners.
He was born May 27th, 1975 and brought up in Clavering, Essex, where his parents, Trevor and Sally, ran a pub called 'The Cricketers'. It was there that the young Jamie began to cut his teeth as a chef and would practice daily in the kitchen and by the time he was 11, the young protégé could cut vegetables as well as any of the kitchen staff. He later attended Newport Free Grammar School and left at age sixteen with two GCSE qualifications going on to attend Westminster Kingsway College, formerly Westminster College. He then earned a City & Guilds NVQ in home economics.
His first foray into the cheffing industry was as a pastry chef at Antonio Carluccio's Neal's Yard restaurant, where he first gained experience with preparing Italian cuisine, and developed a relationship with his 'mentor' Gennaro Contaldo. Oliver then moved to The River Café, Fulham, as a sous chef.
Also around this time he began attending the Westminster Catering College at the age of 16. Later, he worked in France, immersing himself in the culture and learning as much as he could before returning to London. His first job back was working for Antonio Carluccio as Head Pastry Chef at The Neal Street Restaurant.
Here Jamie worked alongside Gennaro Contaldo (of 'Two Greedy Italians' fame), who Jamie considers one of his mentors. After The Neal Street Restaurant, Jamie worked 3 1/2 years at the famous River Cafe in London, a position that would change his life forever. It was here, Jamie says, where he learned "all about the time and effort that goes into creating the freshest, most honest, totally delicious food." Not only that, it was also during his time at the River Cafe that he was noticed by the BBC in 1997 after making an unscripted appearance in a documentary about the restaurant, "Christmas at the River Cafe". That year, his show The Naked Chef debuted and his cookbook became a number one best-seller in the UK. That same year, Oliver was invited to prepare lunch for then Prime Minister Tony Blair at No. 10 Downing Street!
In July 2000, Oliver married former model Juliette Norton. The couple met in 1993 and have four children: Poppy Honey Rosie Oliver (born 18 March 2002), Daisy Boo Pamela Oliver (born on 10 April 2003), Petal Blossom Rainbow Oliver (born on 3 April 2009) and Buddy Bear Maurice Oliver (born on 15 September 2010).
In 2000, Oliver became the face of the UK supermarket chain Sainsbury's through an endorsement deal worth $2 million a year. After 11 years the partnership between Oliver & Sainsbury's ended. The final television advertisement was for Christmas 2011.
Oliver created Fifteen in 2002. Each year, fifteen young adults who have a disadvantaged background, criminal record or history of drug abuse, are trained in the restaurant business. Oliver conceived and established the Fifteen charity restaurant where he trained fifteen disadvantaged young people to work in the hospitality industry. Following the success of the original restaurant in London, more Fifteens have opened around the globe: Fifteen Amsterdam opened in December 2004, Fifteen Cornwall in Newquay opened in May 2006 and Fifteen Melbourne opened in September 2006 with Australian friend and fellow chef Tobie Puttock.
In 2005, he initiated a campaign called "Feed Me Better" in order to move British schoolchildren towards eating healthy foods and cutting out junk food. As a result, the British government also pledged to address the issue. Delving into politics to push for changes in nutrition resulted in people voting him as the "Most Inspiring Political Figure of 2005," according to a Channel 4 News annual viewer poll.
Oliver then began a formal campaign to ban unhealthy food in British schools and to get children eating nutritious food instead. Oliver's efforts to bring radical change to the school meals system, chronicled in the series Jamie's School Dinners, challenged the junk-food culture by showing schools they could serve healthy, cost-efficient meals that kids enjoyed eating.
