Ten of My Favorite Zombie Films!
Horror films add fun and inspiration to every Halloween season and lately zombie films capture a great interest from film goers. In this list I feature ten of my favorite films with zombies! Not germ infected wackos, but creatures that are walking dead humans that feed on the flesh of living humans. The kind of zombie for wich we can thank creator of Night of the Living Dead, George A. Romero. This is by no means a complete list and it could change, but these are my favorites among those I have seen at the time I write this list. If you like this list check out my film review blog at http://www.markplaid.com Thanks!

- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDavid EmgeKen ForeeScott H. ReinigerDuring an escalating zombie epidemic, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter and his TV executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.As much as I love Night of the Living Dead and appreciate its importance in zombie film history, I feel the original Dawn of the Dead truly defined the modern film zombie, especially for its over-the-top and MPAA unratable gore, which is key to the subgenre.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDuane JonesJudith O'DeaKarl HardmanA ragtag group of Pennsylvanians barricade themselves in an old farmhouse to remain safe from a horde of flesh-eating ghouls that are ravaging the Northeast of the United States.Despite the opinion of many a film geek, first doesn't always mean best. However, it was a difficult choice for me to put this film second, but it's a very close second. The original Night of the Living Dead took risks with violence, gore, and a bit of angry social commentary that made this film a classic beyond the zombie and horror genre. This film has the most tragic twist ending of any film I ever saw.
- DirectorDan O'BannonStarsClu GulagerJames KarenDon CalfaWhen two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies.George A. Romero collaborated with John A. Russo to create Night of the Living Dead, however, the zombies in Night of the Living Dead where more of how Romero envisioned them. Return of the Living Dead is more of a take on Russo's imagined zombies. The main differences of the zombies in this film talk and are almost impossible to destroy. The punk rock elements in the film and the soundtrack make it all the cooler.
- DirectorLucio FulciStarsTisa FarrowIan McCullochRichard JohnsonStrangers searching for a young woman's missing father arrive at a tropical island where a doctor desperately seeks the cause and cure of a recent epidemic of the undead.Dawn of the Dead hit it big in Italy and Lucio Fulci capitalized on calling this film Zombi 2, which implied it was a sequel to Dawn of the Dead, which was released in Italy as Zombi. Despite this crass publicity stunt, the film turned out pretty cool. You have to see it for the scene where a zombie fights a shark!
- DirectorTommy WirkolaStarsJeppe Beck LaursenCharlotte FrognerJenny SkavlanA ski vacation turns horrific for a group of medical students, as they find themselves confronted by an unimaginable menace: Nazi zombies.Among fellow zombie film fans, we seem to agree that one of the things we find appealing about zombie films is the fantasy of being able to run around shooting human-like beings with no remorse or repercussions. So what could be more fun than blowing away the living dead? The answer is blowing away living dead Nazis! I mean there isn't much remorse in shooting living Nazis as things are now. I don't know if there are any other Norwegian made zombie films but this one has got to be the best.
- DirectorsMarcel SarmientoGadi HarelStarsShiloh FernandezNoah SeganCandice KingTwo high school boys discover an imprisoned woman in an abandoned mental asylum who cannot die.I never thought a zombie film would be crossed with the obscure subgenre of rape/revenge, but then I saw Deadgirl. This has also got to be the only truly psychological horror zombie film. But don't worry, it doesn't lack violence and gore. Probably the most disturbing zombie film I've seen.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsTimothy BalmeDiana PeñalverElizabeth MoodyA young man's mother is bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey. She gets sick and dies, at which time she comes back to life, killing and eating dogs, nurses, friends, and neighbors. This is the first of four zombie comedies in my list, which may be a sub-subgenre at this point. The mixture of comedy just seems to work well for the zombie genre, maybe it's that over-the-top gore is darkly humorous or that the power fantasy elements that make the genre fun make the crossover to comedy easy. Either way, director Peter Jackson makes some very creative and very gut wrenching zombie antics in Dead Alive and should be seen by any self respecting zombie film fan.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsSimon PeggNick FrostKate AshfieldThe uneventful, aimless lives of a London electronics salesman and his layabout roommate are disrupted by the zombie apocalypse.Like most zombie comedy films, Shaun of the Dead isn't as much a parody or spoof of zombie films, but it can be best described as a serious zombie horror film with comedic overtones. How it succeeds in this is the believable gore effects and the genuine threat to the lives of likable characters. The comedic tension of dealing with serious zombies actually adds to the humor of it all.
- DirectorAndrew CurrieStarsKesun LoderBilly ConnollyCarrie-Anne MossIn a society where humanity has narrowly won a war against a zombie outbreak and technology allows for zombies to be used as working slaves, a young boy's close friendship with his family's household zombie becomes problematic.Fido is a zombie comedy that is goofier than Shaun of the Dead in it's setting and approach, but still deserves a place in my list for it's creative take on the zombie genre. The fall of society is a welcome trope in zombie film plots, but this provides a refreshing alternative. The new angle is also enhanced by some very clever and sharp comedy supported by genuinely identifiable characters.
- DirectorRuben FleischerStarsJesse EisenbergEmma StoneWoody HarrelsonA shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, a gun-toting bruiser in search of the last Twinkie and a pair of sisters striving to get to an amusement park join forces in a trek across a zombie-filled America.Zombieland is the most mainstream zombie film made and the top grossing zombie film released in the United States. Although some may scorn the film for its popularity, I enjoyed this film and thought it deserved it's fame. Although this film isn't exactly like its more cult film type brethren it stays true to many zombie conventions in ways unexpected for the mainstream origins this film has. A surprising but deserved entry into the genre.
